Hello! I love your work, very inspiring. How do you get your linework so clean yet fluid? Is it part of your cleanup process or have all your years of drawing leveled you up to getting it 'done in one'? Thank you! Your work is appreciated by many.

r
I actually don't have a clean-up process! I usually go straight from a thumbnail sketch to lineart. I find that my work looks better when it's as loose as possible. As for line quality, that's definitely something I've practiced for many, many years. If you want to get a good clean line, I recommend studying French & Belgian comics (bandes desinees); they often are characterized by a ligne claire style, or literally "clean line." Practice doing smooth, long, single strokes instead of many small short ones. Another thing that really helped me achieve confident, clean lines was just drawing straight with pen or ink in my sketchbook without a pencil underdrawing. Hope that helps!

Hello, I was wondering how you got the job working on the LOK comics? I know you've worked on various other series before LOK, but did you have to apply to be the artist or did the employers find your site after becoming known from previous projects? Looking forward to reading the full lok comic!

Hi Irene! I'm a big fan of your artwork. I saw in another ask that you said you burnt out last year while doing art. How did you manage to pull yourself out? I'm currently a burnt out artist, and not making art like I used to is killing me, but I'm at a loss for what to do next.

Hi! Thanks so much. Are you burnt out, or feeling uninspired? Because my burning out left me not wanting to make any art at all for a while. If it's a burn out, just ride it out. Enjoy other things, take time off of art. Soon, your hands will be itching to get back. If it's a lack of inspiration, though, fuck that shit — work through it, keep making stuff, even if it's smaller in scale. Change up the medium, the location, the content, even. Art is my profession, so I don't have the luxury of wallowing in art block anymore; I have no choice but to make my living. Just keep hustling, and it'll pass, just like everything else. Either way, both are temporary feelings, I promise.

Hi! I'm Hispanic, so seeing that would be super cool, but I didn't know they were included in this particular world? Im def not complaining lol, but I'm just a little confused about that now?

Who cares? The more representation the better. It's certainly not being made up for in other spaces, so I'm using Republic City for it when I can. And if we're talking about historical parallels with Asia, everyone traveled there for various reasons. It's not like it was just white people.

Do you have to ask about the sneak peaks that you bless us with, or how does that work? Thanks!

There are certain reveals that I check in with my editor first, like release dates, con appearances, cover reveals, etc. But for process drawings, it's generally accepted as long as I'm not spoiling anything.

whho is your fav artist?

erika
For illustrators: Natsume Ono, Nicolas Nemiri, Daisuke Igarashi, Warwick Cadwell Johnson, the Last Man team, Takehiko Inoue, CLAMP, Naoko Takeuchi, Rumiko Takahashi..... the list goes on and on.

Do you think you could add some hispanics to the comics? Such as Cubans, Puerto Rican's and etc? Or would that not be possible? I would love to see my Hispanic heritage come to life in your art :)

Of course! Will do.

are there any other POC in the Korra comics? you mentioned a south asian woman at your ECCC panel but are there more?

Yeah, I've added black folk to the Republic City populace bc why the fuck wouldn't there be, haha. I try to diversify the crowds where I can, especially with South Asians, who are underrepresented in... all media. Indian folk, Malaysian and Indonesian hijabi, Filipinos, Bangladeshis. If there's anything y'all want to see, just tell me. I always need inspiration for huge crowd scenes.

Hi!! In that comic post where you captioned 'merry christmas, here's jinora taking names' the dude in the glasses that she's destroying wouldn't happen to be your boyfriend, would it? Anyways, I also just wanna say thanks for all you're doing and your hair?? And cat!! Both so, so stunning.

Yep, that's him. I totally forgot until my colorist pointed it out, but I also snuck Sasuke, Naruto, and Sailormoon into a crowd scene, haha. And thank you thank you~

what brand of contacts do you use? are they grey?

I forget the brand but I got them from Pinky Paradise, and yeah, they're grey

I was wondering if the prints you're selling at ECCC will be available online/for international purchase?

I'll see what I have left after ECCC, but I didn't print that many so it may be unlikely. But I'll be sure to be loud on twitter about it if I do have leftover stock!

OK so I sent a whole paragraph to you on Tumblr an I'm realizing how much easier this is lol? In case u missed it- my question was if you could tell us if there will be any Kainora at all since they got like zero shine in the last season !!!

I have stated/requested several times on Tumblr and through my FAQ linked on my page to not ask me about pairings, plot points, etc. It is supremely annoying. Cheers.

Why are asian people so hard to draw? :(

Because, if you live outside of Asia, media & entertainment tend to neglect us, and so you see us less, understand less, etc. Also, because you are racist.

I'm a game dev and I occasionally need to commission artists. Any protips from the artist perspective on how I can optimize/not-fuck-up that relationship?

I D
Money talk upfront, and then pay them on time. Contracts are always a good idea. All else is answered the same way for how you'd work with any other kind of collaborator (clear communication, courtesy, professionalism).

Did you watch Ronda Rousey fight? What did you think?

Yes. I think it's unfortunate that her camp didn't prepare her properly, and I also think she was a tremendously positive force for women's MMA.

why would you hate being the avatar?

Because chilling out, smoking weed, playing video games, and being an attentive partner & cat-mom is a way nicer life than having the responsibilities of the Avatar on my shoulders.

how many hours do you draw a day?

erika
I work for 4-5 hours a day if I'm not in crunch mode, plus an extra hour or two for personal art. I burnt out last year, so I'm trying to not overwork myself anymore.

if you were a bender, what type of bender would you be? or would you rather be the avatar? hahaha

I would be a firebender, but water is by far the best. I would fucking hate to be the Avatar lol.
