I read something absurd today—apparently some 'rich' people think dishes like potatoes or tomato-cucumber salad are 'poor' food. Do you think food can really be categorized for rich or poor people? What about nostalgia or cultural foods?

▪️Food is already categorized for rich and poor but they forget that we can all buy food for the rich, it's just not worth the money. 😅
▪️I think the “cultural food” has already created two dishes, for the poor and the rich. I can say the rich plate isn’t worth the money. 😅

I've been trying to lose 15 pounds for a while, but my weight has stayed the same. What am I doing wrong? Should I cut off my daily calories and do more exercise? Any advice will be much appreciated.

FreshICYGirl’s Profile PhotoBe Yourself Always
I'll tell you what I know.
If your weight stays the same, that means that your calorie intake is equivalent to your energy expenditure over time. If you want to lose weight, then realistically, what that means is that you have to spend more energy than what you take in daily. When this happens, your body will break down fat cells to seek the energy your body is demanding.
Every person's body is different. Not only for energy expenditure but for calorie intake. For example, one person eating a 200 calorie meal probably won't give both of you the same amount of calories overall due to factors such as enzyme levels, and how hard your body has to work to deconstruct the food into energy (metabolization). This is one of many reasons why you can see certain people eat like Kirby but seemingly never gain weight, haha
The best way to lose weight is to force your body into remission, which is done by overworking yourself through high intensity physical activity. This process will naturally hurt and make you crave to eat since your body is pulling at your fat cells (stored energy) and wishes to replenish them. At the same time, get a journal and write down what you eat daily, and get a good feel for your calorie intake daily. You can replace some calorie dense foods with fewer calories but just as filling. Celery, for example, replacing pizza as a daily snack. Theoretically, that could be all the change you need.
I would say the high intensity workouts 4x a week for an hour each session would account for 30% of the overall change, while the change in eating habits would account for the other 70% to lose weight. This means you can lose weight with just a diet change, just not as fast.
Hope this helps.

Have you ever felt severe anxiety after making an expensive purchase, thinking that the same money could feed the people around you for an entire month, especially when you see them struggling for basic necessities like food?

nousernameavailable31645’s Profile Photo♠phlegmatic♣
I did feel guilty about buying myself one medium sized and one small sized box of sushi because my mom told me that I could’ve made myself something at home instead of buying overpriced sushi. That made me feel guilty because she said I was getting used to spending too much money on sushi when it isn’t even necessary and that I was being too carefree with money. I could’ve gotten myself more food for less money if I haven’t gone to the store and bought sushi that day. It does make me sad to know that there were/are better options and that some can’t even buy the foods they actually want because they aren’t able to easily afford it. That’s why I also felt guilty that I bought makeup remover for myself a while back when I don’t even wear makeup regularly. All that money that others save up to afford basic necessities whereas I’m taking it for granted sometimes. However, I do think that treating yourself to a nice expensive meal sometimes is ok but only when there isn’t food that’s already made at home and you do it on rare occasions.

M1ssSemy’s Profile PhotoStar. i
It shouldn't be but I think a lot do categorise it. I will on occasion look at someone eating caviar and think they are rich. There is always going to be foods that bring back memories of childhood. I remember eating lamb stew at my grandparents house. Every culture has their own foods specifically for that country.

