I think because strangers can only judge us for a moment... but people we know, like friends and family, can judge us for life. So it may be easier to be our true selves, all guards down, totally vulnerable, authentic selves in front of strangers because we don’t particularly care what they will think... because it’s only for a moment... then it’s gone forever. We will probably never see/talk to them again.

I guess it's because we figure that if we say anything dumb, we don't have to worry about seeing them again.
