How did you learn to speak English? How hard or easy was it for you?

As many other Spaniards, I learned English despite the education system, not because of it. I absorbed as much as I could from the school, which is pretty much a decent knowledge of the English grammar, an only because I was the bookworm type of kid. Most of my peers were perfectly able to sit through 8 years of English lessons and thousands of exercises without learning much. And, as it turns out, the passive voice isn't cool anymore, none of my teachers got the memo though. So, how did I learn? Mostly books (gotta read the latest Harry Potter book NOW), TV shows, and English language forums, as you can find much more people with much more interesting things to say. Spanish online forums used to be pretty shity, as nobody bothered to write more than one line and there was so few people. I also took advantage of some oportunities to travel to English speaking places for free (twice with scholarships and three times for work). I always tried to speak with as many people as possible in my visits, as oppossed to the ancestral Spanish custom of sticking with the pack of Spaniards and limiting English comunications to McFlurry purchases at McDonalds. At first, I learned mostly through books and video games (this was in the early 90s, so no internet yet). English classes in school started in fifth grade, but at that point I had already taught myself enough to occasionally spot mistakes the teachers made. My family moved to North America when I turned 13, and my English improved even further. During my time there my test scores in English were usually close to perfect, and I had no problems keeping up with the other students. I started having English dreams around that time, too. To this day, many of my dreams are entirely in English, even if they feature friends and family who don't really speak the language. When we returned three years later, my English was more or less at the level of a native speaker. My spoken English has probably gotten a bit rusty over the past decade, since I don't really use it much these days. Everything else is as good as ever, though, if not better. I can thank the internet for that, I guess. In school from grade 5 to 10 and then continued in high school (the equivalent) to grade 12. Up until that point my English was rather mediocre. But I continued to "learn" English by watching movies and shows in that language only with German subtitles and few years after that I switched to English subtitles - also (online) gaming and browsing websites in English language. Now ~7 years after finishing school my English is much better than it used to be and I consider it to be a language I am almost fluent in. It's still nothing compared to my native language in some or most cases though.

Reading! I'm a big bookworm :3
My English comprehension was pretty bad in primary school. Funnily enough, we found out that I was struggling severely because I needed glasses xD
And sods law I was the furthest away from the board.. so to me, there was nothing on it other than a blur xD
Once I got my glasses, I improved exponentially!
Sadly one of my primary school tutors belittled me constantly due to how much I struggled. So I lost all confidence in my abilities.

How would you describe your personality? 🙂

I am shy at first when I meet someone, but once I get to know someone better and comfortable with them, I can chat their ear off and become annoying. I talk a lot…..
I am athletic. I like to play sports. Especially badminton, shinny (unprofessional hockey), volleyball and ultimate frisbee.
I am cheerful and positive. I like to talk to people, compliment people, and sometimes I am too positive and people look at me weirdly when I compliment them too much.
I am kind and respectful. I like to treat others with respect, and treat them how I want to be treated. I respect everyone, no matter their race, culture, ethnicity, religion, etc. I’m shy when you first meet me but once I’m used to you I’m going to act my normal self and keep you laughing 24/7.
I’m very sweet and kind. I help others when they need it and be here for everyone that needs me. If you need something important I will make sure I try my best to get it for you.
I love to sing. Singing keeps me calm and makes me happy.
I smile a lot. I love to smile and it lets others know you can get through the day if you just smile. Introverted but highly talkative if you make the first move; perfectionistic; straight-A student with not a lot of common sense, unfortunately; bookworm; musician; daydreamer; self-conscious; absolutely hopeless romantic! Long dark brown hair—if the light hits it just right, you can see my natural coppery highlights. Unfortunately, the light rarely hits it just right. My hair isn't naturally straight (I flat-iron it), but it's not very pretty when I air-dry it (as in it's straightish on one side and curly-wavy on the other side). Dark brown, slightly diamond-shaped eyes with long eyelashes (the bottom ones are very long, but the top ones tend to go out more than curl up, so you can't really tell). I've been told my eyes are pretty three times and once I was told I had “fish scale" dark lines in my irises, how to describe my nose lol. My lips are full and my teeth are straight from two years of braces. Both sides of my family have big teeth, so I have big teeth too. I have an oval face, thick eyebrows that aren't really that dark, and not really any cheekbones that stand out. I look really good in maroon/burgundy, olive green, and navy blue. When I wear makeup, I keep it natural-looking and don't wear heavy, bold eyeshadow or the “brick brows". If you need someone to bring you down from your high horse then I’m here. I’m the guy in the group who presents the problems to a plan or project so they don’t do anything rash. Switches between “morose, depressing and dour.” , “Unhinged, Sadistic and Evil.” and “Completely amicable and affable.” I have no Idea which one will come out when I talk to you.

