#shitposting

Wenn ich so an die deutschen Shoutouts denke, vor denen ich mit meiner VPN überwiegend flüchte, sofern ich nicht komplette Langeweile verspüre, finde ich das Meiste oft enorm oberflächlich und irgendwie ... befremdlich. Ansonsten bin ich eigentlich ganz zufrieden mit den persönlichen Fragen, die manchmal eintrudeln, weil manche auch direkt Themen aufgreifen, die Teil meines Lebens sind oder interessant erscheinen. Ich war schon immer jemand, der gerne über die unterschiedlichsten Sachverhalte geschrieben und gelegentliches Shitposting betrieben hat. In letzter Zeit fühle ich mich ask aber immer weniger zugehörig, weil meine Gedanken immer wieder zur Vergangenheit finden und es fühlt sich seltsam melancholisch an, Fragen zu beantworten, vielleicht liegt das aber auch einfach nur an meiner nicht zwingend frohlockenden Stimmungslage.

So sehr ich gerne tiefgründige Fragen beantworte, vermisse ich häufig den Humor oder ein Teil der früheren Community sowie die verschiedenen Bubbles. Ist irgendwie so, als würde ich durch einen digitalen Friedhof wandern mit den restlichen Usern.

Mir ist das gestern irgendwie nicht aufgefallen, hätte es niemand erwähnt. Ich nutze zwar Instagram, aber meist für sporadisches Shitposting und Beiträge, die ich alle paar Wochen/Monate poste. Bei WhatsApp kommuniziere ich am Tag nicht ausgesprochen oft. Ich bin eher bei Telegram und Discord unterwegs. Facebook besitze ich ansonsten nicht.

Abhängigkeit von sozialen Medien ist schon seit geraumer Zeit ein gängiges Phänomen. Wir sind digital sehr stark miteinander vernetzt und ein Ausfall dieser Medien ist für viele Menschen unangenehm, weil ein selbstverständlicher Aspekt der eigenen Internetpräsenz plötzlich wegfällt oder pausiert ist. Die schockierte Reaktion ist zwar für manche albern und stupide, aber es zeigt für mich, was für einen großen Einfluss Social Media auf jede einzelne Person haben kann und das sollte man ernstnehmen und diskutieren, nicht banalisieren.

Es ist für Menschen mit einem gesunden Social Media Konsum zwar übertrieben, bei einem Ausfall von 24 Stunden Anxiety und Unwohlsein von vielen zu lesen, aber tatsächlich schon ein Symptom unserer Abhängigkeit, das man definitiv ernst ansprechen und kritisieren, nicht aber kleinreden und mokieren sollte.

Zcela upřímně řeknu, že by se mi docela líbilo mít hlas, který má dosah. Těšilo by mě mít publikum, které by reálně zajímaly moje názory, se kterým bych mohl sdílet nejzajímavější vědecké fakty, svoje shitposting vtipy a vůbec. A celkově mít v tomhle moc, mít kontakty, mít možnost se ozvat nějaké známé osobnosti díky tomu, že za mnou stojí skupina lidí tvořící nějakou mou net worth, jestli mi rozumíte. To by se mi vážně líbilo.
Na druhou stranu. Absolutně bych nezvládal rub téhle vítězné karty. Nezvládal bych být pod drobnohledem, přicházet o soukromí úplně ve všem, co dělám. O to niterné soukromí v tom smyslu, že moje publikované názory najednou nejsou jen moje - že musí být formulované tak, aby nehrozilo, že špatným způsobem ovlivní větší masu lidí. To by mě nekonečně děsilo.
Nemluvě o tom, že i kdyby byl ze stovky lidí jen jeden kretén, přijde mi, že u influencingu se tenhle efekt hrozně střádá. Nevím, jak moc by mi na psychický zdraví dělalo dobře, kdyby se do mě takovejch kreténů denně opíralo několik stovek nebo nedejbože tisíc.

If you are active on SV, that information is certainly news to me, and I'm perfectly fine with anyone doing anything based in any way off of anything I write, say, or do. After all all my own quest is is a biological take on A.I. Quest. I never trademark anything, nor would I want to. I am now, however, rather mad at the idea of someone using my name to put a stop to somebody's fun, and I feel like it's somewhat of a prime example of why I wouldn't want to move there if mods are going to enforce that kind of stuff, if it was a mod that did it.

They're being facetious, basically. I have a lot of Australian stat nerds I follow on Twitter, & they're very involved in the "anti-anti-census" shitposting community. They make some...not unreasonable points, but mostly tbh it's just 30-40 something white dude suburban professional monocle-popping.

I guess I should say more about it, I've got another question here somewhere, but basically the Facebook comparison is bullshit. We could get into the fine-grained details of why they're different - the corporate vs state reaction to information, & the most-overlooked aspect, which is that the state could easily just SELL our data TO companies like Facebook to make revenue - but they can most easily be countered by reminding ppl that just because a bad thing is already happening doesn't mean another bad thing should be undertaken carelessly.

I've been doing nothing but shitposting for a few days (er, more than a few days) so I'm going to try and knock out some of the GOOD questions that've been sitting for a while to make up for it.

