If someone says to you “stay in your lane”...what exactly *is* your lane?

GlindaBells’s Profile PhotoWear A Kilt
It’s like saying, “shut up and sing/dribble.” You’ve said something that another person doesn’t want to contend with so they see this trite saying as some kind of trump card. You can safely be dismissed because you should have stayed in your lane or shut up and sang.
The dumb thing about it though is that they could have ignored you all along and been fine. You may have the right to voice your opinion, but no one has to listen to it. “Stay in your lane” is an announcement that you’re particularly touchy and defensive about an issue and don’t know much about it. Which, again, fine, but don’t boast about that for christ’s sake.

What is your biggest complaint about your current phone? Mine is the lack of a headphone jack!

AmericanLass’s Profile PhotoC.
The fact that it’s probably going to die in a few months. Like, seriously, I don’t need a new phone every two years. I really don’t need the newest iPhone or Galaxy or whatever. But I can already tell it’s starting to go kaput. The light sensor doesn’t always work. It doesn’t hold a charge as long as it used to. I’d keep a phone for three or four years if they wouldn’t break.

Dr. Sleep looks awesome! I am so excited about that one for sure! Did you by chance watch Mr. Mercedes? If so, what did you think?

GlindaBells’s Profile PhotoWear A Kilt
No, but it looks good. I don’t have DirecTV but it looks like you can order the blu-ray on Amazon. Maybe I’ll do that. LOL, and of course they changed Holly from a frumpy woman in her 40s to a cute girl in her 20s. The portrayal seems spot on though. Holly also plays a pretty big part in The Outsider, if you haven’t read that yet.

Hi Jesse! So glad you’re back! What has changed in your life since you’ve last been here? 😊

GlindaBells’s Profile PhotoWear A Kilt
Geez, when was the last time I was here? A year and a half ago or more?
I’m an uncle now, which is pretty cool. I can’t maintain long-term relationships, as usual, but that’s okay. The place I worked at forever was sold off to a national chain, but it worked out pretty well. My former boss gave me a nice parting bonus and my new job pays a lot more, is easier, and lets me work from home a lot.
I’ve been more and more reclusive lately. I eschewed social media a while ago, but I’m getting to that age where my friends, even my little sister, are getting married, having kids, but not me. And going out? I remember staying out until two or three in the morning and then partying some more back in the day. Friday I met some friends and when 10:30 rolled around, I was like, “It’s time for me to go home.” Christ, I really am getting old.
I’ve been getting more into outdoors stuff lately. I’m about to drive up to Rabun County for a hike up Blood Mountain. I love it. It’s one of my favorite views in all of Georgia.
Over the past few days, I randomly starting thinking about the GS gang. I didn’t login because I figured no one would be left. But, here some of y’all are.

College Board (AP's, SAT's) recently put out a statement arguing that a strong measure of students' future success was knowing "two codes:" the US Constitution, and computer programming. How well did your school teach you law and programming? Should they have done better?

GSCAustin’s Profile PhotoCAustin
Very little to almost nothing on coding, and the standard American history course treatment on the Constitution. In other words, not a lot.
The “far-reaching” benefits of things like music and chess haven’t stood up to empirical scrutiny. While violin and chess are each culturally and intellectually significant things to learn, expertise means you’re good at chess and playing the violin. And not necessarily calculus, or writing, or reading, or even having common sense.
I don’t know anything about coding, but I have read the Constitution and Federalist Papers. If you’re interested in politics at all, they tend to be like a religious texts. You project your values onto the text rather than having the text inform your values.
A few examples. What is the first word of the First Amendment? Congress. Not state. A later, more enlightened Supreme Court saw the SNAFU here did rhetorical gymnastics to invent a new doctrine called “incorporation” to help solve the problem. How about the disaster of a sentence that is the Second Amendment? Do you have favor gun control? You’ll hone in on that first dependent clause. Against it? Skip to the third and interpret “people” individually and not collectively.
That said, I’m of the firm belief that history is something that must be learned and relearned every generation. The British historian David said that history is an, “antidote to temporal parochialism, which makes us think the only time is now, and geographical parochialism, which makes us think the only place is here.”
Having said all that though, does the American educational system require vast improvement insofar as basic history and probably the single most important professional skill in the 21st century? Oh yes.

