1- Wahab, Ali Kahki, Amin Alam, Ehab, Me, Thabet, Amr samir, Islam Hasan. All these were TAs (hence top class students) and had achievements in ACM ICPC. First, believe you could do it.
2- Unless you wanna be TA or do Msc/PhD...NO ONE CARE WITH YOUR GPA. Care about understanding rather than grades.
3- I used to study before midterm and finals. When the exams come i usually stop ACM and give in-deep focus about courses. I could say I used to study like 1.5 months per term. Then remaining (~e.g.. 8-9 months) for ACM.
4- I used to sacrifice some grades. E.g. you can lose 15 grades and still has A. If there is a boring assignment that doesn't have high grade, I probably won't do it...or do part of it. So how to lose grades by your decision? I wanna put less time and get highest possible grade.
5- Some subjects are really important, this were I focus much, as my future needs them explicitly. Sometimes, I don't have much interest in the subject..I play greedy to get hight grades with low effort if possible.
6- In CS, much of assignments & projects are using programming. As we were good in programming, we used to do these assignments in short time and get full grades. That is, being good in ACM, will shorten needed time for CS assignments. Doing assignments help understanding the subject.
7- I used to ask 2 college girls to copy their lecture notes. I don't attend boring lectures or one with low benefit.
8- Focus on understanding and being good CS graduate is more important to your career. As a result, you will also get grades. Care with understanding even if will lose grades.
9- In our days, we did not have real chance to learn good. There are much on-line courses nowadays. Use them to learn and be better student. You are more lucky generation. Many of FCI doctors are not good enough.
10- Learn some simple technique for time management and apply them. Here is 1 simple way:
PLAN 1 DAY only
- everyday before sleeping, determine all your activities to do tomorrow
- write them, when expect to do, the assigned time for that
Helpful guidelines:
- STICK to schedule.
- NEVER do more than ONE thing at a time
- Stop notifications (Facebook, Gmail...etc).
- Never check facebook in start of day. Check it at night, better not every day
- Check email 3 times only: Once at morning, Mid Day and before sleeping
Finally LOGGGGG what u actually did in the next day....before end of day...compare what u did...with what u planned to do...analyse it....discover ur mistakes...solve them
FACT: if u can't plan a day..u can't plan more

أستاذي الفاضل ممكن نصائح للدخول في عالم الذكاء الصناعي والابداع فيه ؟

I will focus my reply on Machine Learning (ML), as one the important AI fields.
It is important to notice the difference between working in ML vs its applications:
- ML is mainly about algorithms to learn from Data.
- Apps "use" ML such as Computer Vision, NLP, Audio Recognition...etc
- E.g. Given an image, we can identify faces/people/cars inside it. This is done by applying ML in a vision problem
- I am a Computer Vision Researcher NOT Machine Learning, but working on my ML knowledge to make it better
- Whenever you see something that uses AI, probably this is an ML app (e.g. text translation)
To work in ML (e.g. invent new algorithms), this is very challenging. You need strong background in algorithms, Linear algebra, Probability theory, Calculus...etc.
To use ML, this needs ML study too, but things are more smooth, at least when in your first steps. Some times we invent specific ML algorithms for vision or formulate a new inference strategy for our models.
====================
To learn ML, your first step is Andrew Course for machine learning.
https://www.coursera.org/learn/machine-learning
or old completed one: https://class.coursera.org/ml-003/lecture/index
After that...there are more to learn...see: https://www.quora.com/I-have-completed-Andrew-Ngs-Coursera-class-on-Machine-Learning-What-should-I-do-next-What-*can*-I-do-next
====================
On the other side, regardless of a specific coding career (e,.g. web..ML...etc), your coding, debugging, algorithmic and thinking skills is critical component.
Optionally, but highly preferred, do some problem solving. If interested, go from here: https://goo.gl/unDETI

Follow up with your sheet

Mostafa Saad Ibrahim
As you might know, My ACM ICPC Solving sheet has the problems to solve and algorithms videos to learn in order. From here: https://goo.gl/unDETI
Rename your sheet to: Junior Sheet YOUR_NAME
===
The sheets idea is important as juniors waste much time in an unorganized fashion, and solve dozens of problems in the wrong directions.
===
In addition, for those who started in Div2-C and solved top 10 problems: If u would like, give me edit access to your sheet to do little follow up. From share menu, write my email: mostafa.saad.fci@gmail.com
===
Notice, this follow up is just a few looking to your stats, writing some helpful comments, but not discussing problems. I would suggest for you to upload your codes to github and link them in the sheet. Or use ideone.con site (github is better)
===
There is a video describing my sheet, which will take for more videos for new comers.