Do you consider yourself a boring person? And if so, are you content with that?

Great Question! Yes, I am boring. I don't have many hobbies and interests. Well I do have interests, but I don't have much to say about them. These days, I'm in a similar position where people are interrogating me. Once they start, they never stop - until they realize that in fact, I don't do much - which satisfies them. And I guess my personality as a result is kind of boring too. Kind of non existent. I've always been more on the serious side than the playful side, and I don't really know if I want to change who I am. Having a sense of playfulness and being a bit loose I bet is a great quality, a necessary one for making friends and stuff - something I just don't have much of.
Yeah when I get to know people I start to realize how boring I am because I'm usually just on YouTube, reddit, googling random things or playing app games. I never have weekend plans and I notice that sometimes I talk in a dull monotone type of voice. I don't have any consistent hobbies. I just randomly do things every now and then. Also I don't have any friends to drag me out to places. So yeah I'm pretty boring.
Boring to others maybe but I like myself just fine. My hobbies include, Reading (though I haven’t read a good book in a while. Fucking shame on me cause I used to be such a bookworm). , watching Netflix/Hulu, going to the gym 5-6 days a week, watching YouTube, listening to music, playing with makeup, making mental shopping lists for clothes and makeup I want, watching my pet hermit crabs, getting excited when my pet hermies eat the snacks I give them. I’m not really shy but I’m just very awkward. Honestly I think I’m on a high end of a spectrum but just not diagnosed. I’m bad with small talk or starting conversations, i don’t fit in well in my environment. So it has been hard to make friends. I have exactly one friend since I moved to this state and I met her at college. She’s almost 7 years younger than me but we get along because we’re both self titled “boring people” lol we go to the gym together and sometimes out to eat and maybe grab a coffee. We’re both both broke af so we don’t do bar or club shit but I’d be open to it if we had money’s but she’s content to just workout and go home to her doggies.
I’m not really content with it, I wish I had things I was passionate about or even good at like a sport or playing a musical instrument or something. But I just don’t have enough interest in taking anything up like that, and I don’t want to force myself to do things for the sake of being interesting either. I never have weekend plans and I notice that sometimes I talk in a dull monotone type of voice. I don't have any consistent hobbies. I just randomly do things every now and then. Also I don't have any friends to drag me out to places. So yeah I'm pretty boring.

Did you go to parties in high school or were you a book worm?

I went to a few parties but I was more a bookworm. I mostly went because my parents didn't want me to.

Every rule has an exception, looks may be essential, but the appearance is way more important. The overall combination of being well educated, intelligent, open minded, having classy attitude, kinder hearted creates the halo of atrraction, a bookworm in my eyes is way more attractive that a model.

My mother recommends me the Imran Series, which is kinda like secret seven (the series i started my bookworm journey from). Btw do you remember Alif-Bay-pay in order?

Nope, I think most people don't. 😂 Yes, I've heard of the Imran series. My mother used to read them when she was younger. In English, I actually prefer the famous five. I enjoyed them more than secret seven.

Yeah it seems good. I’ll watch it and tell you if it’s any good lol. You don’t watch movies often?😱 what about shows or you’re more of a bookworm? Comedy, action and anime/animated are good. I’m the opposite seen as horror is my fav. I love the suspense, thrill, everything😂

Sounds great, thanks! (:
Haha nope I dont, but yeah I do watch shows 😆 used to be a bookworm but somehow dont have that much time for reading books, yet still i like reading them ^^
Ughh ik what you meaan haha. Actually I like that too. It's just that I am soooo afraid of it and there is no way I could watch it alone! + I get soo paranoid after watching horror movies T_T so better not watch them hahah

How is your Arabic? Obviously you are Arab so can speak Arabic but do you think it suffered because you went to a school that taught in English?