So, do you like Chick-fil-a's food? BQ: The San Antonio airport in Texas has banished the chain for their anti-gay behavior. https://www.foxnews.com/us/chick-fil-as-banishment-from-san-antonio-airport-prompts-investigation-by-texas-ag The Texas AG is going to battle. Does anyone care anymore?

ThomasGWS’s Profile PhotoThomas
Oh, I definitely like their food. And as anecdotal as it may be, while the Cahty’s themselves are definitely homophobes, the individual restaurants I’ve visited have always been quite diverse and open as far as their staff goes.
But isn’t it usually conservatives that rail against big government and preach personal responsibility? In this case, the city of San Antonio didn’t want to award another contract to a corporation with the reputation of Chick-fil-A. Free market of ideas and all. Actions have consequences. This seems entirely reasonable to me.

How many of you can 100% honestly say that your opinion of someone you do like/get along with would NOT change if you found out they like/support things you strongly dislike/hate? I’m mostly referring to political views but interpret this however you please.

AmericanLass’s Profile PhotoC.
I can tell you with 100 percent certainty that my opinion very much WOULD change. The stakes are too high. If you have had asked me that question when we all first ventured on this forum, I would have told you that sure, just because disagree on a few things doesn’t mean we can’t hang out, be friends, have a few drinks with each other. Right now, we’re not talking about technical disagreements over things like tax and foreign policy. We’re talking about fundamental and irreconcilable differences about what this country should look like.
I work with people with whom I disagree, and we’re cordial, but we certainly aren’t laughing over our differences at happy hour. None of what I’m about to say is an exaggeration or mischaracterization: in this county, one side is perfectly fine with treating migrants like livestock and locking them in cages indefinitely. One side is okay with the separation of child from parent, not out of necessity, but precisely it is so cruel. One side is hell bent on forcing women who don’t want, can’t afford, and aren’t emotionally prepared for a child to carry to term, even if they were raped. One side actively attempts to restrict the right of the citizenry from participating in elections. One side gleefully guts regulations meant to product our air, food, and water.
So yeah. We’re not gonna be friends.
Oh, hey Apple!

Being an adult is boring! Same job, same people around. But, come on, surely at least one cool thing has happened since we last spoke. Surely!

Well, I got a new car (Audi). I like it so far but hopefully it won’t be too ridiculously expensive to service.
I almost saw someone die. I was at the park and I saw this old guy trip, fall, and bash in his skull. I happened to be there so I called 911. It was pretty gruesome and gave me nightmares. He did live, and now he and his family are suing the city and his lawyers have called me. So I might be a witness in a lawsuit.
I saw Metallica when they came here last summer, which was totally amazing.
What about you?

Neo’s theory 11. If you think all/most of your coworkers are jerks, it actually isn’t them. It is you who is a jerk. Your thoughts?

Neo_gs’s Profile PhotoNeo Wants To Feel A Scooch
That it’s true about 95 – 99% of the time. It’s sometimes true that all your coworkers actually are jerks. There are work places that toxic and miserable. But in life, if all your colleagues are jerks, if every person you date is jerk, if all your friends are jerks, guess what the common denominator is?

In your opinion, where is the line separating things that deserve rights from things that don't, where we should care if something is killed or suffers? Does it include all humans? Animals? (All animals? Dogs? Cows? Flies?) Plant life? Bacteria? (Food for thought: https://goo.gl/W92sx1 )

GSCAustin’s Profile PhotoCAustin
I don’t think there is a line and to the extent that there is one, it would be kind of like identifying that exact point on the spectrum where light is no longer red but orange. We can definitely tell the difference between red and orange but identifying the exact boundary between the two is probably impossible. I think that’s pretty much how it is with rights. Do humans have rights? Definitely. Do animals? Maybe, it would depend on what kind on their relationship with humans. Non-animal life? Probably not.
That brings me to what I think people actually mean when they say “rights.” A right is really nothing more than a very strongly held cultural value. In Western culture, the right of an individual to worship as they please or not worship at all is therefore a right. In other cultures, that freedom of religion would not only not be a considered right, but completely subversive and morally corrupting.
A while back I read this book called The Mind Club that was largely about the topic of this video. The authors’ conclusion was basically that sufficiently advanced AI would be deserving of rights if they were able to actually simulate self-awareness and consciousness since our own brains do the same thing just through different means.
It will probably take at least a few generations though. Accepting AI has being morally on par with humans is just too much for most people in 2018 to process, I think.