M1ssSemy’s Profile PhotoStar. i
Well… Here’s what I know about this topic (and of course, this is largely from an American perspective).
Throughout history, various foods were categorized as rich or poor people’s food due to price or quantity, or both. Like, for example, lobster, back in the day, was deemed “poor people food” because there was so much of it at all times, that it was fed to prisoners amongst many others, and was even referred to as “poor mans chicken”. 🥴 A modern day example I know of is that something like instant noodles here in the US, is referred to as “poor people food” (whether it’s jokingly or not, I think depends on who is saying it) because it’s typically super cheap, and notoriously what broke college students eat a lot. And also, a lot of heavily processed foods, in general, tend to be cheaper than whole foods that contain more nutrients, which is why many low income households largely rely on them to get by, sadly.
However, it seems that this varies between countries and is not a “one size fits all” situation. And that likely goes for many cultures too, depending on what food prices are, and what is traditional to eat for those people. The cultural side is not something I have really any knowledge on though, so I’d need to read up on that. 🤷🏼‍♀️
If we’re getting real technical about it, I guess you could label any food/dish as being primarily for “rich” or “poor” people depending on who has the most access to it, or who relies on it the most. But I’d say the classification of “poor” food by rich people is likely more prominent because rich people can basically afford any food they want, whereas poor people, sadly, cannot. 🤔 And even more sad than that, rich people tend to look down on poor peoples lifestyles in general… They harshly critique a poor persons food choices without having a single clue what food insecurity feels like, and to not have enough money to be certain that they’ll even get a meal that day. Or to have to ration the little food they have, and stretch it for days or maybe longer, in order to make to their next paycheck, or get food stamps, etc. But, they don’t care about that, cause they eat anything they please… So they just turn their nose up and judge unfairly. 😒
So, I think, technically, can foods be classified in those ways? Yes, because depending on where you live, and what you commonly eat/can afford, you might view other foods outside of that to be out of your range, or notice that it is marketed towards a different segment of the population than you. Is it good that this happens? No, not at all. Is it absurd? Yes. But it doesn’t stop it from continuing… Cause even I grew up hearing people around me use that terminology fairly regularly. 😅

Maybe in 19th century poor people ate mostly cabbage, corn and potatoes, meat they had only during Sundays. 🤷‍♀️ Nowadays we divide meals into healthy and not healthy ones. 😅 We are cooking our traditional Slovak meals in our family. They are mostly made of meat, flour and white cream what is not very healthy😅. "Healthy vegetable" is just in the form of soups or stew porridges, and in the raw form only lettuce, tomatoes, cucumber and pepper 🤷‍♀️. The new trend here is to visit Indian, Korean, Arab and Japan restaurants here and to try their meals, but because these meals are unusual and oriental here, they are expensive.

I bet even the Royals get fish and chips from a local chippy every now and then, even though the workers there aren't told who it is they're providing for 🤣
Rich people who happen to be snobby may look down on poor people who go to fast food restaurants like MaccyD's, order their meal and sit down in there to eat it, but in my opinion, that's fine dining for the working class 🤘

People who have QUIT being vegetarian or vegan-- What made you give it up?

I was vegan for five years during my early twenties. Though I suppose, given that the reason for my veganism actually had nothing to do with not wanting to eat animals, "plant based" might be a more accurate label for what I was. Prior to that I was pescatarian, then veggie.
These days I'm neither vegan, vegetarian, or pescatarian, and there are a bunch of reasons why that is. The main one being that eating a strictly plant-based diet made my already rather disordered relationship with food much, much worse.
Another reason why the diet became unsustainable for me is because I also like to travel, and when I go somewhere new, I like to be able to experience the culture as much as I can-- including the food. Being plant based made that very difficult and sometimes even impossible, depending where I was.
Also, selfishly? I just missed a lot of the foods I used to enjoy. Eggs, real cheese, milk chocolate... Plant-based replacements just weren't cutting it for me.
In the end I just sort of reached the conclusion that my diet was making me sick, tired, and needlessly miserable. So I started steadily introducing animal products back in. I didn't start eating red meat again until earlier this year though, after I was diagnosed with an iron deficiency and advised to either go on supplements or change my diet.
I suck at remembering to take pills, so changing my diet seemed the logical choice. 😅🤷‍♀️

Do you know how to use chopsticks? How often do you eat with chopsticks?

lostineden’s Profile PhotoM.T.
Yup! I'm a little clumsy when it comes to certain foods but for the part, I find eating with chopsticks pretty easy. If ever I am out at an East Asian restaurant, I'll almost eat my meal with chopsticks. I use them at home sometimes, too. 🍜

When you go to a restaurant, do you avoid getting the foods you’d typically make at home and usually go for something different?

I like ordering food thats just too hard to cook at home or doesn't make sense to do at home because not everyone likes it.

When you go to a restaurant, do you avoid getting the foods you’d typically make at home and usually go for something different?

