I'm guessing you've only seen the movie and not read the books;) Because in the books, it goes into much more detail about WHY it's so important to have sponsors. Haymitch explains that if you have sponsors, basically, you will have a better chance of survival. Not because they can help you kill other tributes, but because they can help keep you alive - with medicine, food, etc. When Katniss gets burnt, one of her sponsors sends her a balm that heals it. If she hadn't have gotten that, her leg could've gotten infected and she could've easily died within a day. Hope this clears this up for you a little:)
