Any advice for a guy who's pretty good at soloing over changes using only diatonic shapes but wants to step out of the box?

you've got all the shops in the world, but you suffer from Francesco Fareri syndrome - when you get to the end of your 10000 note shred run and you play one note with a bit of vibrato it just doesn't have any balls.
I'm not saying don't play metal, I'm saying that balls in the genre comes from how you end phrases, not the phrases. I don't want to say I'm the master of this, but Martin Goulding really drilled the idea into me and it paid off. I think when I play metal now it sounds like it's got some balls. The vibrato is controlled, defined and aggressive. Exit notes are hit as semi harmonics so they cut through and the speed is still there for effect, but it's saying something. You don't have sex for the sex, it all leads up to the orgasm!

The original MGS was great, tight gameplay and cool story. Then 2 came along and cutscenes took over... I get that Kojima wants to tell his story.... but when you've got more than a feature film in cutscenes in your GAME then it's not much of a game is it? Either that or you're not a good story teller. Let the story come across in the damn game.

When sight reading stacked chord shapes, did you have to memorize what certain shapes look like after a long period of time, or do you still literally read each individual interval between each note?

Sounds great, I mean... it has that new polished edge they've gone for in recent years and doesn't have the raw edge of Ixnay, but it sounds like what I'd expect. It's not excellent by any means, but if it were on the radio I wouldn't buy it.

I don't think of them as tech at all. They're progressive yeah, but it's more about the arrangements and the timbres more than the techniques IMO
