Because they value the feelings of others are more than they value truth. Also, for purposes of guilt assuagement and self-promotion.

Conservatism is reality, Socialism is fantasy. It is easy to see which would be more popular amongst the uninformed and less affluent.
Socialism is attractive to adults for five reasons:
(1) It allows them to blame their own problems and shortcomings on other people.
(2) It allows them to live at the expense of other people, while retaining the feeling of morally superiority.
(3) It is a viable and socially acceptable outlet for the seething resentment they feel toward successful, high-achieving people.
(4) When people fail to meet their own goals and expectations, they cannot stand the sight of others who have achieved theirs. Put another way, misery loves company.
(5) For Champaign Socialists, it gives them the illusion of compassion. The pretense of sympathy for the downtrodden masses provides an opportunity for guilt assuagement and virtue signaling. To this group, looking good is more important than doing good; and likewise, appearing moral is more important than actually being moral.
