Post something good ✨

usmanjunaid44808’s Profile PhotoUsman
Тoday in the sociology class our teacher took a black notebook, picked it up and told us “this notebook is red”, Myl everyone was like “no”, and he repeated “yes it is red”, we answered him “yes no, it’s not true” when he turned the notebook to the other side, which was indeed red, then explained "don't tell anyone that they are wrong until you look at the situation from their point of view"
which impressed me very much.

So I majored in sociology back in college, but I am thinking of going back for my masters. I am thinking of going back psychology this time do you think this would be a good idea? I just need opinions

What made you start thinking about going back? Do you actually enjoy psychology? Do you have an idea about what you want to do after your masters or are you seeing how things go?

I’ve taken sociology and psychology! Yes I think taking psychology would be a good idea, it’s very interesting and fun to learn about😁

,,Where did we left off?''

,,Alright. Due to the fact that my shift begins in approximately five minutes and 34 seconds I’ll make this very quick. As you probably now my name is Dr. Spencer Reid and I work for the Behavioral Analysis Unit here in Quantico, Virginia. My earliest child memories are about my mother reading me the earliest Valentine’s poems, which includes Chaucer’s Parlement of Foules. The veriety of books she read to me played an important role in my vast basic knowledge in many areas. I have an IQ of 187, giving me the title of a genius amongst peers and others. An eidetic memory and the possibility of reading 20,000 words per minute are also among my special skills. I’m an expert on historical serial killers, statistics, geographic profiling, graphology, and body language. My PhDs are in Mathematics, Chemistry and Engineering and I have Bas in Psychology, Sociology and, because I got bored, I’ll soon have a BA in Philosophy. Is there more to say? You said basic information, which is why I’m confused and undecided. Well, my mother says I’m so skinny because I drink too much cofee, which reminds me I have to get one before I get into the building. I hope I could help you with your vague task.’’
,,Thank you very much, Dr. Reid. If our viewers want to know more about you they simply have to get to know you themselves.’’
,,Wait.. Did she say viewers? And who wants to get to know me?’’

No lol. That is called a personality. It's not a real science because it's a matter of opinion how you label yourself. Unless you're transgender or androgynous you're female. If you don't feel like one, you just have a different personality. No need to invent a label for that.

gender identity isn't correlated with personality. additionally, the study of gender *is* a science congruent to disciplines such as sociology and cultural anthropology. genders other than man and woman have been evident for centuries.
non-binary is a trans identity, because i am not my assigned gender at birth. also, the idea of androgyny has nothing to do with gender either -- androgyny is a physical expression of oneself through things like hair, makeup, clothing, etc etc.
the idea of trans identities hasn't been "invented," and it certainly is not a contemporary subject. it's simply talked about more now because it's become safer and more acceptable for people to come out as trans.

What/whom inspired you to leave Islam? I think you might’ve been asked this Q before but I’m really lazy now and I don’t want to scroll down to find the answer😅🤭

Elizabeth2018x’s Profile Photododo
Yes, I've answered this a few times before. Briefly, I started reading books critiquing the spurious nature of the Hadith collection. Then I read Nietzsche and Bertrand Russell, together with books on psychology, anthropology and sociology of religion, and it became clearer to me that there is no "divine source" for any religion. They are all just human constructs.
I saw the unequal treatment of women in Islamic theory, and practice, added to that, the fact that Islamic teachings don't fit in with modern values of freedom, liberty, and equality.

Do you have any favourite philosophers now? Favourite probs isn't the right word, but ones you thought were on the money.

