When’s the last time you did something for the first time?

inktomy_pen_’s Profile Photopeanut
An excellent question. I am almost too embarrassed to answer it because I haven't learned any new skill or attempted anything new for a long time. Most probably it is due to laziness and the fact that objects like myself tend to remain at rest until an opposing force causes it to move.
I started to learn how to play a chromatic harmonica a few months ago. Let me say this, the older you are, the more difficult it is to acquire new skills. It's damn frustrating. And I still have a banjo sitting there waiting for me to attempt to learn a few simple songs to amuse myself. Of course I don't expect to ever perform live with either instrument, but I am more curious to see if I even have the capacity to learn a new instrument at my age. I already play Bass and Guitar and understand functional piano, but those instruments I learned at a young age and now I simply pick them up and play, but the harmonica and banjo are like different universes to me.
Not a great answer, but a truthful one none the less. Learning a new instrument is tough!
Thanks for the question.

Do you think the questions on here will get nicer or at least more creative in the new year?

dragonstorm86’s Profile PhotoKristin with an I
Extremely unlikely.
To receive thoughtful questions, you need to develop healthy relationships/friendships on askfm. This effort can take months, years or never. To be honest, most of the questions I receive are written by myself to myself. This might sound odd to some folks but, 99% of the shoutouts or anonymous questions are poorly written and are not worth answering. So... if I want to improve my writing skills, challenge myself and acquire knowledge, I am forced to answer my own questions.
Here is an example: I like playing Chess, but most people I know refuse to play chess. What should I do? Stop playing Chess or play against myself? So I play by myself. The same thing applies to most of my hobbies i.e. golf, music, etc. One final thought, I have played guitar since I was 10 years old and since that time most of my practicing and playing is accomplished alone. If I waited for other muscians to practice with me and learn songs, I would still be performing like a 10 year old without any skill or proficiency. In short, I learned many years ago that if you want to achieve success, do not depend upon other people, and this appiles to guitar, math, reading, golf or creating thoughtful questions and posting those questions onto askfm so I can improve my writing skills while also informing and entertaining my followers. /Alex

How do you celebrate Christmas where you live? Do you have any regional foods, traditions etc.? 🎄🎁

TobbeAsks’s Profile PhotoTobbe
“Christmas Tradition” by Alex
Our Christmas traditions have changed over the years as loved ones have passed away and friends have moved. This year we will be spending Christmas in Miami (Little Cuba) with our oldest son and his family. Since our son recently moved his family to Miami from Los Angeles, I am not certain how Christmas will unfold this year; but, I do know that my sons mother-in-law and sister-in-law will also be visiting and spending the holiday with us. And… the day after Christmas my son, my daughter and I, will be playing a round of golf which is something that I enjoy because it is a common interest that brings us closer together and creates lasting memories.
In the past, we would celebrate Christmas at our home and would invite guests who were alone and had no place to go on Christmas day. We would also invite exchange students from the "Players School of Music" located in Clearwater Florida, into our home to enjoy a home cooked Christmas dinner. And after dinner we would take out our musical instruments and play some Christmas songs with guitars, piano, bass and tenor sax.
When we lived on Bow Lake in Strafford New Hampshire, we would sing in the Choir and then go cross country skiing around the lake on snowmobile trails. We would also visit North Conway where we would go skiing and then stop by the inn to enjoy a hot chocolate and conversations with the locals. I guess you could say that our Christmas tradition is a work in progress that continues to evolve. I must admit that I thoroughly enjoy Christmas because I never know what to expect. However, it does seem that the days where my wife and I organize and prepare the Christmas meal and festivities are slowly coming to an end. This saddens me because we enjoyed hosting the Christmas day celebration, but I also recognize that change is inevitable and it creates new opportunities to experience new food, new traditions and to meet new people.
❤️ Merry Christmas.❤️

TobbeAsks’s Profile PhotoTobbe
In China ppl don't celebrate it as majority is either atheists or Buddhists (and very few Muslims).
In Ukraine due to government decision we celebrate it 25th of December and 7th of January (caused by different calendars used by Catholics and Orthodox churches).
Ppl (mainly kids) normally sing songs called 'kolyadka' and 'schedrivka' and visit homes of other ppl. If they visit you give them smth sweet. The moat famous schedrivka is...Carol of the Bells, originally written by Ukrainian composer Leontovych based on that Ukrainian folk song. Song was translated and adapted to EN when composer immigrated.
Other than that, we spend time with families or go to church

What’s your favorite song?

