how is power to your rack equipment hooked up? Do you have a power conditioner or something like a furman running to everything?

I have multiple monster 3500 power conditioners.

What's your kick and snare chain with the gear you use, then?

Kick: Currently using a Melcor EQ 20(I've used many other hardware EQ's in the past), sometimes compression with the 1909 or Distressor. Sometimes no compression. Just automation.
Snare: Vintech X73i and/or UTA EQ(I used to use an API 5500 on snare a lot). 1176 or Distressor for compression.
I have Distressors and Level-Ors on my parallel drum busses as well.

Mix-wise how do you treat the sub bass area to bring out character and feel?

I try not to mess with it to much and keep it lively. I find the less processing done on sub frequencies the bigger they sound in the end. The key is to have all the instruments in the mix sitting so that they don't take away from the natural low end in the bass and drums. As apposed to trying to hype the low end with gimmicky plug-ins.

Your mix/mastering job for the new I the Mighty record was so crazy loud, RMS wise and perceived loudness wise. How'd you manage to accomplish that?

It's just how the mix turned out. It wasn't a goal of ours. We actually brought the volume down at the last minute. The working mix/masters were even louder.

What is your favorite tuning for snares? Dry or ringy? If ringy - how high pitched?

I prefer less ringy snares. But not too dead.

I know you're a big dw fan but what are some of your other favorite kits to track?

Gretsch USA customs are truly my favorite modern kicks. I love DW, Tama and Gretsch's high end kits in general. But for snares I prefer the Tama Bell Brass, Monarch or Starclassic Maple as well as the Ludwig Black Beauty. For vintage sounding drums I love my 50's WFL kit, for single kick rock/indie it stands up to any modern drum set.

Do you prefer the physical engineering side or the producing side the most?

I enjoy both equally. It's good to have balance. The creative side of production keeps me inspired and the science of engineering keeps me grounded.

First of all thank you for spending time to answer our questions, it's very much appreciated. What is most important when trying to achieve clean and tight low end(sub bass, subby kicks, ). What would be on your chain and why?

The most important thing for me is to make sure the length that my kick drum sustains is correct for the song. Too short and it will sound small, too long and your whole mix will be muddy in the low frequencies. This can be controlled by tuning and dampening the bass drum to fit your needs. If you're blending in a kick drum sample make sure it doesn't sustain for too long. If your mixing something that someone else tracked you can use automation to control the length. Get this and your EQ right and the low end in your mix will sound huge and clear.

Why did you make the switch from the barefoots to the amphions? How are you liking the amphions?

It was time for a change. I love the Amphions. They're very clear and less fatiguing.

When I track instruments like acoustic guitar I like to use headphones while position the mics, but I often find my headphones decieve me into thinking it sounds good when it doesn't. Is there a pair of headphones you would reccomend to do this?

I prefer isolation headphones for stuff like that. Otherwise I hear too much guitar in the room and I can't really tell what the source sounds like. ISO phones are usually rolled off in the high end. So you'll want to keep that in mind when moving the mic around and still double check on your monitors. The best thing to do is have a second person move the mic in the tracking room while you sit in the control room hearing only the mic through the monitors.

It's Friendship Day! How do you cheer your best friend up when they're sad?

Pizza. Why do you ask? Is there another way?

How do you typically mic a bass cab? If it has a horn do you mic that as well? Also do you have a favorite bass head and cab?

I prefer micing cabs that don't have horns. And if it does I won't mic it. My favorite heads are the Soursound 150w bass amp and original 80's Ampeg SVTII. My favorite cabs are Ampeg 8x10's.

When you are setting up your control rooms, do you do any measurements to decide listening position or where to apply treatment?

I try to make my listening positing as close to 37% as possible. I don't like my monitors super wide. A 4ft triangle equilateral is where I usually end up.

Hey, I was wondering what you used for reverb/delay on Jonny's vocals on the Slaves record. The really spaced out parts sound absolutely rad.

Most of the vocal reverbs and delays on my mix of that record are an Eventide H8000FW.

How do you handle drum room mics while recording and mixing? What mics do you use and how? Also how do you process them in the mix? And how loud do you put them acording to the rest of the drum tracks? Thanks man I know there's a lot of questions... Loving the ITM's Connector Mix!

For more in depth answers check out my Creative Live class on drum tracking. I usually mix drum rooms equal or slightly louder than the overheads. I rarely do any EQ, compression or any other processing to room mics.

How do you like to record/mix acoustic guitars? What does your chain on those look like? I hear a lot of different things, you seem to get a fullness and warmth without the thin tinny stuff.

Recording acoustic varies quite a bit on the song and the other instruments around the acoustic guitar in the song. But good tones start with a cool sounding acoustic and good mics. I generally start with my close mic where the body meets the neck about 12" off the guitar slightly angled toward the sound hole. Then I listen in headphones to find the sound I want. Some of the mics I've used and enjoyed over the years for acoustic are the Soundelux U99, Neumann KM184, Neumann KM84, Flea 49 Next and Gefell M930.

I spy the Warm 76 in your rack, how do you like it compared to the other 1176s you've had in the past?

Lawrence Ames
It's functional. It's not incredible, but it gets the job done on certain things. It really doesn't sound like an 1176, so comparing it to one isn't fair. As far as 1176 clones go, I've never been happy with any of them. I do sort of miss my Mohog, but I truely just need to pony up and get a real UREI Rev D.

What's your opinion on summing mixers? Looking at the dangerous 2bus atm and would be good to have your thoughts on whether they are worth the cash. Thanks :)

I feel like there are a lot better places to put your money. I would find one you can demo and see if it sounds like it's worth it to you. I haven't used one since Feb 2009.

How does a preamp connect to a PC/MAC? What does your chain look like? Do you use an audio interface?

This is what some of my chain looks like. Mic -> Mic Pre -> EQ -> Compressor -> AD Converter -> Mac. The Prism ADA-XR conversation the analog signal to digital and sends it to my Mac. I don't use an interface because all in one units like that are geared toward home recording and demoing.
