I have always thought of hell as one. I have heard that Dante in his very much respected book about hell, "Dante's Inferno," speaks of different levels in hell. I have heard a priest teach and found evidence in the Bible that even in heaven some will be closer to God.
Having spoken about the levels of blessedness in heaven I personally cannot see that they matter much as in heaven we will be completely happy and in no way envious of anyone else. Similarly in hell if there are different levels of hell we will equally unhappy there and get no happiness in our lesser level and hate everyone utterly.

I would advise the person to remember that romantic love is really a love of commitment. This is seen in its basis which is marraige.
I would say love generously (outside of romantic love) as love is not diminished in being given even if not returned.
Lastly and most importantly always love God so completely that your love for others would appear as hatred in comparison. God's love which is seen in all creation is directing us to Christ, the God-man, and to his Church, the Catholic Church. United to Christ we will love as we ought.
