The 9th region will be strong again this year. Does Highlands have enough to repeat?

Highalnds lost a lot of offense from their State runner up team. That being said, there is a lot of talent in the pipeline and they return two top arms in Raisor and Doty. Add sophomore LHP Rom on the bump. No question Highlands will compete for a 9th Region championship.

Preseason picks for the state championship game?

That's a tough question because so much is dependent on the draw of the bracket. If I look at who we will rank No.1 and 2 in our Preseason poll...Ballard and Lexington Catholic. That's not set in stone though for the preseason rankings...

How often do you update the rankings online?

Player rankings get updated 4 times a year.
Team rankings get updated once a week during the high school season.

How good will Lexington Catholic be this year?

Very good. They will have one of the deepest pitching staffs in the state this year and an offense led by Bush (Kent State commit), Moberly, Madry, and Grigalis.

What are your thoughts on the 16th region this year?

Really like the Greenup County team who returns pretty much their entire roster. I will say though that they had a very favorable draw in that region last year with West Carter and Rowan County on the other side of the bracket. No one wants to face Cameron Planck or Ben Jordan in the first round.

With a lot of players committing as underclassman, do you believe it is it their performance on their high school team that a college coach looks for or is it mainly based on 5 tools and showing their skills in showcases?

Great question! Coaches do get out to high school games some in the spring but obviously their ability to do so is limited because they are in the middle of their own season. If you are referring to high school stats as far as a player's performance, they are relatively meaningless in getting recruited. Our showcases give players the opportunity to have their measurables recorded by a trusted source for college coaches. The major player for the acceleration of the recruiting process is the information being put out there on players. PBR has been and continues to be a big part of that with the information we put out on players via our website and social media.

What teams could potentially get past South Warren in the 4th region?

Look for a very good Bowling Green team to give South Warren all they want in the 4th Region. Same as last year. Beware in that region if you draw Franklin-Simpson in the first round. Seth Johnson is as good as anyone in the region on the mound.

In your opinion what is best for a player...to play as many positions as possible while in high school, or perfect one position?

I don't think you need to narrow it down to one position necessarily in high school. Versatility is a good thing. Being able to play a few positions well may give you a chance to get on the field earlier in your college career. The key words there are "being able to play a few positions WELL." That being said, the position(s) players play in high school directly relate to where the team needs them the most. Players play positions all the time at the high school level that they will never play at the college level.

Why are pitchers ranked higher than position players when the position players are usually far more athletic and usually put up better numbers?

Pitching wins at every level of baseball. It will always be a high priority position with a premium placed on the position in recruiting, along with true SS's and CF's. It's the way baseball teams are built.

How does Sayre look this year? Do they have a chance at Regionals again?

Sayre absolutely has a chance to make the 11th region tourney again. They have two arms in Elias and DuPree who can beat anyone on any given day. They will be well coached and should be dangerous come tournament time.

Best pitchers in the 11th region?

It's a region always loaded with pitching. Those that immediately come to mind include the following:
Lexington Catholic - Coleman & Lockhart
Sayre - Elias & DuPree
Scott Co - Redmon
Lafayette - Satisky
Madison Central - Holbrook
PLD - Shepherd
LCA - Miley
This list is a good place to start. There are some young arms who also have a chance to emerge in this region, but it's typically a region dominated by juniors and seniors on the mound.

Region 8 thoughts? Any big time standouts?

South Oldham has talent all over the field led by a pair of juniors in Kentucky commit Tanner Johnson and Murray State commit Will Moriarty. Bellarmine commit Michael Higgins and Moriarty should anchor the pitching staff, and watch out for sophomore RHP Brennan LaBarbera who was very impressive at Saturday's Preseason All-State Showcase. On paper South Oldham has the most talented team, but both North Oldham and Collins have some nice pieces and will certainly challenge in the region.

Are there any academic requirements for a JUCO?

Yes, you must be a high school graduate or have a GED. If you're a non-high school graduate, you can establish eligibility by completing 12 credit hours at the junior college with at least a 1.75 GPA.

whos getting the most recruiting from 11th region in 2017 class?