I've had a few people tell me that my writing has given them something to look forward to during shitty unfun times in their lives, which is more than I could ever have hoped for. I myself would look forward to Decu's Magical Girl Noir Quest since it'd start around 10AM my time and give me something to read and enjoy during slow morning shifts at my gas station. (When you have chronic insomnia, a 5:45AM wakeup call can make for some rough workdays!) And people have sent me things as thanks - Panzerhexen sent me a Mio figurine that several other people chipped in for as well, and Panzer has also sent me Strike Witches mango and stuff. Panzer opened Pandora's box with that one; once people figured out how effectively sending me questionable weeb figurines would embarrass me in front of family, there was going back. People have given me a LOT of things - they even convinced me to make a paypal way back when and someone dropped 20 bucks in it, which I used to buy KSP, and every time I play Kerbals I think of that guy. This is aside from all the things others have done for me without any asking or prompting whatsoever; the scads of art Decu, Halley and pixelfag have made for me comes to mind.

I don't want to leave anyone out who's thrown so much as a little stuffed figurine from a con or a $5 steam game my way, but then the lines blur because a lot of these people are my friends. The #SWQ IRC channel is full of people I'm happy and proud to call friends; an entire community that has coalesced from all around the interwebs. That, right there, is still the most incredible thing to me. I distinctly recall a time when I felt pretty alone, even on the vast and terrible interwebs - even among military nerds, people who read Shaw's Fighter Combat without being held at gunpoint are *rare.* I never expected my scribblings to make me friends, or a community. And I've met some *very good friends* because of this stuff - friends that've improved my writing and changed me on a personal level, I feel. The kind you never forget.

And lastly, but far from least, I recently had someone tell me my writing had made a significant difference in their own personal life. We all have That Book or Books that we count among those that changed our lives - I never, ever imagined anything I wrote would be "the one" for someone else. It's not my doing, IMO - plenty of books out there that would've done the same, and with much better execution - but you never know when someone will stumble across your work *first.* I've always hated cancelling threads or producing crap writing on general principle, but now I can *really* rebut family members who tell me I'm wasting my time and effort - it matters. It really does matter. Even my amateurish bullshit, it matters to someone.

The Sentinel was mediocre. Producing a mediocre tank by kitbashing existing features and even entire parts from other tank designs into a design that local industry could manufacture was absolutely amazing. Achieving mediocrity with so little materiel and time to work with was a true accomplishment, because a mediocre tank available in numbers in time to fend off an invasion is far, far more valuable than a good tank still on the drawing board when the enemy captures the factory. Considering the primary threat to Australia was a possible Japanese invasion - and the woefully lackluster nature of Japanese armor - the Sentinel would have performed admirably.

Discussing the Sentinel itself as a "fucking good design" obscures the real genius - fucking good engineers. That was some MacGuyver shit, right there. If that's what Aussies could do with popsicle sticks and gum, imagine what they would've cranked out with some lend-lease factory tools and materials!

Also this tank has a gigantic codpiece on the front. Just look at it. That's a gigantic god-damned codpiece right in the center, right below the barrel, there. And it would've worked fine. Imagine the Japs seeing that coming, this tank with a gigantic blunt dong on the front while the crew shouted over their three engines: "STRAYA, CUNT!"

I'll be the first to admit I don't know tanks terribly well - at least not compared to the autismo levels of investment I've put into WWII period aircraft - and I know far less about modern systems across the board, so what I know about modern tanks can fit into a teacup.

I can share an insight I had while researching all those old WWII planes, however. No matter how bad the aircraft, no matter how flawed or obsolete the design or how mind-numbingly retarded the parent company was, it was very, very rare to actually find an inherently bad aircraft. Even the Brewster Buffalo, which has been recorded in countless history books as "one of the worst fighters of all time" is still called the "Pearl of the Northern Skies" by the Finns who beat back the Red Air Force twice with it. The Navy's F2A-3 model was loaded down with so much fucking equipment it couldn't perform a simple loop (the F2A-2 was a far cry from that abortion,) and the ones the Brits used were equipped with underpowered airliner engines - that were bought cheap, because they were ALREADY worn out! Thus did its reputation suffer.

But consult pilot accounts, performance evaluations and, yes, even good simulators, and a much different picture emerges. It had startlingly good vertical performance - especially for an early-war US fighter - and while it wasn't terribly fast, it could turn quite well and rolled even better.

I received another shock while playing IL-2 online and trying some "what-if" matchups with friends, such as a Wildcat against a Bf-109E or F. It turns out the Wildcat was an *incredible* turner. It had the misfortune of going up against one of the few fighters on earth that could turn even better than it could, so this aspect of its maneuverability has been forgotten by history.

The margins of victory are slim - at least in air combat maneuvering - so small differences often end up exaggerated. That's because air combat is all about winning position; whether you win by an inch or a mile makes no difference, you're still going home with all the marbles. Thus relatively small performance differences end up rather exaggerated, especially in popular history. The truth, however, is that engineers the world over tend to know what the fuck they're doing, and even the most-maligned machines were far better than they're given credit for.

Now considering the above - and that ground combat is nothing like air combat - and that the Abrams is the product of the most technologically advanced and sophisticated military-industrial complex on the planet - and I can safely conclude that your friend is full of shit. Even experts hesitate to make blanket statements like that, given how much of the tech is currently classified. If he takes exception to this, invite him to write up his points in a pastebin and post it at me - I'm curious to see one of these guys in thew wild as opposed to just shitposting on /k/.
