Tita, I live abroad while my family is still in ph.

First things first. Do you have an emergency fund? 1-2 years' expenses in a liquid account in case you get sick or lose your job? Kung wala then you have no business thinking of investments. Secondly, unless you already bought your home abroad (given diyan ka mag-sesettle and it's not just contractual work), you shouldn't be buying property elsewhere. First of all you won't reap the benefits of your investment. Second it's hard to manage that from far away. Third lupa lang siya so you'll still have to build that if ever you go home. Meanwhile if you secure your emergency fund, secure your housing abroad, and save more money, there will always be homes to buy anywhere you want to go. Don't tie up your money where you can't benefit from it or get it out in a bind. Andaming ahenteng gusto kunin ang pera ng overseas Pinoys who aren't savvy with their money. You're trying to secure your place abroad and get citizenship. Direct your finances and efforts where you are. The Philippines is an uncertain market and you can't watch your investments there lalo na kung lupa lang. Ok lang if that's your throwaway money you'll never need or care about. But if you don't have security where you are, pretending that a land purchase elsewhere gives you security is a dangerous thing. That land won't save you if you break your leg and can't work for six months.

What was the worst weather you have experienced, and what did you do that day?

I woke up from a nap on Sunday evening to find that we were being voluntarily evacuated. I considered sending my wife and daughter ahead so that I could watch over our home, but found that only my vehicle had a full tank of gas. Thus, my truck was packed with the few things we felt comfortable grabbing, plus our three cats packed into bankers boxes, my wife, and daughter. We were too hurried to grab any food. We found ourselves on the highway traveling south at about three miles per hour with about 150,000 of our closest friends. We left at around 7pm and arrived in Roseville about 1:30 AM. It’s normally a 45 minute drive. I saw more than one person open carrying a firearm. Still, with the exception of a few people who were caught looting, we did okay. The storm passed, the dam stayed intact, and we went home the next day. What did I do? Aside from driving, I eventually read books, slept, etc. Second, we had the Camp Fire (2018). I think most people have heard about it. I’m not sure if it counts as “weather,” but it certainly should. The Air Quality Index sometimes read well over 400. School let out a day early for Fall Break because we were worried about kids breathing in the very visible ash falling from the sky. What did we do? We spent as much time indoors as possible. We waited for rain. We cursed PG&E. We watched TV. We read books. We watched the news. We grieved for our friends and neighbors to the North who had lost homes and lives. Living in the Midwest cold weather sucks period but a remember back in 2001 being on a job site where the weather was -5 with a windchill of -23. There comes a point where you’re so bundled up in under armor cold gear and carhardts that you cannot stay warm or move effectively where you just need to get in your can and go home.
Back in 1991 I had to run away from Mount Pinatubo in the Philippines. In the same day, we had a typhoon, a volcanic eruption, and earthquakes. I was smart and ran to my then-wife’s family in Pangasinan, then went to Wallace Air Station in San Fernando, La Union. I have had the unusual experience of seeing 2 mushroom clouds over the spot where my house used to be! Most of my friends, however, went to Olongapo, the home of Subic Naval Base. There, they got whacked with a direct hit by the typhoon, the earthquakes, and the ashfall from the eruption. At the height of the typhoon, while it is raining black mud, the recall siren goes off and all the military people need to go stand out in the falling mud. Best part? The recall siren went off due to a short circuit!
Power was out for nearly two weeks, school was delayed, three people had been killed by flying debris. My sister and I spent a week at our grandparents’ house as roads were cleared. When power came back on, I heard whoops of delight along the street. The storm was a “derecho” a rare event where several thunderstorms merge together into something like a mini-hurricane.

What is your dream travel destination?

