There's not a lack of female playable characters in video games. The majority of video games have an option for gender nowadays, there's just very few games where you have to play as a woman.

i've never played a Zelda game I just thought Hyrule Warriors looked good
In my opinion don't buy it. It's basically a massive fanservice for Zelda fans. If you like the look of it play Dynasty Warriors instead or go out and buy a few Zelda games (Skyward Sword, Twilight Princess, Windwaker and Oracle Of Seasons are my recomendations)
