If the universe came with a "how many questions you get on ASKfm a day" dial, where would you set it?
Is this not one of those random daily questions? I'd say about pi/50 radians.
Why are you better than everyone else?
This seems like a loaded question; I wonder what could've prompted it.
Most days I'm reminded that a lot of people are better than me. Why, just yesterday, my advisor basically called my conference paper garbage and said that his other students all submit much better work, and that I still have a long way to go.
When I talk about anime or anything else really, I keep in mind the distinction between opinions and fact claiming. There's a difference between saying "this is shit" and "I think this is shit". The first one makes me want to have an evidence-based debate, but I'll treat the second one in a friendly tone and try to continue a conversation about what the person might actually like. It's just that a lot of the time people only want their opinions validated and don't want to think about "why" they feel that way. There are times when I want to vent or get my feelings out there too, but I make it clear that I'm not making a claim on the objective quality of the work. Just two extra words, "I think" or "I feel", could change the entire direction of the conversation. If you try to make an objective statement, whether I agree with it or not, be prepared to fight me with evidence.
Any chance you guys might pick up Gabriel DropOut BDs? I beg you to at least consider it because the CR translation seems to come from someone who either hates the show or his job, probably both. The show deserves to have a release from someone who still remembers how to sub with love and care.
The problem isn't that the CR guy doesn't like it, it's that he likes it too much and ALSO is having too much fun, has a bit too much self confidence, and styles himself an innovator. We don't have any interest in doing the BDs for it, and even if we did it would just be a lot of pointless homogenization and making it more boring. For the most part the translation gets across the points accurately, but with more flavor than substance. You'd have better luck asking FFF to edit it harder. I know they usually release a couple days late, plenty of time to fix it.
Oh, except for that "homer" line last episode. That was just wrong and bullshit. If you want to see what good but crazy editing looks like, watch ITW's subs for Noucome or Commie's subs for Twintail. I approve of those.
What do you think was supposed to be the message behind Akko losing the race? Like, it was a fantastic episode and I wouldn't dare say otherwise but I thought that she more than earned it with all the training and then the crazy shit she pulled during the race.
Diana has all the skills. She's from a prestigious lineage, she studies and trains hard, she has the experience, and does everything seriously. She's even kind enough to help Akko pretty much every time they cross paths.
Akko has the heart. She never stopped believing in Chariot, she sees the wonder in magic where everyone else just sees a tool, and she was chosen by the Shiny Rod. She also doesn't hold grudges about Sucy or Hanna-Barbara, and tries to make friends with everyone around her (or at least spread the gospel of Chariot).
The two are foils for each other. If Akko won now, it would invalidate Diana's purpose. Akko can't even cast magic unless she's pushed into an emergency, she still can't ride a broom under her own power, and the first magic she did without the Rod was to light the cannon's fuse. It would be like asking why Diana didn't get the Shiny Rod, despite being the best witch in the academy. They both need each other to grow and mature.
What is Canaan? Is it an original work, or is it an adaptation of type-moon's scenario?
You could look up pretty much all the info I have on Wikipedia, but the short answer is that Canaan is an original story sequel to a Japanese only Wii game 428: Fuusa Sareta Shibuya de. From my experience, you don't need to be familiar with the game to enjoy it. But I'm sure you're asking me because of the particular writers and concept relating to it.
So Type-Moon made this original scenario based on the game, and it is super Nasu if you look at the character Canaan's special eye powers (she could easily be a side character in Tsukihime). The way the organizations also do their work is reminiscent of how the Church does stuff in Fate.
Now the writing, however, is dripping with Okada. I've explained it pretty thoroughly on Mezashite's site, but a few things to note are Liang's insane lesbian character, the prominence of the idol's song, and the slow revelation of Canaan and Al's past through flashbacks and parallel plot development, plus the themes that emerge from it.
If you could have your future daughter be like any anime character, who would it be?
An excellent question. Over the years I'm sure there were countless times I've thought about wanting one girl or another to be my daughter. Would it be someone like Oozora Akari, who always tries her best and doesn't take failure for an answer? Would it be Mizunashi Akari, who can see everything in this world through a veil of hope and wonder? Would she be like Sakura Akari, always willing to help a friend in need and not be afraid to dream wide and far? (Will I name my daughter Akari? Yes.) But in the end as I was going through my mental list, one name stood out: Chitanda Eru. A girl whose curiosity knows no bounds, who has an innate desire to know both the intellectual and the emotional truth of the world, but not go so far as to hurt others. Nothing would make me happier than a child who I could impart all the knowledge and wisdom I've gained to, and who I could gently guide to find her own way through life.
Have you defended yourself on Amanchu somewhere visible?
There isn't a huge amount to say. Keeping Otouto-kun-senpai and similar is just a weeb choice that may seem outdated these days, but it's what I prefer. The only time I went against it was Advisor Tea, but who knows if I'll leave that for the batch or not. There was one real and honest mistake in episode 2 with the whole zukkoi thing, but I saw the Nyaa review notes and the rest are just nitpicks and personal preference differences (like Pikari telling Mato that "she should not have given the entry a check" when she jumped off the cliff).
