Before you get pissed, I just want you to know that this is a genuine question and I'm not trying to mock and disregard your choice of music. What's the thing about metal which makes you such a die-hard fan in spite of people hating it? What do you like about the music?
Firstly - I really appreciate your curiosity and I'm glad you asked :)
There are a LOT of things that I love about Metal. For starters, as a guitarist, I find the riffs and solos to my taste. There are many sub-genres of metal and to go into why I like each of them would be a waste of time. So all I can tell you now is that I love the rush and energy that Metal delivers. It may sound like "noise" to others but to me and others like myself, it's a source of energy which is never exhausted. Every time I listen to Metal, it brings the same excitement - it's got that heavy, crushing and lethal excitement - which no one other form of music has succeeded in. And then there's metal which isn't "heavy", "crushing" or "lethal" and that's usually more about technicality (doesn't imply that the others aren't).
Then there's the themes which bands adopt either for the band as a whole or just for an album and these themes are pretty different and curious and the theme combined with the music brings a COMPLETELY different experience to the listener. And for your information, Metal isn't all about gore, death, satanism and everything utterly disgusting. It deals in stuff such as history, folklore, the human mind, consciousness, the universe, nature, and regular story telling among other things.
So yeah, that's the gist of it. Ultimately, when it comes to Metal, "you either feel it or you don't". And if you don't, then you probably may never understand "why".
