Hi! Thanks so much. Are you burnt out, or feeling uninspired? Because my burning out left me not wanting to make any art at all for a while. If it's a burn out, just ride it out. Enjoy other things, take time off of art. Soon, your hands will be itching to get back. If it's a lack of inspiration, though, fuck that shit — work through it, keep making stuff, even if it's smaller in scale. Change up the medium, the location, the content, even. Art is my profession, so I don't have the luxury of wallowing in art block anymore; I have no choice but to make my living. Just keep hustling, and it'll pass, just like everything else. Either way, both are temporary feelings, I promise.
I actually don't have a clean-up process! I usually go straight from a thumbnail sketch to lineart. I find that my work looks better when it's as loose as possible. As for line quality, that's definitely something I've practiced for many, many years. If you want to get a good clean line, I recommend studying French & Belgian comics (bandes desinees); they often are characterized by a ligne claire style, or literally "clean line." Practice doing smooth, long, single strokes instead of many small short ones. Another thing that really helped me achieve confident, clean lines was just drawing straight with pen or ink in my sketchbook without a pencil underdrawing. Hope that helps!
Who cares? The more representation the better. It's certainly not being made up for in other spaces, so I'm using Republic City for it when I can. And if we're talking about historical parallels with Asia, everyone traveled there for various reasons. It's not like it was just white people.
There are certain reveals that I check in with my editor first, like release dates, con appearances, cover reveals, etc. But for process drawings, it's generally accepted as long as I'm not spoiling anything.
For illustrators: Natsume Ono, Nicolas Nemiri, Daisuke Igarashi, Warwick Cadwell Johnson, the Last Man team, Takehiko Inoue, CLAMP, Naoko Takeuchi, Rumiko Takahashi..... the list goes on and on.
Of course! Will do.
Yeah, I've added black folk to the Republic City populace bc why the fuck wouldn't there be, haha. I try to diversify the crowds where I can, especially with South Asians, who are underrepresented in... all media. Indian folk, Malaysian and Indonesian hijabi, Filipinos, Bangladeshis. If there's anything y'all want to see, just tell me. I always need inspiration for huge crowd scenes.
Yep, that's him. I totally forgot until my colorist pointed it out, but I also snuck Sasuke, Naruto, and Sailormoon into a crowd scene, haha. And thank you thank you~
Yay!! Frankie loves dogs, like he really really likes to be around them and play with them and try to snuggle with them. Mostly this confuses the dog, but I'm one day planning on getting Frankie his very own boof to be his friend 😂
