The process is very long. I record and master everything myself, and I have pretty much no idea what I'm doing. I improvise and follow my instincts. It's not even so much about the actual recording process that's long, but the intervals of time between working on a song and forgetting about it. Lately animation has been taking up all my time. A couple songs like "Phantoms" and "Mother Butterfly" were written and recorded in one day, which is rare for me. Normally I'll come up with the music first on acoustic guitar, and then it takes months for me to figure out lyrics to the music. I spend many many hours editing the final recordings. Sometimes I'll record many versions of the same song, only to end up sticking with the first version. In other words, some songs only require a couple of hours to write and record, while others can take more than a year to gestate and grow into something.