nai269549’s Profile Photoʟᴇɪᴀɴ ♕
Maldives. I’ve already been to the Caribbean and Hawaii and they’re both the most beautiful I’ve ever been to, but I wanna visit the Maldives since I’ve never been there before, and they’re so isolated. Some place with good diving & surfing, such as Hawai'i, Fiji, Philippines, Indonesia, Australia.
England! I was able to go in 1999 and since I’d been in love with it from afar all of my life it was a dream come true. Now I want to go back desperately and hope to actually get to move there one day. It felt more like home than anywhere I’ve ever been and my heart will always long to be there.
Oregon for the redwood forests or Scandinavia for the mountainous scenery and culture.
I second Scotland, one of my favourite places for a break, the scenery along the west coast of Scotland around Glencoe, Fort William and the Isle of Skye is some of the most spectacular mountain scenery you will find anywhere in Europe. I've done a few cycle tours around Scotland, but I had planned to visit during 2020 and do some hill-walking, maybe parts of the Cape Wrath Trail and the West Highland way and a few mountains in between, the walk from Cape Wrath to Glasgow would be 650 miles, maybe this year!
Scotland! Luckily, I went about a year and a half ago for three weeks. It was INCREDIBLE. Everything I ever dreamed of. I still think about it every single day and look at my photos and videos often. Half my anecdotes start with, "When I was in Scotland...". I'm that annoying person :) I've wanted to go since I was little. I have always been a history buff, and also thought Scotland was the most beautiful place I had ever seen (I was right). I went to some archaeological sites that were on my bucket list. I was waiting for years for someone to go with me, but my friend circle has the fairly normal Canadian 4 weeks of vacation and they like going to warm beaches. So as a 30th birthday present to myself, I decided to go solo. Hopefully one day I can live there for a bit.
Both are destinations that are so far away by plane that most American tourists have neither the financial desire or ability to go there, as flights typically require a stop in NZ or Australia before you get to the island. As a result, you get far, far fewer obnoxious tourists and a much more authentic, unspoiled tropical paradise than say, Hawaii.
if we’re talking Christmas holiday, on my couch with my dog and cat watching A Christmas Carol and having some cookies and milk.
I really want to stay in one of those "over the water" hotel rooms. Maybe Bora Bora.
Switzerland and Austria. I was supposed to go around Christmas time in 2017, but I got pregnant and cancelled the trip. Someday....😭
I have always wanted to visit Egypt and see the pyramids and other ancient structures. I don't think I will ever get to.

Tita how to lessen feelings of insecurity about my economic status and the guy I'm dating? He never made me feel like there is a differrence bet. us in this aspect but I get nervous at the thought pag ipapakilala na niya ako sa family and friends niya.

Poverty is traumatic. Financial insecurity is traumatic. In a country like the Philippines were economic disparity is thrust in your face daily and is what decides one's success or level of received respect, it's very hard to shake off that feeling of inadequacy and insecurity about one's financial background. I think this is something you need to process for yourself and not just in relation to your partners. Your background has given you so much and has allowed you to develop values one wouldn't have if they grew up financially comfortable. You are more driven, more mindful of economic differences and the nuances of status. You identify more with the real people that actually run the country. You understand actual struggles more. You value your education more. You take less risks. You don't use material wealth as a worth factor. Etc etc. Dig up your strengths and values and have some pride. No one with money will ever have the values you have, no matter how they try. Meanwhile you can have everything they have learn everything as you go. Be a little more proud of yourself because I am proud of you. And anyone who doesn't like you because of your background does not deserve you. Period. Full stop. End of.

tita, help. i'm the 3rd party, si guy is in the process ng divorce and they have 2kids ng ex wife nya. ginusto ni guy na mag baby na din kami, and im now 7wks preggy. pero iniwan nya ko sa ere kasi ilalayo ng ex wife sa kanya kids nya and mas pinili nya mga bata. wala sya balls para i-let go ako.

There's no divorce in the Philippines so unless you're in another country you should know that annulment is an expensive and very lengthy process. Pero alam mo yan nung naging mistress ka. "Ginusto niya na mag-baby kami " and now "Wala siyang balls i-let go ako." Puro siya ba ang nagdedesisyon? How about what you want and what your plans are? Hindi ka nabuntis na gusto lang niya. Hindi ka gumamit ng protection kasi gusto mo rin yan. And "hindi siya maka-let go" but ikaw naman ayaw mo din kumawala. Seven weeks is very early but if you're having this child it needs to be your priority. Hindi niya iiwan ang family niya, and that's how it should be if he's a good father. But that also tells you kung anong papel mo sa buhay niya, in case you still didn't know by now. You have lots to learn in the next few years as a single mom but I hope you learn to be accountable to yourself and to your child. Hindi ka paanakan at parausan lang. May sarili kang desisyon. What is it? What do you plan to do with your life? Huwag mong hayaang siya ang director ng buhay mo. Obviously iba ang priority niya. Ikaw anong priority mo?

Would you ever like to have a handmaiden?

I never realized until now how much I really hate that word lol
But, i feel like everyone would like to have one. A part of me wishes that i lived in the Philippines or South Africa because its very normal to have people who help you in your home. I had a friend when I was younger that was from the Philippines and she would go to her house every summer. She would show me pictures of the women that worked for her family there (they were apart of her family) & I used to be so jealous that she had someone who did her hair everyday for her lol id love to have some extra help around the house lol

Do you know much about the history of your country? If you want to, maybe share a bit of history? 😄

LunarHuntress’s Profile PhotoYentl
Our country was under Spanish rule for 300 years and that started with the arrival of a Portuguese explorer Ferdinand Magellan in 1521 who headed the first Spanish foray to the Philippine islands. The Philippines was subsequently named after king Philip II of Spain, and among the many infuences the Spanish had on our country was the introduction of Roman Catholicism.
The Philippines was also once an American territory, and was briefly occupied by Japan during the second world war as well.
Our country is also known for the historic 1986 EDSA People Power Revolution where through peaceful means a dictatorship was toppled and a new government was established.