There's not much controversy to this, really. The further back you go, the more you exclusively hear voices chosen for their ideological value. Socrates' life trajectory & lifestyle are basically identical to that of Jesus Christ, & they weren't too far apart chronologically. Neither wrote anything; they were teachers, whose lessons were recorded by others. By Plato, in Socrates' case. Some Socrates trivia for you teens, impress your teachers with that shit. Or just google "Socrates" & read for like, 25 seconds. Fucking $20000 degree lmao. Anyway.
Was Socrates "on the money?" I'll say his: his thought was the "origin story" of western rationalism. That's science, that's maths, that's democracy, logic, all of it. Like a lot of rationalists & also like Jesus, he was a very pious dude, tho ultimately history paints him less as a prophet & more a critic; the first rationalist.
Is any of that "true?" Fuck no, but that's not the point. It's about who's USEFUL, & to who'm, & why. That kind of thinking is your critical theory tradition, & is happening NOW - the exact opposite end of history to Socrates. Recent big names you should be familiar with: Derrida, Foucault, Deleuze & Guattari, probably Habermas I guess. My more obscure interests are Hans Jonas, Axel Honneth (not an obscure figure, very influential thinker), & Jean-Philippe Deranty, who I had the privilege of learning from one-on-one for a bit. Philosophy of work.
Maybe obscure to non-Americans but a worthy mention for on-the-money-ness: Alexis de Tocqueville. Early critic of the United States back when it was a shiny new slave colony, & painfully prescient.
There are lots of live, boring arguments now over ethics, language, death, even the nature of matter, but imo the real shit is social philosophy. As you'd expect it's closer to sociology & cultural studies than traditional philosophy-crossovers, main one being science, but linguistics was huge for ages, & psychology has always been a hotbed of philosophical implications.
I could go on & on, but really there's only one name you need to remember. Haters won't like it, but the REAL nerds from across the ideological spectrum will immediately recognise: Karl Marx. If you want "on the money," Marx did it metaphorically, theoretically, AND literally. He wrote the definitive critique of capitalism - which is no mean feat at all, just on its own. Many ppl alive NOW fully believe that capitalism is just...a perfect economic metaphor for the natural state of man. It's just REAL.
No. It's just shit some rich ppl made up, Marx figured it out & detailed its strengths & flaws pretty accurately like 150 years ago. Das Kapital. Check it out. As in google it, DO NOT try to read it. It is horrible & very esoteric & translated from Ye Olde Russian. It still, somehow, still POPS tho.
Lot of dumb bullshit in the history of philosophy, but Marx' works are still absolutely foundational. We would not have economics without Karl Marx.

why people can't accept this reality that a girl can smoke. i'm a girl and i started smoking recently. I went up to the smoking area of my university to have a puff, and i was fined, FINED for smoking in the smoking area. Why because i'm a girl.??

haha i understand. you know i actually did a research on smoking back in my Alevels sociology class along with my group partners. it also included peoples reactions to girls/women smoking. and can i just add.... even the upper class isn't as "modern" and "broad-minded" as they seem.

my major has nothing to do with the whole idea! but the fact that U DONT JUDGE BY RELIGION I would never believe! maybe in the case of a friendship and maybe for while in a case of a lover. but not for a lifetime Im a sociology student by the way

Friendship or love it doesn't matter.. I never judge anyone by religion. However, when you live in such a society, it will definitely force you to. But i'm talking about me.. I simply don't give a damn as long as i'm treated the way i should be.
And you dont have to believe me, but you can't just show up and call me a liar when you never had a live conversation with me or even met me face to face.

I already got the answer for this myself. I would like to know what are your thoughts about it. Are we or are we not prisoners of what we are taught to be the norms in the society? If your answer is yes, how do you think one can break from it?

akciMMicka’s Profile Photo⚜️ خديجة ⚜️
This is a very complex question to answer. But I'll just say a little about what I think. First of all, calling this a prison is pretty complicated. See how life is in Venezuela and North Korea. The life in society in these countries cited have much more difficult norms to feel free within them. We here in Brazil have a much greater freedom than in the countries I have mentioned. However, this does not happen when comparing Brazil and the USA. For example, it is very difficult to start a business and employ people if I want to develop myself as an entrepreneur here because it is a country full of unnecessary bureaucracy and with enough obstacles for any entrepreneur that does not exist in the USA. Here the state tries to grow much and average of everything. They say we have the right to vote. But we are forced to vote. Then come the question: how can this be a right, if I am obliged? It does not strike me as such a free society. But if we speak of demoracria, we can admit that we have much more freedom in democracy than in a dictatorship or a monarchy. However, we could also say that democracy is dictated by 50% + 1. Still, I have the freedom to express my opinion without being dead or dead, even having to admit of corruption that occurs without having the power to change, since the great Most people in Brazil do not care about studying politics, history, geopolitics, philosophy and sociology with the depth necessary to avoid falling into the corrupt promises that we have to admit in power. Even though I do not have enough power and freedom to change all that, I can very well live my life, earn my money, express my opinions (as I am doing now) without the worry of being tortured, imprisoned or killed for that alone. Henry David Thoreau said in one of his works that in a world of injustice, it is only natural that the place of the righteous be in prison. Just as Gandhi stated, when he was in prison, that there were free people in prison and people arrested at the "freedom" of coming and going on the streets. That this is a matter of conscience. And yes, in that sense I agree with both. Freedom is not just a point to do whatever we want. But if what we do will affect the life of another or other people in an unfair, negative way to the point of being cruel. Which is unacceptable. So to live in what we call "society" you have to have limits to not harm another person and other people should have limits to not harm yours. Since we are not all capable of doing this without imposition, we need these social norms, of course I am talking about the laws, for examples to be given and we can create a society with the clear message: if you do not behave civilized in a society called civilized, will be punished and used as an example to the others. Not wanting to go too far talking about Discipline and Punish, in which Foucault describes how these examples were implacable and cruel before and how they have changed until today.

