Ask @KimimiAvesta

Who's your favourite Fighting Game characters (from as many series as comes to mind)?

OK, I *know* I'm going to forget someone so you'll have to bear with me -
Makoto: Street Fighter III TS
Andy: Fatal Fury
Hibiki: Last Blade
Iori: KoF
Eileen: Virtua Fighter 5
Janet: Fighter's Megamix (bring this back, Sega!)
Viper II: Virtual On
Jun: Tekken 2
Taki: Soul Edge/Blade
Ukyo: Samurai Shodown
Is that enough for now? :S

Is there any arcade systems/hardware you particularly favour?

From a practical point of view I'm a big fan of the cart-based systems (PGM, MVS, etc) just because they're pretty robust and don't require any particular maintenance to keep working. When I'm window shopping though I always spend a long time drooling over basically anything that comes on a giant naked PCB just because they look amazing :D
Just considering the games the only thing I try to do is avoid buying too many MVS titles - it's a wonderful machine and deserves the love it receives, but there's a whole wide world (of arcades games) out there, y'know?

Hi, @Rildiz here again. Outside of the Phantasy Star games and Sega classics which games are a must, in your opinion, on the Mega Drive?

Depends what you're in the mood for, really. I suppose I'd want to make sure everyone gives Alisia Dragoon, Kujaku Ou 2 (Westernised as Mystic Defender), and Rocket Knight Adventures a go - those are all exclusive, available worldwide, and unless something's changed recently pretty affordable.
If I could make people sit down and play anything without having to worry if they could afford it or understand it, I'd pick Surging Aura, Alien Soldier and Magical Hat no Buttobi Turbo! Daibouken (Westernised as Decap Attack).
Oh, and Chiki Chiki Boys too, that's a fantastic game :D

Can you recommend any otome games that are out in English (with a decent translation)? The recent remake of Hatoful Boyfriend has me curious to play something that's a straight entry in the genre instead of a parody.

I pay next to no attention to English language releases so I'm absolutely the last person to ask about this sort of thing, sorry :3

Hi, @Rildiz here again. Just wondering when you'll grace another podcast :)

That depends on if/when someone's kind (or crazy) enough to ask!
I did really enjoy doing that podcast with Anne, and I'm very grateful for all the kindness her listeners have shown me considering that not only was it my first time but we also tackled a pretty sensitive subject too, it was really encouraging - thank you everyone! :D

When did you start learning Japanese? How long did it take you to become proficient enough to enjoy video games? Bonus Q: been to Japan?

I started a long, *long* time ago, using travel phrasebooks borrowed from the library (hey, it was the 90's!) with incomplete hiragana tables to try and decipher Japanese game manuals and a random Dragonball Z manga I'd managed to get my hands on. So, not the best start! That's really all there was though, which sounds ridiculous in an age where my always-online *phone* has access to multiple Japanese dictionaries and native Japanese keyboard support.
Anyway! As for games - it kinda depends on what you want to play and what you want to get out of it. I'm terrible at studying (and remembering things, and...) so my main aim when I play a game in Japanese is to have a good time and to come out knowing a little more than I did when I started; which I figure is a more "natural" way of learning than GOTTA UNDERSTAND EVERYTHING ALL THE TIME. As such I'd still consider the likes of say... Gyakuten Saiban beyond me because they require you to notice fine detail, whereas there have been other adventure games that I have been able to appreciate with a bit of patience and a dictionary to hand. Err... that's probably not a great answer, but it's kinda one of those "How long's a piece of string" questions, sorry :3
TL;DR - I'm a slow and inconsistent student, with a side order of stupid for good measure! But there's no rush and I'm having fun, so it doesn't matter too much, right?
Bonus Q answer: I have never been to Japan. Now that I think about it I've never even been to a Japanese restaurant! XD

You're p. awesome, how do you do dis?

I honestly have no idea; I just keep yakking on about the things I love and people seem to like it so I guess everything's groovy? :)

Do you consider that Phantasy Star IV can compete with the upper echelons of SNES RPGs or is it simply the best in the limited Mega Drive market?

I genuinely feel it's a top-tier 16-bit RPG, not just "good for the MD": of course Squaresoft were on fire then and there's no way I'd want to pretend that Phantasy Star IV looks as good as Bahamut Lagoon but the cutscenes were great and frequent (and of course I think the gameplay's up to scratch too).
Looking at their respective libraries overall the SNES has the quality *and* the quantity that the MD just can't match, but I feel the MD selection is done something of a disservice by the lack of attention/fan translations of Falcom's games, Surging Aura, a heap of Japan-only Mega CD RPGs and so on.

Mega drive or snes sound chip?

I suppose I'd split that pretty much the way I do Mega Drive and SNES games - the MD's sound generally suits action games better, while the SNES sound tends to work well with RPGs. Glorious exceptions on either side of course (Phantasy Star IV and Super Metroid to pick just two "opposites") but that's how I see it.

What game has your favorite overworld/world map?

Umm... I'm a big fan of Squaresoft's showy mode-7 SNES maps - especially the Seiken Densetsu 2/3 ones. Other than that, anything that has something interesting-looking that you can't enter or a path that's blocked but looks like it should go somewhere cool - Shining Force 2 is one of the worst offenders for me in that regard :)

Do you deliberately avoid 'mainstream' games? American/English games?

My level 21 Awoken Warlock says no ;)
Less pithy answer - I have a finite amount of time and money but apparently an endless enthusiasm for video games - something's gotta give. Assuming I'm not after a "trophy" title (Rendering Ranger, etc.) I can pick up a small *pile* of Japanese retro games for the same price as a new domestic release, and it's unlikely that my £30's worth of Jp Saturn arcade games (or whatever) is going to have a £8.50 resale value a week later.
Having said that some of my most recent purchases include Destiny (as mentioned above), Diablo III RoS (play it co-op with my husband), and preorders for The Evil Within and the fancy-pants edition of REmake HD; so I do try to keep an eye on regular new games as well as hunting down all the weirdy stuff I inflict on everyone :)

Standard question: Top 3 games per generation? :) Best Regards @Rildiz

Ooh, I've never really thought about it - let's see what comes up -
(Standard disclaimers: not in order, definitely forgot something, etc. etc.)
Pre-MD/SNES (which in my case means Amiga) -
Dungeon Master
Alien Breed
Rod Land
16-bit - let's pick one per format
Phantasy Star IV (MD)
Super Metroid (SNES)
Super Star Soldier (PCE)
32-bit
NiGHTS (Saturn)
Soul Edge (PS1)
Panzer Dragoon Saga (Saturn)
N64/DC
Phantasy Star Online (DC)
Sin & Punishment (N64)
Samba de Amigo (DC)
PS2/GC/Xbox
Final Fantasy XII (PS2)
REmake (GC)
Panzer Dragoon Orta (Xbox)
PS3/360/Wii
Mushihimesama Futari (360)
Boku no Natsuyasumi 3 (PS3)
Final Fantasy Fables: Chocobos Dungeon (Wii)
This list is of course missing handhelds/arcade/beautiful misc. hardware like the Mega CD as well as any computer that's not the Amiga and it's killing me because that's where a lot of my favourite games are, but I don't want to be here all day, so this is at least a little window into my non-taste :)
