Botanically , it is a fruit . . . of a vegetable (cell wall present)
The reproductive organ of a vegetable is known as a fruit .
If you look at the opposite end to the stem (which attaches it to it's vine) ~ you may see the remnants of it's flower's petals .
So, the original halloween lanterns were carved (Scotland/Ireland-org.) from what were commonly known as turnips/neeps , but are actually swedes . . . . are they 'roots' , modified 'stems' , or 'rhizomes' . . . . mmmn?