Froyh’s Profile PhotoMerve
It depends on the complexity of ingredients. An item I won’t make at home is a cheeseburger. While it is easy enough to make, there are several ingredients one could use for toppings.
If I go to a burger place, I’ll have choices of 3-5 cheeses, 6-12 vegetables, 6+ sauces/condiments, 2-3 types of buns. I would need more than 2 dozen ingredients at home. Most would expire before using all of them.

It would be challenging for a restaurant to make the food I make at home the closest my food resembles is a cross between Italian food and Mexican food 😊 I've been to both types of restaurants really good too Grazies Italian which I get the lime chicken with rice noodles in Stevens point and Betty's tacos Mexican food I get hard shell tacos in la Crosse once in awhile 😊

If you could brew a potion that would aid you in any sort of way, what kind would it be? 🥣🍶

TobbeAsks’s Profile PhotoTobbe
I’d want a potion that would temporarily take away all of my dietary restrictions so I could eat whatever I wanted on certain occasions (holidays, my birthday, other people’s birthdays, parties, while traveling, etc). And I know, it probably sounds like I’d be enticed to make this potion every day so I never had restrictions, but I think the joy of having that potion is that it would be a treat! 😋
Like, maybe it’s not so easy to brew or it takes a long time, so I only use it when I really feel like it’d be most rewarding. 😄 Like, if I knew I wouldn’t have to worry about going abroad and having to consider what foods I can/cannot eat, I’d just bring that potion so I could eat all of the local cuisine without a problem. Or if I’m going to a party, I don’t have to be nervous that whoever is hosting it won’t have anything I can safely eat while there! I can just enjoy the party as intended. That’d be absolutely wonderful! 😁

What do you do to try and keep a healthy diet? Like, to not cave into your cravings etc. 🍌🍏🥗

TobbeAsks’s Profile PhotoTobbe
Eating healthy is hard for me all the way around, as I already have so many restrictions. 😅 But, what I’ve been trying to do lately, is not cave into late night snacking too much. And just trying to squeeze in healthy/semi healthy foods whenever I can. I also try to not allow myself to get too hungry, cause that doesn’t help with cravings, or with deciding what to eat. That’s when it gets hard to say “I’m gonna make healthy choices” and turns into “What’s the quickest thing I can find to satisfy this feeling?”
What I do most of the time to help with cravings is sugar free chewing gum. It takes that feeling away for me, and tricks my brain into feeling satisfied (temporarily). But it does seem to curb my cravings more often than not. If that doesn’t work though, I try drinking a tall glass of water. Might sound weird, but sometimes your body can mistake thirst/dehydration for being hungry, so I’ll drink the whole glass of water, then wait 10-20 minutes. It doesn’t always work, but sometimes, I find my cravings (especially for something salty like chips) either disappears completely, or is not nearly as intense anymore. 🤔
And finally, I always try to find alternatives for my cravings. Like, if I’m craving sugar, things like fruit, sweet potatoes, oats, smoothies, yogurt, etc are good alternatives. And depending on where I’m at health wise, usually dictates which of those is safest for me to eat. 😄 When it comes to savory stuff, that’s a bit harder, as I can’t eat nuts, seeds, hummus, or even plain popcorn as is recommended (which is where the gum or drinking water can help for me personally). But I do find, that salads/fresh produce in general really helps too! And if I have some protein/cheese in a salad for example, that helps with the salt cravings as well! Or if I’m not able to do that, than even just protein alone, like rotisserie chicken, eggs, etc. Those are both satisfying and filling. I at least know I’m still getting some good nutrients, and I can feel content with my choices. 😋

Do you count calories or do you eat until you are full?

mustch’s Profile Photoryan
I used to limit the amount of times I’d eat throughout the day and wasn’t much of a person who consumed snacks or sweets anyways so I didn’t feel the need to count my calories back when I was trying to lose weight. I was physically active and that’s what made it easier for me to lose weight as well as stay in shape. These days, I always eat until I’m full and have been craving sweets every so often as a result of my appetite going up due to the medications that I’m on. The lack of physical activity isn’t helping me stay in shape either. Idk how to count the calories in the homemade foods I eat anyways and it’s never been a priority to me.

Do you prefer to cook or eat out?