How do you deal with verbal harassment from strangers while walking down the street? BQ: is it legal to throw your beverage in a stranger's face if they are making lewd/inappropriate comments?

ThomasGWS’s Profile PhotoThomas
The other day I was walking to this restaurant to get lunch, and this being Atlanta and all, there’s bound to be a panhandler. I usually ignore them but I was in a good mood that day so I gave him a few ones. He looked at me and was like, “That’s all you reptile-ass motherf*cka!?”
I have to say that I’ve never been called a reptile-ass motherf*cka in my life.

In your opinion, are people with a good sense of humour taken less seriously? Like peoplw think they can say what they want to funny folk, and they will just 'laugh it off'?

AnitaakaMabel’s Profile PhotoMabel Bloggs
I definitely think that happens. When I was in the fifth and sixth grade, there was this other kid, who was overweight, who I’ll call David. David was well-liked, because he was a genuinely nice person and could make anyone, even the teachers, laugh. Somehow his “nickname” became “Fat Dave” and he never let on that that bothered him but I can’t imagine it made him feel very good either.

Is ghosting someone ever acceptable? If so, under what circumstances? If not, why?

AmericanLass’s Profile PhotoC.
It’s obviously preferable to tell someone why you don’t want to date or hangout with them. That said, I understand why this is done. A lot of people, mostly men to be honest, don’t take rejection well. A polite and direct, “Sorry, I just don’t think we would work out.” or whatever with respect to being asked out on a date is then often met with an outburst or string of profanities.
Don’t get me wrong. Most grown men can and will walk away in a mature way. But, there is that substantial minority that won’t.
As a guy, I’ve done it in response to a few overly persistent people after I’ve already told them I wasn’t interested. This had to do with things like a jobs, an MLM scam, etc. At certain point, I’m not going to roll around in the mud with someone, I’m just going to block their email and phone number and be done with it.

Can you name a controversial issue on which you consider yourself well-informed but do not side one way or the other? What is a modern conflict or controversy that you consider to be made of two (or more) groups of well-intentioned people, neither of which are wrong?

GSCAustin’s Profile PhotoCAustin
The Syrian civil war seems to be one of those issues. It’s not one rebel group versus the Assad government. Some of those rebel groups are indeed are or are aligned with fundamentalist terrorist organizations. Assad himself is obviously a mass murderer and a war criminal. Russia believes some measure of control can be exerted over Assad and has thus backed his regime. The Western powers want to check Russia’s sphere of influence, so they oppose that, yet can’t openly and actively support the opposition in any meaningful manner for previously mentioned reasons.
So far as I can tell, there are several possible outcomes to the war, and nearly all of them are very, very bad.
I find myself taking more and more moralistic stands about things the older I get so it’s hard for me to think of a conflict that I’ve half-way informed about, and think neither side is wrong. I think this country is obsessed with guns and gun culture. I think that the NRA is a force for political evil. It infuriates that after each mass shooting, the answer is for yet even more guns, not sensible regulation.
That said, I do know that there plenty of responsible, well-informed, non-violent people who are opposed to nearly all means of gun control, from both a technical and moral perspective. These aren’t the people that I’m concerned about modifying an AR-15 with a bump stock or going on a rampage.

Hey! So, are you going to see the new Star wars film? (or is that a siily question!) I'm going next Friday with my bro, and it's actually being put down as part of my rehab!