ايه المهارات المطلوب مني كخريج جديد عشان اتقبل في شركات كبيرة ؟

- Inside our outside Egypt?
- Outside in some companies (Google, Facebook, Imo, Amazon) they need algorithmic skills
- Inside: they all need same requirements...good software engineer.
For Software Engineering Career
Build Experience:
- In a Major Programming Language (Java - C#).
- In Web technologies: HTML, JavaScript + Dynamic Web Content (e.g. Servlets/JSP for Java, ASP.NET or PHP) + Web Server (e.g. TomCat)
- In Database: RDBMS (tables style - SQL) + a server (e.g. MySql) + Coding (e.g. JDBC for Java)
- Software Engineering: Understand concepts and build using them + UML
* Pick a medium size web-project .. find partner...and develop it from A-Z...you will have to be good in all above points.
Plus:
- Go Deep in a language - Go and get Java Certificate
- Ajax - JavaScript Libraries - Frameworks (E.g. JSF/Struts in Java)
- NoSql
- Mobile
Projects
- Whenever have choice of a project, select a strong one
- Be careful in your Graduation Project .. select good one
- In your Graduation Project, be a major team member (lead, share effectively)
- Have good internship...just 1 month
Misc
- Share in activities (tech and non). E.g. ACM ICPC (organizer, contestant..)
- Attend related conferences (e.g. JDBC) - Companies Courses (e.g. say course offered by IBM)
- Build soft skills (learn from web - take course...whatever)
- Give courses for students in FCI (e.g. programming courses)
- Learn team work
* Finally, utilize vacations. Plan them to learn something (e.g. share in ACM, build a big project, go in-depth in networking, security or operating systems...)
Further notes:
- TopCoder is a great way to enhance your Design Skills. They have design competitions. Read available docs/projects. See http://software.topcoder.com/catalog/c_showroom.jsp?a=all
- Topcoder too could enhance your coding, thinking and debugging skills. Join ACM ICPC Community.
- Always keep learning with your self (technology, read in design, apply design)...this is how we grow up. Usually planning career is hard due to market opportunities.

The Importance of Projects

Mostafa Saad Ibrahim
"Projects can be one of the most efficient ways to learn as they force you to apply the skills while learning them".
Source (please read): https://sendgrid.com/blog/importance-projects/
The following are notes/links about programming based projects to implement in several learning stages.
*Beginner*
Now you are learning programming...think in some trivial projects to do at this stage while learning. Try to think in example and make it more and more complex while you learn more (e.g. Calculator).
In my C++ playlist, there are 3 videos about 'Educational Management System' project. There are also some other ideas to do. I explain the project and provide initial implementation. The project scale should be a bit challenging for a beginner.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hsEGVVu7_lE&index=38&list=PLPt2dINI2MIZPFq6HyUB1Uhxdh1UDnZMS
Again...don't keep learning concepts...put that in (complex) code.
--------------------
*Little Experienced*
Now you grow up...start to think about the projects you do seriously. Specifically, projects that you will put in your CV. The interviewers check/ask about that section. Don't waste your vacation in nothing! For examples see: https://www.quora.com/What-are-some-interesting-coding-projects-that-I-can-complete-in-7-14-days-to-build-my-resume-for-a-summer-internship#_=_
- There are no sites that provide reasonable projects and their solution for such level. Develop ideas by yourself.
--------------------
*More Experienced*
Now you studied software engineering. Learned more about how to develop large projects in a disciplined manner. Top coder has great collection of projects (docs, design and implementations). http://software.topcoder.com/catalog/c_showroom.jsp?a=all
- If you can participate in open source projects / Google summer of code = great
- Many projects listed on github for open source: https://github.com/trending/cpp
--------------------
- For graduation project see: http://ask.fm/mostafasaad87/answers/138421260002
- For ACM ICPC guys: I never liked being 100% competing and doing nothing else. Please do some projects.

- I sleep 7 hours per day.
- I start my day with Werd from Quran. Followed by 30-45 minutes a religious lesson, probably listening to something while preparing breakfast for my family :)
- PhD is like work. You need like 8 hours per day. If you can be productive in these 8 hours, you don't need to spend more.
- Those who can't get work done in 8 hours, have to work more :(
- You have to do some reading about productivity. I use trello tool.
- I back from work and work as freelancer. I cover around 12-15 hours weekly in some job. Normally work 1-2 hours in working days and cover remaining hours in weekend.
- I have family and baby boy, belal. With little art we learn from Islam, we can put little time to family but they be so happy with it. Others can be in home for whole day, but as if they don't exist.
- So my normal day is predefined: Go work. Back home. Launch and little time with family. Work 1-2 hours. In some gabs, I may answer some questions or put some slides to some new topic in my Algorithms Series.
- Normally, I have like 8-12 hours free each week. I use them to learn some staff that I had weak scientific background. I try to put sometimes to help others. This is "Zakah" on science and Allah like that.

why always in English?

