Why do you need a group to talk to your competitors?

Competitors? I'm a freelance writer, so I write for all of the sites. I don't have any competitors.
But that's not what you're asking about. One of the main things in the group is exchanging contact information for PR people to request review copies of games. Another thing we talk about a lot is organizing time to play multiplayer in a review game before it releases. Editors can also post if they need a freelance reviewer for a game, or we can talk about E3 travel plans to split a hotel room and save money (since that expense usually comes out of our pocket). There are a number of professional reasons why it might be helpful to talk with writers in the same industry.