RHP Trip Lockhart (Lexington Catholic), SS Thomas Bennett (Western HIlls), and RHP Eddie Satisky (Lafayette) would head that list.

How long is too long to hold out on a high level D1 scholarship as a 2016 senior?

That's a tough question to answer without knowing the specific player's abilities, but the way recruiting has gone the last few years, if you aren't getting significant Division I interest by now, chances are it likely isn't going to happen for you. There are always exceptions to this, and there always seem to be a handful of players who commit late to Division I schools, but speaking in general terms, if you aren't receiving significant D1 interest by now, you should begin looking at other options if you have yet to do so.

What's your opinion on JUCO?

The JUCO route can be a very good financial option for families given that they are typically less expensive and have a significant amount of athletic scholarship money to offer. Division I JUCO's have 24 full scholarships if they are a fully funded program while Division II JUCO's have 24 full tuition scholarships. Again, those numbers apply only if the program is fully funded by the school. There can defintiely be advantages in going the JUCO route in terms of the possibility of getting playing time early and continuing to develop as a player. PBR Tennessee ran a very informative article with Walters State Recruiting Coordinator Dan Skirka awhile back about junior college baseball >> http://www.prepbaseballreport.com/news/TN/Walters-State-Recruiting-Coordinator-Dan-Skirka-Talks-Juco-Baseball-1896524073

Is it a bad thing to go to a D3 school over a D1 or D2?

Certainly not if it's the best fit for you! Each kid has to make the decision on what is the best fit for them, both academically and athletically. Some of the finest academic institutions are Division 3 schools, and there is some solid baseball played at that level as well.

From a velocity standpoint what are Division I coaches looking for in a high school pitcher?

There are a lot of factors at play here and it's hard to just lump all pitchers and all Division I schools together for this question. A very rough guide would be a minimum of mid-80's for a RHP and low 80's for a LHP depending on the age of the player. A college coach has to consider whether he thinks a pitcher projects for more velocity when he gets to the college level as well. In other words, a 6-foot-3, 170 pound RHP whose arm works cleanly but currently tops at 85 mph as a junior has a much higher likelihood of picking up additional velocity than a 5-foot-11, 200 pound pitcher with the same velocity from a projectability standpoint. Given that their are far fewer left-handed pitchers than right-handers, I've seen low-80's velocity guys sign with Division I schools, but you better be able to spin the curveball and at least project as a guy who can come out of the bullpen and be effective in lefty/lefty matchups.

It seems like recruiting keeps happening earlier in baseball. What are your thoughts about it and do you think we will start to see more kids de-committing because of it?

I get asked this question a lot. It's amazing how the recruiting process in baseball has sped up in just the last few years. Three years ago, 90 percent of recruiting took place the summer after a player's junior year. Now, we have freshman committing before they have ever played a varsity baseball game. If you look at the PBR database which includes our 27-state coverage area, there are 6 class of 2019 and 78 class of 2018 players currently committed. Obviously, these kids are some of the better players in their respective classes currently. Most coaches I have talked to about it don't like it but view it as a necessity if they don't want to lose out on a player they think can make a significant contribution to their program. I think the result of this will be more de-commitments than we have seen in the past from baseball as some players don't develop like it was thought they would. The other part of that equation is some of the scholarship offers to freshman and sophomores are predicated on them reaching certain academic requirements (GPA and ACT score) and if the player doesn't, you may see a de-commitment for that reason. We are just now starting to get into classes that began the very early recruiting in baseball so it will be interesting to see how some of it plays out.

What's the 10th region look like this year? Who are some of the top players in the region?

Bourbon County returns Kaven Brown, the top pitcher in the region. They were upset in the region tourney last year as Scott got hot at the right time. I would say Bourbon has to be considered the favorite going into the season.

How good is North Oldham? Can they beat St. X?

North Oldham will be good. St. X will be good. Baseball is always about pitching matchups.

How do you get invited to the preseason showcase?

Invites will go out very soon. We should have the showcase posted on the website tomorrow. There will be a link players can click on to request an invite as well.
