Have you watched any of the ABC Muppets show?

wayne_o1’s Profile PhotoWayne Norris
Yeah. I actually really enjoy it. It makes me laugh more often than not. I'm not sure how long it'll be on the air, but there's some genuinely funny stuff in there, and they're trying really hard to make sure everyone stays in-character, in spite of all the complaining that the show is too edgy.

Ever watched No Country for Old Men? What did you think of it?

It's a good movie but it is forever tainted in my mind for stealing There Will Be Blood's best picture Oscar.
Also not my favorite recent Coen. As time has gone on I've come to really love Inside Llewyn Davis.

How goes the reviewer hiring?

There are like 20 questions about this in my inbox, so here's an update.
We haven't hired anyone yet and are no longer accepting applications. The position we were hiring for was not an urgent one (it's a very limited freelance role - not a staff critic position) and so it wound up getting pushed back as there was no immediate need for it. We've looked through the applications submitted and have some candidates in mind, but haven't contacted anyone just yet.
That's it. Please email zac@animenewsnetwork.com if you have questions about this - ask.fm is not the place for it. Thanks.

What's the most recent anime that you believe will be considered a classic in the future?

Invaders of the Rokujyouma?! will surely be held in the highest esteem by generations to come
Seriously though, Madoka is still the most recent show that I think will be considered a "classic" by fans 20 years from now. We'll hopefully get a few more between now and then. Personally I think Space Dandy will be held up as a particularly bright and shining moment, at least by animation nerds, for a long time to come.

So did the Rick worship Season 2 has kind of gotten into not bother you? I was reading what Hope was saying about it last night on twitter, and I see what she's talking about and even agree, But for some reason it doesn't really bug me? If it was any other show it probably would, so it's weird.

You and I feel exactly the same way. I agree with Hope's criticisms of the show - they just don't bother me. There is something about the tone and the writing on that show, along with the weird aesthetic of it, that just 100% clicks with me.

What did you think of Rick & Morty season 2?

Absolutely loved it. Particularly the episode with Unity, which might be my favorite episode of the show after the first interdimensional cable episode. I liked the finale a lot, too - I'm not sure about the exact production schedule but the show is such a hit and the network supports the show so much that I'm sure they knew full well they'd get at least a third season, hence the cliffhanger. I dug it. My favorite thing on TV by a wide margin.
I want a movie. I think the show's writing style would be a perfect fit and I think Harmon and Roiland would really relish it and make it something special. All in due time...

Would you feel it would be acceptable for a Funimation english dub to add in a joke about "SJWs"?

No, for the same reason I complained about the Gamergate reference. Of-the-moment internet slang, memes and references almost never actually serve the purpose of localization; it's "look at this internet reference I snuck in here!" on behalf of whoever wrote the adapted English script.
Here I went on and on about this on twitter on Friday just read those https://twitter.com/ANNZac/status/647083050002550784

Is there any possibility that someone living outside of the US might be hired as a writer for ANN?

Yep! Just not for reviews, unless they're in a country with legal streaming access to everything we need. Physical releases are out because of the shipping cost. But for editorials? Absolutely we'd hire people from outside the US.

Are you still accepting applications for new ANN reviewers?

No - but we haven't hired anyone yet either. Likely we'll start sending out emails next week to candidates we want to seriously consider.

Do you have any plans to have Steven Foster on the ANNCast?

I've asked him several times, he has not expressed any interest in coming on the show. I'm not going to keep asking him. That's the end of that.

Why is the next funimation show?

Soon! We're working out the details now. Half the people I used to have on the show don't work there anymore, so we're shuffling folks around. We should get it worked out soon.

Have you played the Mass Effect series? What did you think of it?

Yep! For a long time it was my favorite WRPG series - and I loved the original ending to Mass Effect 3 (the extended version was just more clarification, so it was fine, but I didn't need it). Shepard (didn't they say the female Shepard was canon? Because I'm talking about female Shepard) is still one of my favorite video game characters of all time. The second Mass Effect is almost a perfect game.
Then I played The Witcher 3 and now THAT's my favorite WRPG ever.

You mentioned about the Love Live fandom being a small thing for U.S. anime fans compared to other anime fandoms. Do you mean in compared to say Madoka Magica's size or even larger like Attack on Titan size?

maritenya
Attack on Titan is basically mainstream - as close as you can get without being a DBZ-sized phenomenon. It dwarfs everything else we're talking about.
Madoka was a big hit too, but that's within anime fandom. I'm not sure Madoka Magica created a lot of new anime fans, and it never really hit American nerd culture in the same way Titan did. You can buy a few Madoka things at Hot Topic. That's it.
Love Live is niche niche niche - it's a subset of idol fans within anime fandom. Half the time I can't tell if the most vocal Love Live people in my Twitter timeline are being ironic or not, but they sure do spend money on the franchise. Small compared to anime fandom at large in the US. Small compared to the people who saw Madoka.
This isn't to diminish Love Live or its fans at all - it's just not even 1/1000th as popular and successful in the US as it is in Japan.

Why not double feature Angel Beats with Charlotte for the next anncast show discussion. Same writer/staff, and Charlotte will be just wrapping up at that time. Would be cool for the compare/contrast.

The idea was to keep it short so it wouldn't take me a month to watch the show, but I guess it wouldn't take too long to watch another 12-episode thing. I'll consider it.

What do you think of the sketch show The Whitest Kids U' Know?

It was fantastic! For a sketch show that aired on deep cable, they had a surprising number of sketches that rightfully reached an audience much larger than just comedy nerds. Like all sketch comedy it was deeply hit and miss, but when they hit, that show was phenomenal. If you didn't see it, watch Trevor Moore's Comedy Central special - it's really solid work. I'd like to see more from that guy - I think he's an underappreciated comedian, and I think a new sketch show built around him could work really well.

Did you watch The Late Show with Stephen Colbert?

I did! He has maybe the nicest set I've ever seen for a talk show.
Other than that, it sure was a standard monologue-comedy bit-boring celebrity interview talk show on CBS starring Stephen Colbert. There were a few decent jokes, but as with any talk show, you have to wait about a year before the show finds itself. Right now Colbert is nervous and too easy to please, but the Jeb Bush segment showed some promise. We'll see how it's going in a year.

Are you guys still getting review copies from FUNimation? The physical release review flow seems to have slowed down a bit.

We are. Releases always slow down in August and September - it's a dry part of the year. Next week it looks like things pick up again.

Great podcast Zac. I'm a fan of Code Geass, and haven't seen it in years, but that podcast reminded of all the dumb shit I loved about that show. What other shows are you planning on discussing?

Thanks for listening! Here are some of the shows we're planning to discuss on ANNCast:
Angel Beats (this is the next one)
RahXephon
Gankutsuou
Cross Ange
Giant Robo
Macross Plus
Hellsing (TV + Ultimate)
Berserk
Gurren Lagann
Outlaw Star
That's just off the top of my head. We're always taking suggestions for the show, so don't be shy sending them in!
