In my experience, someone who is sincere has the effect of making us feel good. They are compassionate, empathetic, sincere, loyal, supportive and they actually listen to what we are saying because they respect us and want what is best for us. As a result, they will encourage us to reach for the stars to achieve our dreams because they believe in our abilities and potential.

The person who pities does not recognize nor comprehend our potential. They are reluctant to encourage us to take risks or push ourselves because they fear that we are not capable and will fail in our assiduous effort towards a specific goal. Yes, they surely love us and care about us, but it's like the story of the glass being half full or half empty. The person who pities us see's us as a glass half empty while the sincere person see's our glass as half full. I suppose it is a matter of perspective, but it is through this distorted lens that they see the world. Personally, I prefer to see my world as half full rather than half empty and therefore, I would reject those who would discourage me from achieving my dreams because they pity me or are afraid that I might hurt myself. I will not be pitied. I will be treated with respect and dignity for who I am, my humanity and the content of my character and not for my perceived limitations.

Remember this: every human who has ever lived has experienced limitations of one sort or another. That is part of our shared humanity. And so, I would say that the sincere person and the person who pities, both understand our inherent limitations. The difference is that the sincere person is not afraid of our limitations while the person who pities us fears that our limitations will hurt us and therefore they are predisposed to restrain us which has the unintended consequence of discouraging us and potentially contributing to our loss of hope.

Have you ever lost someone you love? Someone whom you would do anything for, even if it meant sacrificing your own life to save their life? And yet, when they leave us, we feel empty... a void... and a deep sense of loss, as if our own internal flame has been extinguished. We may even sense that we have lost our way, and our will to live.

And as time passes, we wonder where they are, and if they are ok. We spend countless hours reminiscing, reflecting and recalling all the good times that we shared together. And we wonder what our loved one is thinking. We pray that they are ok and free from pain. We ask: "are they resting in peace?" Mostly, we just want to reach out and hug them and tell them how much we love them and what they mean to us. Then we make them a solemn promise, that we will never forget them for as long as we live.

Each day, as the sun rises and the sun sets, we try to walk in their shoes as we imagine what their final thoughts might have been.