I do like to cook, but eating out is my favourite! If I'm allowed to class it as a hobby, it's probably one of my favourite ones. I love trying new foods and places to eat, as well as visiting old favourites. I'm looking forward to my birthday because my boyfriend is taking me out to an Indian restaurant which I haven't been to in a while. I can't wait! 😁

When cooking, how much do you usually make? 🍲

TobbeAsks’s Profile PhotoTobbe
Way too much or too little, never in between.
I have to make food so it lasts for my husband's lunch and two dinners. Sometimes, with rice, I accidentally make too much of it.
Other times, with gourmet foods, they only last for one dinner.
What's worse is, then you have to cook almost daily and do food shopping more often.

Which is your favorite holiday foodwise? What do you eat then? 🍗🐟🥔

TobbeAsks’s Profile PhotoTobbe
Definitely Christmas! I stuff myself with all the food. We usually have a fry up for breakfast, then a roast dinner. A little buffet or "picky bits" in the evening, then I personally stuff myself with so much chocolate until I feel sick. I always regret eating too much, but I just can't help it. You're allowed to over indulge at Christmas time. Easter is a close second because chocolate is honestly one of my favourite foods, but Christmas wins it because of the variety. We do the same for Boxing Day, and we have all the family around. It's a good time. 🙂

I always liked Indian holidays (like Diwali) and birthdays due to the big amount of good and delicious homemade foods being shared! In my opinion, absolutely nothing can beat this.
For my own holidays I like Christmas the most: we have a big breakfast with freshly baked bread, matzo, freshly made spiced tea, different spreads and this bread with almond paste in it. 🤤 during the day we don’t eat much, but during dinner we have our typical Dutch gourmet: grilling small pieces of meat and vegetables. I always like to make mini burgers and to season everything well. ☺️

Gee everywhere you go there are local delicacies. Asian food is an adventure but anything fresh can give you “Bali Belly” real quick. I really appreciated Scotland’s local foods, even haggis 😋😂😂

Wow you're so basic.

Those places have special qualities that I’m interested in experiencing has nothing to do with basic, BASIC would be a tourist coming to Canada and going to experience the stupid Niagara Falls. Or CN tower. That’s basic, these countries have Old timeless places and qualities that I want to see, the old artifacts and builds that makes these countries beautiful, doesn’t matter where you go it’s what ur looking for when you’re there. India has some of the most beautiful places and one of the best street foods. Maybe your MIND is basic

I get bored easily. 😅 I need to change something in my life in a rotational manner at all times. Usually it’s furniture, the book I’m reading, the art mediums I use, the foods I cook, the music I listen to, etc. Today I decided I was bored with the name and I wasn’t in the mood to change the pictures like I usually do. It’s a quirk of mine. I need to keep things interesting.

Umm. I'd suggest for people to put their phones down and go on a hike, go chill by a lake, have fun at the beach, go on natural trails. Enjoy nature. Have picnics at parks, in forests, it doesn't matter.
I would go if I could. I'm so sick of being at home and having limited mobility at this moment. But soon enough I'll be able to enjoy my walks again. I want to travel, hop in the car and go to another country. Look at the architecture, enjoy different foods. Go to museums.

If you for whatever reason moved away from the country where you currently live, what things would you miss the most? ✈️😕

TobbeAsks’s Profile PhotoTobbe
The food cause there is nothing quite like biting into a hot, fresh samosa or savoring a bowl of creamy daal chawal. And don't even get me started on all the amazing street foods - from gol gappas to chaat masala and of course, there are other things I miss too - like my family and friends back home. But when it comes down to it, there is just something special about food that can't be replicated anywhere else in the world. 🌻✨️

If you for whatever reason moved away from the country where you currently live, what things would you miss the most? ✈️😕