If you were to have a blog, what would you blog about and why? - And if you do have one, tell me how and why you started it? (Post a link to it if you want.)

ImmortalTorture’s Profile PhotoBANƎ
I used to blog for a bit back in the day, and all I did was complain about things (I had a short stint where I would rewrite mythology using my own narration, that was fun but I'm not as creative anymore). I mean, I pretty much had no friends so that was the next best thing. Blogging for me was means to an end, I had a need for an emotional outlet to write down my thoughts, paired with an urge to create things and have output. College changed that up, I was writing all day every day and it became work instead of leisure, also maybe my mental health improved and I had no need to write, my defense mechanisms no longer a need to kick in which led to me becoming less funny over time. Nowadays I only write when I feel particularly inspired or emotional, I would have days of motivation but I would use that motivation to write productive stuff like project descriptions on my Behance, scripts for future projects, or discussion of more serious topics. I actually want to start writing on Medium to launch my Sociology career and score points with Grad school admissions. So yeah, you can find my blog in my bio, probably.

qu. #7 - who is/was your most memorable teacher or professor? what was it about them that made them memorable?

poetalunam’s Profile Photoleigh;
My sociology teacher who was many a thing. A closeted Marxist, a social gadfly, an observer, a dreamer, and his mind, oh god his mind is unlike anything I've ever come across. I'm in awe of that man's mind.
Here's a letter I wrote to him a year ago to thank him for all he'd done for me and his reply by email, which I didn't at all expect. He's not one to show much emotion. I look back on it from time to time. I hope you get a glimpse of how great the man is through this small interaction.
"Dear Mr …,
Firstly, I’d like to apologise for my being perpetually absent from your lessons in my last year. I did however, still enjoy them. My being absent was never a reflection of your excellent teaching standards – though I think and hope you already knew that.
Mark Twain famously said, “don’t let schooling interfere with your education” and I really do feel like you developed my education a great deal. You taught us all far beyond the curriculum and I feel as if you’ve helped students coming from disadvantaged backgrounds get a far better education than they could have ever bargained for. So thank you for all you’ve done. I for one, deeply appreciate it.
I’d also like to take this opportunity to say I think that you’re probably the best teacher I’ve come across during my time in education. I do not say that lightly. I have come across some awful but also equally brilliant teachers, but you take the lead in being brilliant, by far. Your teaching style has been something else altogether.
I know at the start of these two years, there was a lot of laughter from the class, we didn’t quite grasp where you were coming from, but over the course of this time with you, we’ve been stirred into life. I know I have. Sir, you’ve opened my eyes to the notion that things aren’t how they should be. Someday when I make a change in the world, no matter how small, it will boil down to the moments where you inspired me in class (or during those lengthy discussions I used to have with you – I loved them so much I’d go home and frantically write down all your ideas so I could reflect on them from time to time. I’m going to miss all of this an unbelievable amount.)
Thank you for all that you have done for me. I will never forget it or you.
All the best,
Habiba"

what logic is behind the belief that "reverse racism isn't real." i hear this a lot on social media and don't understand how racism can only be perpetrated by someone in a higher social position (or however you'd like to define it).

sscabss’s Profile Photoscabs
I don't get this either .. the dictionary definition of racism is to hate another race, so thats pretty straightforward to understand. The sociology definition however, confuses things by explaining racism as 'privilege and power.'.. and white people are said to have both. For example: when white people commit crimes their sentences and punishments are less than those of people of color who committed the same crime..
So basically .. from my very limited understanding, reverse racism is the argument that white people have a desire to prove that people of colour are not the only ones that are put at a disadvantage or targeted because of their race.
The reason they say 'reverse racism doesn't exist' is because a repressed group apparently cannot be racist towards those in a dominant group… They can be prejudice but not racist apparently.

I just heard about the New York college tuition thing today! We learned about it in my Sociology class. My professor wasn't happy with it, though. He's fairly conservative and constantly rants about how "everyone wants things for free" and that there's "hidden costs".

i'm sure there will still be hidden costs but i'm happy they're finally taking the steps to more affordable education for low income and middle class families. they're recognizing that college should be a right, not a privilege. i just wish they implemented this 9 years ago. ?
