How is CLYW doing financially? I heard yall were losing money last year...

I work from my kitchen table, Chris works from home and a couple days a week from a co-working space. Alec works from home. We all have other part time jobs.
CLYW is supporting itself, but that's about it. We're actively trying to grow the company right now so that we can get past this hump of "$100 comes in, $98 goes out", which never quite leaves us enough money to get ahead on anything. It's a slow process, and it's a common problem. We don't feel special for our struggle, but it's real. We count those pennies every day and are pretty careful about how we spend them. -Steve

Do you think it's a good idea to go to EYYC even if you're a beginner and haven't ever met other players before? I'm scared, because if I go there basically everyone is going to be "better" than me, and I can't actually be of any use to anyone.

Contests are the BEST possible place to learn new tricks and ideas! Seriously, you're going to come away so crazy inspired, and you're play will make a big jump. Having the chance to go to a lot of contests when I was first getting involved in all of this was one of the best things that happened to my skill level. Go, don't worry about what you can or can't do yet, and have an awesome time. And if you're really having a hard time talking to people, track down any member of the CLYW team and tell them Steve said to teach you a trick. They'll hook you up! ;) -Steve

What do you guys do with return tops that people send back? I've seen some people sending back their blizzards and it made me wonder what happens to them.

A fair chunk of my CLYW collection is stuff that other people returned, ha ha. I beat the crap out of my return tops and I don't compete, so there is no reason to waste a-grade product on me. So it either becomes the return tops that I destroy, or I give them to team members when I see them at contests. Or sometimes they are just total junk and I bury them in a shoebox in my backyard, and have a little funeral and then send pics to the factory so they feel bad and try harder next time. -Steve

Is the Borelias good for the old style of Zach ?

The Borealis is good for everything except looping and offstring. -Steve

What has been your best selling return top?

Hrm....hard to say. I think we've made more Chiefs than anything else, so technically that would be best selling so far. But then again, we made a whole crapload of Big Dippers, so once we sell through this batch that might be our best selling?
Not sure, really. We're a very small company too, so "best selling" is still dealing in numbers like a couple thousand. YoYoFactory probably has more inventory sitting in their warehouse right now than we've ever sold, total, in the history of our company, ha ha. Working on it, though! -Steve

You know what might be worth doing? A tutorial series with one of your team members called "How to Construct a Freestyle" where they can go over the basics of choosing a song, music use, stage presence, etc. If you do it right, it will get lots of good attention.

Man, I've been trying to get someone* to write up a multi-part series on this for YoYoNews for years now. There is sooo much ground to cover, and a lot to really dig into so it's not something that anyone can just bang out in an afternoon. I really want this to happen. I'll have to talk to the team and see what I can get them to do. -Steve
*Tyler Severance. He actually volunteered to do it, and then never did it. You should give him crap for that, totally.

Can you please order a gruntbull swirl anodization to put in your next batch of yoyos? I don't know if you saw their fb post but it looks extremely good and I know I will buy it if you guys produce it.

Chris has been talking to them about some ideas. I'm sure other companies are already rushing to use it, so we want to figure out something that's a little different and unique. :) -Steve

3 years ago , I used to watch a yoyoer called Ryan Perez and he was the reason of buying your yoyos , I'm sure that Mr.Chris know him . What do you think of him ? And have you talked to him about the sponsorship ? ( this question is for Mr.Chris ) Thank you ...

I really like Ryan. He's so good. Haven't seen much from him in a long time. -Chris

What kind of finish comes with clyw throws? such as the scout, bonfire, etc. Are they beadblasted?

Yes most are bead blasted or tumbled. -Chris

Chris what do I need to become a mechanical engineer? I know there's different types but what should I take in high school and college to better myself in this field?

In high school focus on Math and sciences. Rock Calculus. Rock Physics and Chem. Work hard and don't party. Study every day. Work on practice problems. Become a hermit as early as you can. Just study nothing else. For me the trick was teaching myself how to learn. Whatever the school system was trying to teach me wasn't really working. I learn by doing and practice. -Chris

Chris not that it really matters but do you make good money from this yoyo business thing you got going?

I work a second PT job. Steve works like 3 PT jobs. Most of what we make goes back into the team and the community. We do okay and are hoping to get to a better point soon. -Chris

Crusin' down the street with my bip bop, removing that bearings, hitting that strings. Do anyone from the team likes my ryhme (It isn't actually mine)?

Filip Jagiello
I don't understand what is happening here. -Steve

You guys have quite a few team members. Is it hard to manage and keep up with all of them?

Yes. Yes it is. But some are more active than others...so I focus my efforts on mostly keeping up with the really active members, and just trying to keep the entire team updated. We have a private FB group that we all participate in, and the team is pretty good about asking for stuff when they need it. I also try to touch base with each team member once or twice a year, with a long phone conversation or Skype about their goals for the year, what they want to accomplish, and what CLYW can do to help. It's a lot of work, but they are AMAZING, so it's a lot of work that I'm really happy to do. -Steve
