The Netu homeworlds were originally a system far removed from the Curou sector that the quest takes place in now. Netu civilization spread from their original world to three others in the system and proceeded to terraform them. Overtime they began to regard the whole system as their home, rather than the planet they evolved on, the terraformed worlds becoming near mirrors of the original.
Netu culture believed that a strong military was the key to friendly neighbors. Combined with their technological skill and bounty of resources in their system (and neighboring colonized systems) they were able to create an obscene amount of ships, leading them to having one of the largest space fleets of the era.
For a long time they were isolationists, a history of warring between themselves then with various human, vorh, and other factions causing them to regard non-netu factions as dangers to be avoided or kept at a distance.
When the Necrotic War broke out they remained uninvolved for quite some time, only working to fight back undead incursions into their held systems with relative ease due to their fleets. This led to them increasing their isolation as they fortified their systems to weather out the war.
Eventually the Wasps, one of the few friendly allies of the Netu, approached the Netu alongside their new Crystalline partners and managed to convince them to lend their strength to the struggling Alliance of Planets.
Finally convinced they leapt into the fray, their forces ending up becoming the backbone of most Alliance fleets. Without the Netu joining the war-effort it's estimated the Necrotic War would have dragged on for decades or even centuries longer.
After Jadyk's defeat by the Crystal Wasps, Akka-Tor the Lightdrinker descended on the now relatively lightly guarded home system of the Netu with her Wraith hordes. There they devoured the life essence of nearly every living being, including the microorganisms in the soil.
With their homeworlds rendered lifeless, the majority of their race now existed solely in their ships and various offworld colonies. Colonies that were also assaulted by Grand Necrotic Armada forces and eliminated or driven offworld.
In the aftermath of the Necrotic War the Netu approached the Alliance and demanded reparations for their lost worlds or aid in gaining revenge for its loss. The leaders of the Alliance were less than willing to give up valuable worlds in the aftermath of the wars devastation and lingering prejudice against the Netu led to them being given worlds rendered barren or blighted by Necrotic energies.
This in turn led to many Netu turning on their former allies and withdrawing their ships from the Alliance fleets. Often these partings would not be peaceful as the commanders of the Alliance military did not want to lose the valuable and powerful Netu ships.
This of course led to the Netu forming the Pirate Clans and picking up a nomadic lifestyle they continue to this day