Hmm well here is a bit of trivia for you.
It is generally held that Australian Aboriginal peoples originally came from Asia via insular Southeast Asia (now Malaysia, Singapore, Brunei, East Timor, Indonesia, and the Philippines) and have been in Australia for at least 45,000–50,000 years.
The Dutch first sighted Australia in 1606 before Captain Cook claimed the land for Great Britain in 1770. The First Fleet of 11 boats arrived at Botany Bay in 1788 to establish New South Wales as a penal colony (receiving convicts until 1848).
After British colonisation, the name New Holland was retained for several decades and the south polar continent continued to be called Terra Australis, sometimes shortened to Australia.

Do you like to travel?

I never pass up the opportunity to pack my bags and go find some exciting ways to fulfill my passion for brand new experiences.
I travel to come back home. Sounds weird but after traveling and coming back home you're not really the same person as when you left. You find out new things about yourself and you see normal stuff in your regular life from a new perspective. I used to complain about mundane stuff aka "first world problems" but after seeing how life is for some people, I don't complain as much. (Im a Canadian citizen born in the Philippines). I'm really into photography and I wanna see and photograph as much of the world as I can. My girlfriend also never understood why I loved traveling so much because she just didn't get it. She would question why I would budget and save just to spend it on traveling after our bills and expenses were taken care of. I asked her where her dream vacation was and she said santorini. I took her on a trip through greece for our anniversary last year and I think she gets it now haha. She experienced new things, saw things she only saw in photos before and tried amazing foods, plus the shopping. Now we travel to at least one new country every year. You see a side of yourself you never knew before when you are in a different land. That is when you are fully who you are, dealing with strangers, dealing with circumstances you never face in your normal life. You get a sense of connection to the world and for me, it feels like I am reconnecting with a life I may have lived in the past. It almost feels like I'm traveling to find pieces of myself. It gives you thoughts and feelings that your regular life will never let you see.
I grew up dirt poor and had one family vacation (to the coast of my state). I was then a poor college student who couldn't afford to go anywhere. Going to a couple of nearby cities (~2 hours driving distance one-way) was always a treat. So I knew that as soon as I got a job after college I'd want to go places and see the world (especially since I live in a small town). On that same token, going places also makes me appreciate home more and I don't ever get that grass is greener on the other side feeling. I haven't traveled nearly as much as I have wanted because of the job I had until last year but I am working on that now. I won't be able to travel as long or as often as you all seem to here (3.6 weeks a year is what I have available to me) but I hope to do an international trip every 3-4 years. I've seen most of the US so I want to see the rest of it (need to do New England and the rest of the NE mainly). And I want to go to Canada which wouldn't be that difficult.

Sa mga AskFM users from the Philippines, ako lang ba ang need gumamit ng VPN para maka login dito sa Ask??? If I don't use VPN, nag e-error ang login page kahit may internet naman ako. Pero pag nag VPN ako, nakaka log in. Ang problema lang ng VPN is walang Philippines sa choices.

What error message are you receiving?
It might be that askfm is blocking your source ip address on their firewall. Do you know if anyone else from the Philippines who uses a similar network address is experiencing similar problems?
When I worked for the State of New Hampshire as a Network Engineer our network would frequently receive "denial of service" attacks where I would identify and block either the specific source ip address or an entire block of ip addresses. I also identified and blocked ranges of addresses for web sites hosting pornography and other inappropriate material.
If askfm is blocking a range of ip addresses originating from the Philippines, it is probably because these addresses generate data traffic that violate their terms of agreement and network security protocol.

I don't trust this administration anymore. My stand about this didn't matter though I suggest they both rest from all of this. They're are both old, ruled by emotions. This will always lead to irrational decisions.
If President will stand with Sec. Duque, then great friendship. But that's not the Philippines needs right now.

Where do you think the Covid19 virus originated from? Do you think the virus came from bats or was it genetically engineered by humans to destroy economies while simultaneously reducing the elderly population thus saving money on medical costs and retirement benefits?

It absolutely originated from the P4 bioweapons lab in Wuhan.
The Chinese Communist Party will do everything in their power to deny that because they will be forced to pay every country in the world reparations in the hundreds of trillions of dollars. It will destroy the Chinese economy and lead to the overthrow of the CCP.
The CCP will move quickly to create a global geopolitical distraction to move the narrative off accepting blame for this act of war - and it is an act of war the CCP committed
Expect Taiwan to be invaded before February of 2022 if countries start pulling out of the Beijing Winter Olympics. The CCP will also kinetically attack the Philippines and Australia, as well as Malaysia and Japan.
There was no bat. No one from the 1000 mile flight path from the Laotian border to Wuhan got sick. No one. But the CCP closed every military college in China in November of 2019 because they knew the transmissibility of the bioweapon was high and they needed the military students to protect Beijing - not Wuhan.
China’s economy was failing starting in 2018. The CCP was putting hundreds of billions of Yuan into their banking system and stock markets to keep them solvent. The 100th Anniversary of the founding of the Chinese Communist Party is next month. “Losing face” in the Chinese culture is a fate far worse than death. The CCP could not allow their economy to fail at this time. But they could not stimulate it enough to keep it from failing. So they released their bioweapon to destroy the global economy. It’s simple misdirection.