- So sorry for that
- For long time, my keyboad in Egypt had the Arabic letters removed. It takes much time from me to find the Arabic letters
- Even my current keyboard on research lab, has no Arabic letters. If i have to write Arabic, It takes me long time.
- Due to much writing in English, I write in a fast rate, which help me give some hints in a short time and back to what i was doing...hence be efficient. This doesn't mean I am good in English..just write in a fast rate.
- As I am answering technical concerns and our study/reading/writing is in English, I always felt this is fine.

Max time for solving a problem?

Mostafa Saad Ibrahim
Div2-A (The beginners)
- For the first 15 problems, you may think for 10-20 min, then check editorial/solutions. This will let you use to problems styles.
- For the next problems - Idea: Think up to 30 minutes.
- If you can't solve so far, check editorial and implement the idea
- Try to code it up to 30 minutes. If can't, and no progress, see actual codes
Div2-B: Think up to 45 minutes. Try coding up to 30 minutes.
Div2-C: Think up to 60-90 minutes.
Div2-D and more: Think up to 60-120 minutes. For 10-20% of your problems, you 'may' try up to 3-4 hours.
Learning new algorithm/DS: Feel free to try up to 30 minutes for the first 2/4 problems till you realize the algorithm better.
What if trying for a long time make you disappointed? We wanna you keep going. In this case, please adjust with what fits with your spirit. But remember, in real contests no help. So you need to learn to strive more.
What if I can try for even longer time? This is ok. You may set a limit like 6/8 hours. Taking longer in problems will probably mean you solve much less (hence fewer ideas/knowledge) and you may be a slower coder. But it also means you will be stronger and probably won't face plateau in performance in a short time.
Overall, it might be a better idea to try different settings for every 10 problems.
Test cases:
- Getting WA? Fight for at least 15 minutes, then check the single case failing your code.
Remember that, ICPC/IOI is 5 hours. So, we need to learn to strive against a problem up to ~2 hours. This implies 2 things: Those who give up after say 45 minutes will fail typically under real contest pressure. Those who strive for too many hours is preparing themselves to unrealistic mode.
Finally, If you tried in a problem for some time and had to read editorial because it is a bit harder than you = this is great. You learn much more from these problems than ones you get by yourself in < 20 thinking minutes. So don't feel bad.

Let Google be your friend

Mostafa Saad Ibrahim
I receive many questions about things that one can find by himself. In your future, you will face too many questions that you don't know their immediate answer. You have to learn how to search for them.
Let Google be your first friend to ask. You will even get abroad range of answers and perspectives much more than one person can provide.
In Google, one can do many tricks in the search query to get better results. As an example, if I want to search for Dijkstra algorithm code in Java I will search with: Dijkstra algorithm filetype:java
Time to learn more tricks? http://www.lifehack.org/articles/technology/20-tips-use-google-search-efficiently.html
Don't ask anybody what you can find by yourself :)

حضرتك ليه اخترت انك تكمل دكتوراه ب"تعلم الاله " رغم انك بتميل اكتر للبرمجة وهندسة البرمجيات ؟

This is one of the nice questions :)
I graduated with much passion toward programming and SWE. I worked in Fawry in large scale project and was so excited.
After 1 year, I noticed that I started to repeat everything again...it seems for me that, once you learned something, you just repeat it...this was a bit boring for me.
I also asked a friend of me in of the international remarkable companies, when he just started working there..he was so excited in the begin...and needed to work more hours to compete with the strong guys there...and then asked him after 2 years again..he said everything now is easy...and he wishes to switch to another team...as he is not learning new things now
I thought about trying the research field...I tried computer vision field in an internship in Microsoft Egypt and was so excited...the problems are open...the challenges are real and hard....I had competitions background...I like to be a problem solver
I thought research is the right career for me.
So the right question is, why left Engineering for Research :)
I also like teaching..and be more close to students..help them....which is more available for a PhD holder...I also like science....so seems this career more fit with me.
However, this is just me. Many of my friends enjoy the SWE mode..Enjoy going from a title to upper one and do new exiting things. Some of them like to lead a big team to catch deadlines...etc
so...just search for your self :)
On the otherside, ML field and its applications (e.g. in vision) is one of the exciting fields nowadays

