If I would not be in a relationship, as I am now, I would ignore it til it goes away or distance myself, 'cause, oh boy, so many people are being narcissistic about themself and try to use you if they notice they are being crushed on.

...because they want to
...because they have set too high standards and people are not able to reach them.
...because they never learned to flourish a relationship, to grow into it, because that takes too much effort and they expect to be pampered by their partner (more taking than giving.
...because they just want love without the responsibilities and so they fly from one person to another
...because it's easier to go than to stay and work on a relationship.
I think for every human being not in a relationship, there is an individual reason for why they stay single.

Can't speak for every woman. Just for me...people are a disappointment. We are all the bad things that we know we are and we still try to keep a positive picture of ourselves by believing in our good traits, which, in all honesty, we don't live up to. :)
