Well no there's no damage..there's probably a lot of pain though. The only damage that can happen is its over heated , or tumors .

Well because the particles it's holding has no use until it's ready to released for proper or improper reasons. Without its being a holding cell there would be no reason for off-spring and no reason to have the particles