Algorithmic solving for interviews

Mostafa Saad Ibrahim
My interviews sheet https://goo.gl/CEwCjS:
- The sheet is for problem-solving preparations for interviews for companies such as Google, Facebook, Microsoft, etc
- Some students find training directly from sites such as leetcode is hard
- So audience are those who find algorithms hard to study and preparation is difficult
- The sheet will be smooth in improving your level to the target level
===
I uploaded my personnel subset of files from my channel that I use for preparation. If you are confused about a file, find its video on the channel. It is 2 folders, the first is the major one: https://github.com/mostafa-saad/MyCompetitiveProgramming/raw/master/personal-public/prepare-interviews.zip

I had big fight with my family. They wanna me go to Engineering and I felt FCI is better. I did what in my mind finally :D....they were sad from me for 1 term..and then was happy latter that I got good rank on class in first term.
Probably, education in egypt is the worst..wherever..you have to depend on yourself
Seems Engineering alex has too many good graduates...FCI has so bad graduates in last years. This info is guessing based on "samples" I met.
you can go engineering and focus on cs..or go directly to cs
you can train regardless of the faculty. Going to coach is not the best thing to do..many people are good and don't train with coach
Try to love a direction..and convince your family with it
=============
Edit 1:
I had the chance to ask a college of me about Computer Engineering department, here is summary of what he said:
1- Their study is 4 years, similar as ours. they have total 5 years (1 sana e3dady)
2- Courses will be similar to FCI, with me be more hardware interaction
3- You already go to Engineering with good grades from High school. Then enter department given good grade in first year. The students in CS are really good students. However, we in FCI, accept already low grade from High school, which makes many students are weak or sad to miss Engineering.
4- A main nature in engineering is the term projects. Every subject has almost real project, which means hey do much effort and learn much
5- GP is important. Grading is tough
6- He believe Engineering CS graduates are strong.
7- His CS class (2008 graduates) where around 40 persons, with compare to mind (100+)
For me, given what I see in our FCI and graduates status...Computer Engineering choice looks much better education chance.
=============
Edit 2:
- I see some clever freinds from Computer Engineering department vote for FCI not Computer Engineering. The Point: FCI is 4 years, don't waste your time in 5th year.
- Some guys claim that Computer Engineering has much hardware..direct question for our Computer Engineering friends, they say NO, this is not correct. Much of what you study, we study + some hardware.
- Market has much from both FCI and Computer Engineering
- Education in Egypt is bad. You will have to depend on yourself in both cases (e.g. 75% on yourself)
- Going to engineering has the risk of failing to enter Computer Engineering department due to the required grading...I have weak info here
- Finally, Both choices are fine. Start to learn from day 1 programming with yourself (no prerequisites). Know about ACM Competitions. You can go from here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YftDmAWjkwA
It is finally your decision..please think much...these answers are just for sake of helping you...you are responsible for your decision...ask others to get more insights.

الان مجال الحاسب فقط ويب وموبايل ؟؟

Time to clarify an important thing for undergrad.
An application such as facebook, it has a web page..and mobile app. Is it a trivial application? No, there are hundred of Engineers working there on several concerns (handling efficiently millions of users, security of data, ads that get money). You can think in dozen of things that happens behind the scene (the backend): Databases, hardware, Clouds, etc.
Another example from the Egyptian market: Fawry. Is it just a web page or POS in supermarkets? No, it is a middle service between (banks = money) and entities that have bills (electricity company, Communications such as Vodafone). I will let you imagine the complexity of interactions and communications for a query starts in the ATM Machine for a bank (out of say 20 available banks), passing with Fawry, ending at Mobinil to mark a bill as paid, going back to fawry to end at the bank to withdraw the money.
Facebook is not a web page, it is a huge social network.
Fawry is not a trivial web page, it is a big payment network.
What is the point: Some students when think in mobile/web apps, they think it is trivial and boring. However, in several of them, much happens in the backend. However, we finally wanna talk to the custoemr through some interface, such as a web interface or mobile interface. The moral of that, a simple web page (such as a google search page), can have the whole computer science in its back to get things efficient and effective to server millions of users.
So don't undersestimate web/mobile apps. A web app is 2 parts: Backend (programming, oop, design skills, data structures & algorithms, database technology, several frameworks) and front end (a framework for the interface such as Java JSF for the web).
Is every app eventually a web or mobile? In Egyptian market, I think yes. Abroad, you may do several other jobs: Machine learning models for Ads, Computer vision models for understanding a video, Embeded world, Infrastructure, Big Data and many.