Actually i get what the NYC asker points out but I still think your answer is not anyway diminished by the clarification. We have to forget our life in upper class middle life in Manila if we want to start a new life in a new country. It's a tradeoff we have to highly consider.

In the first few years I lived in NYC, my father always criticized me by saying, "O, tagalinis ka pa rin? Nagpupulot ka pa rin ng tae ng aso?" as if these jobs and tasks made you less of a person. I get that he felt bad that I was an educated person doing these things, but majority of people who live in privilege in the Philippines feel that it is beneath them to do these jobs, which is sad. "It builds character," I said. And it did. Not everyone can make it as an immigrant or an OFW. Their sentiments and ideas about life, social standing, and reward are key. To this day my father still criticizes me and says that no matter how successful I am, if I still do my own laundry and clean my own house, I'm nothing. I think pegging your success on paying people crap to do the things you as an adult should be doing for yourself means you measure success by the number of people beneath you wiping your ass. Wipe your own ass. Don't bother people. Take care of yourself. No matter what job you have, living independently is the measure of success. Not putting down others is the measure of your worth.

Do ya guys think that Covid comes from a lab accident or the Wuhan's market? And do you think we will ever know the truth?

The virus absolutely did not come from the wet market. Why did not one person between the China / Laotian border where the bat was said to come from not get sick in that 1,000 mile flight path?
The virus came from the lab. Lab workers started getting sick in November of 2019. This is a very dangerous time for the Chinese Communist Party. If the CCP is found to be complicit, every country in the world will take the CCP to the ICC - International Criminal Court in The Hague - and win. Plus there will be millions of individual lawsuits against the CCP. The economic consequences are staggering.
But the CCP will start a geopolitical catastrophe before they will allow themselves to be removed from power in China. That will come in the form of another bioweapon release or an outright war against Taiwan, the Philippines, or India.
The CCP does not recognize decisions made by the ICC and have ignored the ICC’s decision to grant the Philippines ownership of a substantial area in the South China Sea.
So the world is in for some very tough times unless the CCP is removed from power internally.

hi tita, how can a father abandon a child then proceed to be a good father to other kid? i dont get it and also how can they still decide to continue the pregnancy when infact they dont have a plan to nurture and love the kid. how can they be so cruel

Haha that's a major chunk of fathers in the Philippines? Aside from unplanned pregnancies, young parenthood, and no good models for parenting, the fact is that many parents in the Philippines did not want to be parents but are just forced to because a child was already born. The result is that they resent parenthood and neglect the child, then when they're ready to be parents they're good to that child. It sucks and the children suffer. And your question about going through with pregnancy, how can they not when abortion is not legal? That's why we need to support free, safe, and available termination of pregnancy. So we can stop the neglect of people who don't want children.

Titaaa, I read your thread about going after the one you love and it says there na iniwan mo lahat in the Philippines for her. Did your family have a hard time accepting your sexuality po? I’m scared of “outing” myself po.

I've lived away from home since age 15 when I went away for college. When I started living with my girlfriend in my early twenties, I simply informed my parents where I was going. I was already financially independent then, and I think it was clear that if they objected to anything I did that would just remain their opinion. I don't think they're more open-minded than other parents. I just wanted to be treated like an adult so I acted like it. Adults like your parents don't ask their parents permission for anything or tell their parents who they have sex with. That's your private life. Respect yourself and you will be respected as well. That said, coming out is never easy. Financial independence is a fantastic prerequisite though.

It's actually a mainstream Island cuz many tourist travel there every year but there are actually more beaches out there waiting to be discovered. Samal Island is currently my favorite travel destination as of now❣️ The peaceful and aesthetic view are breathtaking and flabbergasting.?

I’m sure your bond with your sister will be just as close, at least there’s FaceTime and such, but I know it’s not quite the same. Aw, wish I could give you a hug! 🤗

Do you agree that mental health awareness is the least talked issue in the Philippines? If not, then what do you think is the least prioritized one?

Actually mental health is pretty talked about in the philippines especially among young people however the way people (mostly the older generations) look at it is as if it's just in people's imaginations.
People should talk more about child trafficking because recently there's a huge influx of people selling inappropriate and illegal films of children. Those monsters need to pay for the disgusting things they do.
