Bottom line: stop trying to take matters in your hand, help your friends and family in getting professional help, aware yourself about mental health and mental illnesses. Stop thinking that 'it's just there in the head', stop thinking that you'll talk them out of it. Things are serious than that.
P.S. if anyone ever needs help, know that I'm always there and I will never shy away from helping you get the right kind of professional help. Reach out. 🌼

I am seriously agitated reading all these posts on social media on mental health, and how people are posting posting shit crap like, 'I will help you', 'I'm here to listen', 'I want to know your story', 'my door are open', blah blah bullshit. Then there are these influencers and life coaches who come up with things like, '10 mins conversation will make you positive', 'it's all in your head, I'll help you take it out', using terms like law of attraction, power of subconscious mind just to sell out. The more I read posts, hear or watch video of all these people I realised how badly we misunderstand the entire concept of mental health and mental illnesses.
People don't understand that there is a difference between feeling depressed and clinical depression.
People don't understand that mental illnesses are real illnesses fucking up with an actual organ in the body like any other.
People need to understand that there are trained social workers, counsellors, therapists, psychologists and psychiatrists to treat the illness.
If your friend has an heart attack, do you tell them to talk to you or rush them to a hospital? So why do you want to just talk it out if it is an anxiety attack or panic attack (yeah those two are different as well), you don't you tell your friends that you will help them seek treatment rather than inviting them over a cup of coffee. (Which is a good idea otherwise).
All of a sudden everyone has become a therapist or counsellor with no knowledge of psychology or mental health. Will you treat your friend suffering from liver or kidney issues with your own half baked ideas and knowledge? No, right? Then how can you decide to fix someone's brain, a clinical condition, a chronic illness??
Even these motivational life coaches/influencers, guys you can do a lot by creating a healthy culture but not by carrying forward the myths about mental health. You can help in preventing mental illness, help people with healthy mental hygiene (eg. Gym or physical fitness trainers do for our physical health). But mind you guys stop telling people that you can treat their depression/anxiety. You guys are not doctors. Stop talking like yoga gurus claiming to treat choric illnesses with some stretching, get real.
There is a science behind it, there is medical science behind it. There are doctors to treat the brain, there is an entire field of psychopathology to diagnose the problems. People are not stupid that they spend time and resources in years of research behind these sciences.
Talking does help but do you understand that if you aren't trained what kind of responses you might have that can trigger the person leading to more serious problems. If you really wish to help your friends, family, students anyone please read up, read about depression/anxiety first aid, read about right responses, read about triggers, learn to identify them. You can't fight something that you dismiss or aren't aware of.

What is depression according to you?

Zuhair Afridi
Depression isn't always about crying, suicide notes, and pill bottles. Its also about spending all day in bed, skipping work to sleep, over eating or not eating at all, being emotionally distant, Isolating yourself and THE MOST IMPORTANT, CRACKING JOKES OR BEING A CLOWN AND FAKING A SMILE.
Take care of your near and dear one's and always be mindful of what you say to those are struggling with one.