TobbeAsks’s Profile PhotoTobbe
At first, it is exciting. You don't really think about missing anything. What you do think about is this new, exciting life and environment you're about to have. Everything smells different, tastes different. Feels different. You feel like a completely different person.
And theeeen it starts piling up on you. Like a blanket that's full of rocks. Heavy. You feel like you're suffocating and don't belong there. You miss the wind, the trees, the grass. Everything. You miss the freedom you had in your own country - the familiarity. You feel alone, misunderstood, and judged. In your own defence, you start to misunderstand and judge others as well.
In the end, it gets so worse that you don't even want to leave the house anymore. Although it wasn't as bad as you think, it's very hard mentally. The vivid dreams you start having of eating foods they don't have. The memories keep coming back. It feels like someone pulled out your tooth and you keep touching the empty space.
Now, moving back is another thing. You're excited to go back. Like you're stepping away from that dep.res.sive place you hated so much - the place you didn't belong in.
BUT, you've come to realise that you can also miss the place that you didn't belong in. The pizza, the environment itself. The excitement of the country you know nothing about. Even though when you've spent years there and realised why you ha.ted it so much, the best thing was to enjoy the moments - all of them.

Yes ; our bodies can develop intolerance or allergies to food as we age. I can’t drink wine either because I am allergic to sulfates.

I did go through a period where I felt nauseous at the thought of eating any food but thankfully that went away. I had heartburn when I was eating Nutella at one point and I thought it was because of Nutella but it didn’t happen the last few times I’ve had it so I guess it was just a coincidence that I had it while having Nutella.

I also like to make stir fry! With chicken, noodles and a mix of wok vegetables! Once cooked I pour on some soy and fish sauce! 🍜
Then I recently got a good recipe by a friend of mine for a casserole which incorporates pasta penne, tomato frito, creme fraiche, red pepper, onion and garlic! I'm thinking of making it again tonight. But this time adding in some chicken! 😋

Have you ever tried to lose weight by eating smaller portions? If yes, how did you deal with the hunger?

The whole point of losing weight is to eat about 400-600 calories less than you burn per day. You can basically eat everything, as long as you mind the portion size.
Certain foods are very calorie dense and some are very low in calories. You can eat bigger amounts of low calorie foods compared to calorie dense foods. When loosing weight it’s important to eat a good amount of protein. Protein sources are often calorie dense foods, so it’s adviced to find a balance between low calorie and calorie dens foods. This way, you won’t feel hungry!

Is it common for autistic children to be picky about food? My cousin's child hates greens. She isn't even 3 yet, but if a food has greens in it, she deliberately picks them all apart, then repeatedly says loudly 'I don't want greens, I don't want greens, I don't want greens

I’m not sure if I’m on the spectrum since I never got tested for it but, I used to eat spaghetti as a kid and now, I can’t get myself to eat it. I don’t like the appearance and texture of certain foods which is why I also can’t see myself eating squid or octopus. I’ve always liked salads and never had an issue with greens thankfully 😁

When you have a sick day, how do you usually spend it? 🤒📺📖

TobbeAsks’s Profile PhotoTobbe
I usually like to take things slow and focus on self-care like curling up with my loved one or watching some of my favourite shows or movies - something that doesn't require too much energy but still makes me feel happy and relaxed and try to make sure that I am staying hydrated and nourished by drinking plenty of water and eating healthy foods if possible. And sometimes, just getting some extra rest can be the best medicine. 🌻

Do you think it's funny how many young men these days are so soft and picky? Like those who eat 'gluten-free, sugar-free, low-fat carbs' or ask if their hand cream is paraben-free. I know their ancestors who used to hunt and eat veggies straight from the ground without washing them are judging them.

Fun fact! The human bodies ability to digest certain foods changes over time, we adapted to be able to process certain things and lost the ability to process others, so our changing dietary requirements aren't necessarily being "soft and picky" but rather evolutionary as a result of our changing lifestyles and environments. But I guess that's not as fun as making judgemental posts online eh. The more you know and all that.

What's one of your favorite things to cook? Feel free to include the recipe and / or a picture if you want! Am looking for some inspiration 🍳🍲

Recently we've been using meal kits (namely, Hello Fresh) for most of our dinners, since it works out slightly cheaper for us. It also has us eating a wider variety of foods and trying new things which is a good thing. Both myself and my partner are creatures of habit and if left to our own devices, we'd literally eat the same stuff all the time... 😅
One of our recent meals was a vegetable chilli with kidney beans and spinach and peppers. I didn't take a picture of it, but it was really good. Served with rice. I also added a little grated cheddar on top too because what meal can't be improved with a lil bit o' cheese? 👀🧀
