Double-digit scorers for West boys basketball,
Important returners and I'm guessing team leaders are graduation of Elijah Tuando.

Do you look in jv football squads ? If so who do you see most effective this season in sjaa
Sorry, too many teams and sports in the area and not nearly enough reporters to cover junior varsity.
Most intriguing team to look out for this year?
Here are the teams I find intriguing. Not choosing "who'll be the best", just the interesting storylines.
Stagg: They had such a strange 2014, with the six-player suspension before Week 0 at Lincoln, the rainout forfeit win at Fairfield and the eventual forfeit win with American Canyon, which was using ineligible players. They should be solid, and probably the most complete team in the SJAA, with McNair. It'll be fun to watch Lavante Bushnell in his second year as a full-time QB, and junior two-way star Cutrell Haywood work through a full varsity season.
Lincoln: There could be a quarterback competition between junior Aaron Thomas and senior Colby Dickson, and word is the Trojans' offense could utilize its newfound speed and open things up a bit. It's strange for a school with 2,800 kids, with that football facility and with the talent of last year to post consecutive 4-6 seasons. The pressure is on, but this could be the right group to change it.
Tracy: The phenomenal senior class of skill position players has departed, but the meat and potatoes of winning high school football, the offensive and defensive lines, are big, talented and experience. So expect Tracy to be tougher than expected.
Manteca: The Buffaloes' pride themselves on old-school football, from the natural-surface field to the I-form, power offense the past couple of years. But, Manteca could open things up in multiple sets to make the most out of versatile senior quarterback Dakarai Charles.
Manteca boys football and basketball will both have section winning years?
Manteca boys basketball is an early favorite to contend for a section championship, along with Valley Oak League foe Weston Ranch, and football always has a chance. The Buffaloes have four all-time, and three under current coach Eric Reis. I'll enjoy watching nimble quarterback Dakarai Charles as a senior. And from what I'm hearing, their offense will open up a bit to account for his versatility. If the young linemen are as good as advertised, it could be a good year for the oldest high school in town.
Lincoln is loaded in the skill position. no more run happy trojans. they will be airing out this season.
Thanks for letting me know! Truly, it helps when you cover over 20 teams.
How do you think saint Mary's will perform now that they have no returners on defense
St. Mary's is still St. Mary's. And I just found out tonight lightning quick WR Keaton Hampton is playing some cornerback too.
Will you be attending any practices before the start of the season?
Yes indeed! In fact, I'm compiling a master schedule for all area teams' practices times and will hit as many as possible between Aug. 10 and Aug. 27
With this new spread look , and two good qbs, how do you think Lincoln will be mixed with a great RB?
Unsure about exactly how their offense will look. I believe there will be less fly concepts than a year ago
what do you think about lincolns chances of returning to the playoffs with two D1 prospects and a loaded Junior class?
Very good. Can't wait for the Tracy at Lincoln game Oct. 30. That could decide an automatic playoff berth from the TCAL.
In the sjaa who are some key offensive players for this season
McNair: QB Osai Brown, WR Derrion Grim, WR Sean Hamilton. Stagg: QB Lavante Bushnell, WR Cutrell Haywood, WR Michael Thompson. Bear Creek: WR Darius Livingston. Chavez: TE/WR Danny Goodacre-Lopez. Edison: TBA. Franklin: WR/RB Jovon Woods. I've answered this question a lot already... but I appreciate the passion, SJAA.
any thoughts on who is or is expected to be the most exciting football player this upcoming season ?
Most exciting is a heck of a question. Stay tuned for my top 10 returning players at recordnet.com/sportsblog, to be released in mid August :)
Who is the favorite in TCAL basketball??
Too early for me to tell for boys. St. Mary's for girls.
Do you just follow football and basketball?
No. If you look back on the past year, I've covered nearly all varsity sports, including soccer, water polo, volleyball, wrestling and more. We've also had stories on swimming, diving, badminton, golf and more. Football and basketball are the two most popular sports in this country, and our coverage reflects that, sure, because we're a business, too.
Do you think Colby Dickson is penciled in as a starter already or does this jv qb have a chance?
I don't think it's penciled in. I would guess junior Aaron Thomas (hope that's the correct name) both have had a chance to prove themselves this summer and in upcoming preseason practices.
