What's your favorite musical?
Hmm. Good question. I have to break it up into periods here, Pre-1980 "Classic Broadway" and Post- 1980, the "Disney-fication of Broadway". This is when ALW hit the scene, and B'way became more family friendly and 42nd got a huge makeover.
My favorite "Classic" is "Kiss Me, Kate" by Cole Porter. His work was where I started getting into musical theatre. it's just a silly show and the songs are impeccable. Ever revival gets more and more fantastic.
My favorite "Contemporary" is "Book of Mormon" by Trey Parker, Matt Stone, and Peter Lopez. It's subversive, incredibly funny, smart, and would be the kind of musical I would write if I had any talent at all.
