How would you talk down a suicidal person?

This is a good question, however it requires a disclaimer.
DO NOT FOR THE LOVE OF GOD USE THIS POST AS A REPLACEMENT FOR CONTACT THE APPROPRIATE AUTHORITIES IF YOU OR SOMEONE YOU KNOW IS SUICIDAL OR THINKING OF HURTING THEMSELVES.
Ok, legalese done.
So, generally there's a break down to dealing with any crisis.
Scene safety being the first: personal safety, partner's safety, patient safety, vehicle's safety, property safety.
We're trained and taught that a suicidal person can also quickly become a homicidal person. With no will to live or survive they can also lack impulse control and attack responders/helpers on the scene. Ask and identify any potential weapons. Knives, guns, sharp/blunt objects all can be used both to kill the patient/victim and other responders. Move all dangerous objects as far from the patient as possible.
Next, address any immediate life threats. Breathing/Circulation in particular. Are they breathing adequately? Do they already have major cuts/injuries? Things like arterial bleeds need to be addressed ASAP.
Once that's been addressed you need to work on calming the individual down. Use a gentle tone. Never accusatory. Do not stand over or crowd the individual. Kneel or sit by their side to lower the likelihood of them feeling intimidated or crowded by you.
The goal is to talk them down from violent dangerous actions to themselves/others and getting them to mental health professionals asap.
Police and Fire-Rescue/EMS cooperate to initiate involuntary psych admissions for those who are a danger to themselves or others and require a mandatory 72hrs on psych watch.
I dont recommend handling a suicidal person on your own. You should ALWAYS do your best to get help from professionals and to get the person to proper help.
The important part is to stay calm and promote a sense of calm and understanding and build a rapport with the individual to gain their trust and get them help.

People you may like

What is something that people on ask.fm wouldn't know about you but most people you meet everyday do? For example, something about the way you talk or walk that can't be expressed on an online platform like ask.fm? (Sorry if the question is too confusing.)

My accent is really weird and dynamic. I pick up other people's accents and end up incorporating them into my speech without even realizing it so I have a really weird accent.

What single piece of technology makes your life easier?

I mean either my computer, smartphone, or my smartwatch...
Actually, on second thought, my pc.
Without it, I'd not be able to spend as much quality time with those I love.