I have many favorite songs.
- And So It Goes by Billy Joel is a great song.
- Bridge Over Troubled Water by Paul Simon
- You've Got A Friend by Carole King
- The Shadow Of Your Smile performed by Frank Sinatra
- Open Arms by Steve Perry and Journey
- Hotel California by The Eagles
I guess I don't have one favorite song. There are too many great songs with wonderful lyrics and enchanting melodies and harmonies.

Welches Lied hast du zuletzt gehört?

Ich hatte heute viele Lieder der 70er,80er, 90er und aktuelle Songs angehört 😅 Einfach mal Lust bekommen alles durcheinander anzuhören. 😎👍

What gets you into the Christmas spirit? 🎅🎄

TobbeAsks’s Profile PhotoTobbe
I can't really say that I've been feeling very christmassssy past 3 or 4 years.
But it actually consists of the little things - going gift shopping, meanwhile enjoying the mall decorations. Having a christmas tree, decorating it. Watching christmas movies, listening to christmas songs. Basically, just preparing for christmas and decorating because it's the best part.
Christmas itself passes so quickly.
What gets you into the Christmas spirit

Do you listen to foreign music? A friend of mine introduced me to this Japanese pop-punk band from the 2000s and although I don't understand jacksh*t in japanese, I enjoy it greatly lmao. It’s the sound that caught my ear

Yep :) mainly Japanese music too lol
I love Babymetal lol. As well as other JPop songs, more traditional Japanese music, etc.
Then I also really like Oonagh, her music is like a total opposite :)

Mir tuckert schon seit heute morgen dieses Lied durch den Kopf...........*Conclusion: nothing beats the songs of this era*

Out of the four seasons, what’s your favorite one?

MarnieDavage’s Profile Photo✿ Marniee ✿
Always and forever spring!
Our world starts to wake up again! What was a very chromatic landscape bursts with vitality! Blossoms appear in trees, birds return with their songs, flowers give little eruptions of colour! Baby animals can be seen or heard :3
It's just amazing to me!

Yeah, I remember every commercial I heard in my childhood with a melody. They are german, so they won't probably ring a bell if I tell you which one. But generally, I have a good memory for songs XD Even if they are annoying.

When you listen to a song for the first time, would you say it’s mostly the beat or the lyrics that dictate how much you enjoy it? Or do they have equal significance to you? Does it change depending on the genre of music you’re listening to? 🎧🎶

anonamouse89887’s Profile Photoanonamouse
I can evoke certain images or recreate memories by listening to songs. I'd say it depends on whether the song helps me to feel certain emotions and evoke images that I wanna see for me to be able to enjoy it. I don't really mind the lyrics the first time but I would eventually look it up even if it's in a foreign language. The beat/genre/musical technicalities, I don't really mind so much as I listen to a wide variety of music.

That's very different I believe.
I stick to songs because of their melody, the interprets voice or the lyrics. But I also listen to music with language that I don't fully understand, in those cases, I just depend on the vibe of the song. I don't really care about the genre, If I feel what the artist sings about and am able to understand it through my own experiences then I am just going to love that song. :)

I hope this doesn't sound like a dumb question, but if I listen to old songs and memories associated with said song come into my mind, and I start reviving them in my head, am I nostalgic? is that what nostalgia is?

Yes but more so if they’re making you feel sentimental or a longing for that time period. Emotions like that.
I hope this doesnt sound like a dumb question but if I listen to old songs and

Is it ok to pretend to be in love? What would be the purpose?

Why would anyone do something as dastardly as pretending to be in love? There are two obvious reasons that come to mind:
1. Money and power - typically the victim, in this case, is wealthy and well connected. The abuser manipulates, deceives and pretends to gain access to that wealth and power.
2. Sex - the perpetrator will say anything, including: "I love you" to gain access to the "forbidden fruit."
Everytime I contemplate this topic of the "pretender" it reminds me of one of my all time favorite songs i.e.
Jackson Browne - The Pretender, NY, June 9, 1996

Is there a song that you've discovered recently and instantly fell in love with it? I discovered this song by spotify's recommendation called "not so bad in LA" by Allie X and it's now part of my everyday's songs on repeat playlist and it's rare that I discover a song nowadays that gets to my heart.

I came across this in my inbox again because I deleted the old answer sometime last week. Since then there has been yet another song that I’ve fallen in love with. There is something about it that… I don’t even know. It’s gives me a profound sense of peace and love. I cannot even describe. It’s like a lullaby.