Saw Calaveras and Sonora scrimmage at a Central Catholic this last weekend. Gonna be one hell of a football game. One you need to get out to.
I'd love to, just depends on the week and the standings.
Personally I feel as if Lincoln relies on running the ball too much and not enough passing
One of the funnest parts about sports, opinions! Certainly, it's a more old-school offense. I think, though, it can still work in high school. Depends on the team.
How come Chavez lost to Beyer by 1 point in the semi-finals of Staggs passing tournament and is not receiving any publicity? Does Chavez contend for the SJAA?
I've given Chavez plenty of publicity in my time here and if you'll notice, I didn't report on Beyer's 7-on-7 tournament because it's 40 minutes away. I'll head to a 7-on-7 in town, as I did at Stagg, but we report on more than just football, and in the summer, when they're not official games, not every passing tournament success gets reported. That's just life. They certainly can contend in the SJAA and for a return to the playoffs, but it's all dependent on how the new position players step up, and who becomes the vocal and on-field leaders for this team.
Why do you feel that Cesar Chavez High School isn't league champ contenders?
I certainly think they're a dark horse to contend with Stagg and McNair, and I think coach John Ward has instilled a winning culture there. The reason it's fair to expect other teams peaking, is because so many of their top contributors from a year ago graduated. QB Julius Davila, RB Priest Jennings (first-team All-Area), WR Lamar Housely, DBs Sergio Fernandez and Darryl Kapule, all gone. Several solid returners and some potential in new faces, but there is established varsity success with some key guys at Stagg and McNair which leads me to say they're the favorites. Not for sure, but on paper.
Who are the two best teams in the MLL basketball and football going into their respective seasons?
Almost never get a Mother Lode League question on here! Football has to be Sonora. For their area and size, they were getting unfairly made a middling team in the VOL. Now it's their turn to take it out on the MLL. Basketball I couldn't tell you. To be honest, I only saw MLL girls hoops last year. Calaveras had a solid boys team and won league last year, earned a five seed in the Div. IV playoffs. But, there were a ton of seniors on that team.
With Lincoln would Jr Aaron Thomas be a better choice than Sr. Colby Dickson
Like I've said before, I never watch JV play except for briefly before varsity starts. So I've never seen Thomas. I'm guessing given Lincoln's success at the lower levels, it'll be a quarterback competition in camp this year. Just a guess.
Do you think Lincoln can go far in the playoffs with Colby dickson at Qb?
If the rest of the mix is right, yes. I know Dickson had his struggles a year ago, but you wouldn't believe what a frustrating junior year and a productive offseason can do for a young quarterback's maturity. Like some vintage Lincoln teams, this should be one which lives on a consistent running game, in this case, from senior Ronald Walker. To be honest, I'm not sure we'll have a large-school team return to the Div. I or II finals like last year, that was insane.
How do you think the Lincoln Trojans will do this season
After two disappointing, consecutive 4-6 seasons, they'll get it right. Or at least, more right. Lincoln has much more speed and less size this year, coach Brian Gray has told me, and that might be a nice way to separate themselves from a rebuilding TCAL. If I had to choose today, I'd say Lincoln finishes second or third in the TCAL. Home game against Tracy, road game at the Grape Bowl against Tokay are so key.
Can Saint Mary's repeat there section run from last year after losing there entire defense & more than 1/2 of there offense? Who were some key players from that 2015 team that are virtually irreplaceable
It's possible but not probably. The offensive line will be much better and more experienced which is so key, headlined by Popo Aumavae, David Corralejo, Jarrett Carl and AJ Husary. Key players: OL/DL Popo Aumavae, Jr., WR Dewey Cotton, Jr., WR Keaton Hampton, Jr., plus Husary, Carl, Corralejo and whoever wins the QB competition.
Have you heard of any key transfers that could effect teams?
Yes. Great question. McNair is getting linebacker Noah Faatau from Bear Creek, its rival. Faatau is the defending SJAA MVP. That's the biggest one I know of currently. One interesting transfer I saw for basketball season is incoming junior Aidan Green, younger brother to Bear Creek graduate Andre Green, an All-Area second team guard bound for Holy Names University, has transferred within the Lodi Unified School District from Bear Creek to Tokay.