AnitaakaMabel’s Profile PhotoMabel Bloggs
Hey Mabel! How have you been???
I’m actually anything but a Star Wars superfan but really liked A Force Awakens because it wasn’t total crap like the prequels, and was campy and fun like A New Hope. It was, you know, an entertaining, fun, charming movie.
Plus, I like the Twitter account Emo Kylo Ren, and Kylo Ren’s Rogue One review - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BUX5q0EUtsMJessePinkmanGS’s Video 143455070677 BUX5q0EUtsMJessePinkmanGS’s Video 143455070677 BUX5q0EUtsM
I’ll definitely be seeing The Last Jedi, but I’m going to wait a week or so for the crowds to die down. I rarely ever do opening nights anymore. I

"Work" Jack meets Penelope (vendor visit). Jack wants to maybe try a date. Does Jack write from his work email or personal email to meet for lunch? Jack has her business card. Jack is unsure of her relationship status since he had minimal time for casual chat.

Neo_gs’s Profile PhotoNeo Wants To Feel A Scooch
That can be weird because if you’ve only briefly chatted with someone you won’t know if they’re in a relationship (as you said) and you probably won’t know if they’re interested in you, either. A salesperson’s job is to be friendly and chatty, and a lot of people mistake that for flirtation.
Honestly, I think it would be best to see her in person a few more times to try to get a hold on the situation. Even then, give her a very easy way to back out without actually having to refuse because you don’t want to make her actual job difficult and uncomfortable. Something like, “I have drinks at Capote’s every Wednesday after work. Drinks are one me if you want to come by.” or whatever.

If you could replace some vapid celebrity (say, a Kardashian, Jenner, Cyrus, etc.) with someone more deserving, a more positive influence, who would it be and why? (Some inspiration: https://goo.gl/BGd33B and https://goo.gl/RtqcNU )

GSCAustin’s Profile PhotoCAustin
I’ve become more sympathetic to vapid celebrities over the years. They entertain people and help relieve the stress and monotony of daily life. I used to think anyone who liked the Kardashians was simply an idiot. I would still rather swallow glass than watch their show, but I know women with master’s degrees, with families, who earn six figures who just love it. I’m the one who doesn’t get it and that’s OK. The Kardashians is basically like Sportscenter with a primarily female audience, I’ve concluded.
But, if we’re talking about one in particular, I’d erase Caitlin Jenner. It kind of sucks that one of most well-known ambassadors of transgender rights seems to be a genuinely bad, nasty person. It’s hard for me to think of a particular person because I tend to focus on broad issues that are important me rather than any given individual player.

Apparently, women mostly care about a man's money and his appearance. How are non-wealthy, average men supposed to compete? https://www.yahoo.com/news/men-muscles-money-more-attractive-173158147.html

Neo_gs’s Profile PhotoNeo Wants To Feel A Scooch
I’d add straight men to that category, too.
But, how do non-wealthy, average men compete? Basically in the same way that non-wealthy, average women do. There is actual data behind this, but think about every couple you know, even casually.
Are there a few interracial couples, maybe one where an absolutely beautiful woman is dating a rather frumpy guy? Sure. But, nearly all the rest will be in approximately similar “tiers” of appearance, be of the same race and/or ethnicity, come from similar social backgrounds, etc. Even trophy wives I’ve seen in real life still came from the same basic background as did her husband.
So sure, most heterosexual women may want to date Chris Hemsworth, but to quote the philosopher Austin Powers, that’s just not in the cards, now is it?
If you’re a college-educated man of middling appearance and income then you can basically expect to date college-educated women of middling and appearance and incomes, too. That doesn’t exactly leave you with a shortage of potentially interested women.

Looking back on your middle/high school years, can you tell me something you wish your substitute teachers had done more of? Something they’d done less of? Something you wish your subs knew before class? Something you would’ve liked to know about your subs? Any other thoughts you’d like to share?

AmericanLass’s Profile PhotoC.
The substitute teachers I had back then were basically babysitters. The teacher would usually send in an assignment like, “Read Chapter 7 and answer questions 1, 3, 5, and 7.” The substitute teacher was basically there to make sure that teenagers wouldn’t do what teenagers do when left to their own devices.
Also, usually the sub wouldn’t directly discipline any misbehaving student, but write down their names and let the teacher know. This often really, really pissed of the presiding teacher so it didn’t happen all that much.
I don’t really know of a better way to handle the situation. I think it would be pretty difficult for all but the most experienced teachers to jump in at a moment’s notice and teach what would have otherwise been taught. That sub just isn’t going to know his or her student, how the regular teacher paces their teaching, etc.