I went to an Arabic school when I was living in Iraq and that was from grade 1 till grade 7 . I never had a problem with Arabic. I’m a bookworm by nature and as a child reading was my favourite hobby. Actually, I was the best student in Arabic class and that continued till high school. In highschool, my classmates would come to me to help them write an essay. I loved Arabic class and the teacher loved me because I was the best student in her class .
When I transitioned from an Arabic school to an American school , I had so much difficulty with the English class at my new school. It was so difficult that I had to take grade 3 english lessons rather than grade 8 level . It meant that I had to go to a different class during the english class. I never got anything over D- in English during grade 8 . For an A+ student that was devastating.
I hated English so much and I wasn’t able to communicate with my classmates as I always felt I lacked in this department. But, Instead of talking I listened and listened and listened until I had a good command of the language.
I remember a time when I was a 13 year old teen and I was out with my mother and siblings. I saw a guy selling helium balloons and I wanted one but I couldn’t communicate with him because he was indian and I wasn’t able to form a sentence so I asked my mother to help me form a sentence in English. My English was so bad that I didn’t know how to say “ how much “ in English.

Well, when I was a little kid, I was a huge bookworm and I was obsessed about my writings getting published in the national dailies. While being in Class 1-3, I used to send a lot of my own stories, poems, jokes and riddles to the Kochi Kachar Ashor of Daily Ittefaq and the Gollachhut of Daily Prothom Alo. Many of them were even published on the newspapers and my parents used to collect and store those copies and proudly tell my relatives to buy newspapers on those specific days.... 😂
But now, I am lying here idle on my bed, typing on the phone and thinking about the course of time how I gradually lost my creativity. Singing - "Ain't it funny how life changes. You wake up ain't nothing the same."............ 😕😕

Hiii tbh i don’t know you pero i like your bookworm side! I wish i had those kaso inaantok ako sa books i don’t know why. Keep reading! ♥️

She was practically forced to do so. But she still felt torn between her old self (a proper, good student and the bookworm type of person that loved things like art and going to museums) and her new, badass strong self. It was like a re-birth, you know, once she changed. Like a caterpillar turning into a butterfly. :')

Lieblingsautoren? Traurigstes/lustigstes Buch, was du je gelesen hast? Welches Buch würdest du unter gar keinen Umständen lesen wollen?

Therealcaly’s Profile PhotoEmma
Asking a bookworm about their favourite book is like asking a mother about their favourite child.
So was von.)

To be honest, I have changed quite a lot, perhaps without even realising it.

HERMIONE JEAN GRANGER, if I were to get into it I would be writing a novel, but I really looked up to her as a kid and growing up. When reading, do you use a bookmark or do you dog ear the page? Do you find it disrespectful or are you disappointed when you find a book that looks old and used (i.e. creased spine, folded or faded pages, etc.)?

AmericanLass’s Profile PhotoC.
I have gotten into the habit of using bookmarks. My mom probably is the one who taught me to take good care of books (She used to teach reading.). I have dog earred books but just ones I own. I try not to do that to library books! If something is wrong with the book, like it has tears or stains then they charge you for it! I don't think that has ever happened to me. I used to have a blue crocheted bookworm (literally with googly eyes). I think it may have broken, so I want a new one (or, better yet, learn how to make myself one!). I also had a book thong-strange name but it was a piece of string with beads and a flip flop charm at the end. I want another one because it broke. I also enjoy the one that @Berdwn colored for me! Yay adult coloring trend! I didn't even think of coloring a bookmark, which is silly because I have done that before! (probably in Girl Scouts)
It intrigues me when I find a well-loved book. How many hands had it passed through? What's the book's story? It's refreshing to know that people can leave behind words that they have written. People die but words will be around forever.
Note: The colors are more vivid in real life.