But let me say, my two greatest focuses when translating are consistency and characterization. I have a voice for every character that I make sure stays the same in every episode, and if there's a line that Japanese viewers will know is a reference to something earlier (like Teko's "something bad") I make sure the English viewers know that too. It's important. Hell, they can't even make sure that the episode titles are translated the same way as they're used in the script, which is the entire point. If something I do sounds awkward, it's because it sounds that was in the original too.
Also I don't use inappropriate net slang. You can see this in a bunch of CR shows this season for some reason (Amaama is another example); I guess they're trying to appeal to their target audience or something. Then they also do silly things like use Western name order with honorifics (see Orange). I don't even watch their version of Amanchu before I do mine (or after) so I don't get influenced, but what I do see is just unbelievably careless and lacking in love. I really think that they have different staff on every episode or something.
Lostorage info soon! Hyped? Any last comments or predictions you want to leave before we finally get some info?
From the screenshots I could see three things: More generic character design, probably Studio Pablo again, and... a Selector field? I wasn't thinking too hard about it but it seems that we're getting more magic, which is definitely what I want. If Okada's not doing it (or even if she was) I'd want to see different themes than before, and either not rely on the body swap mechanism or attack it from a different angle. The latter might be difficult though considering how thoroughly they went through all the possibilities in all the spinoffs. In the end I guess I just want more cute girls playing card games with high emotional impact. Maybe Akao Deko will even write it.
When are you going to sub Aikatsu Stars Episode 13?
Are you at AX? If I see you at there, can I have an autograph?
Yes, and sure, but only if I can have yours too.
Who do you like best STAR*ANIS or AIKATSU*STARS?Matthew Jones
AIKATSU*ANIS. There are a few songs like that at least.
What is your stance on herkz?
Master memer. I do use Commie for the prettyness over HS when I have no other choice, and he did help move a torrent for me earlier today, so I guess he's cool.
I think he was asking about the Fire Emblem controversy, but I don't see how it's related to Aikatsu besides the name. Dumb stuff anyway.
Oh, you mean removing the petting game? Of all the things, you'd think companies would know that the entire fanbases of imported and localized Japanese games are weebs who love that shit. If I played FE then I'd be annoyed. That's why I used the uncensoring patches however many years ago I played Family Project. Never finished it though, I think I did one of the young girls and most of the China girl's route.
What thinkest thou of the Soleil controversy as it relateth to Aikatsu?
I have literally no idea what you're referring to. Soleil is the best trio unit though. Ask again with more references.
Have you ever fansubbed for competition? What do you think about such a reason?MantasB
Only for competition? No, though I highly encourage it and love competing. Only doing it to be first or for the downloads is stupid though. Putting out subs for a show you don't care about only leads to self-loathing. Or, more likely, double the hate for whatever show you're doing.
Thoughts on the recent court ruling about idols being allowed to have boyfriends?
I'd like a source, since last I heard it was the exact opposite not even half a year ago.
What's your favourite Pani Poni Dash OP?
Rollcake Sunday, which after looking it up seems to be actually called Roulette.
Would you enjoy the media you consume less if they were mainstream?
No, because I don't base my opinions on what others think. For example, Madoka is still amazing despite it being "casual and entry level" or whatever people say these days.
what is your source for CC's?
When subbing Aikatsu, do you just translate by ear, or do you have access to CC?
For roughly the first season, I would get the CCs and time them to the episode. This was an enormous pain in the ass, because some lines would be split unnecessarily or have two characters speaking at once, so I'd concatenate and duplicate lines. In the second season I stopped altogether and went by ear, but even now I use the CCs for songs and really weird lines. There's no use killing myself out of pride just to be wrong when I can check what I don't fully understand.
Who's the worst fansubber you've ever come across?
Begna, mainly because he slighted me when I was subbing Onee-chan ga Kita (I believe, there's also a chance it was Himegoto). Also, while checking something just now, what's with the staff lists of groups like DDY? That's no longer a group, but some crazy coalition. It's worse than Commie even. The point of a fansubbing group name is to have everything released with that tag have the same level of quality and consistency. The community would be better off with more groups of fewer people.
WIll you do Ao Haru Ride OVA someday?
Probably not. Time is tight, and while I did like the series enough, my schedule isn't open and we don't even have a source (no, if we had a source we wouldn't do it anyway).
Hi, was wondering if you are recruiting any position for Mezashite? I wantChhotu uttam
Hi, was wondering if you are recruiting any position for Mezashite? I want
You want? In any case, Mezashite isn't a recruiting group; we're quite comfortable with our group of 4ish people, and have no plans to expand because every single Mezashite-only release must be touched by the two founders, and we do pretty much everything. There are other groups that constantly recruit though, I suggest flipping through recent torrents on Nyaa to find them.
