Given your preference for a shorter and leaner Toonami that's closer to 3 hours. What was the line of thinking that lead to Toonami airing 5 hours of premiere episodes for a while in 2019? That was quite generous IMO and I'm still surprised you guys pulled that off.

That was just a confluence of a lot of opportunities to get shows coming our way at the same time. To a large degree, scheduling is sort of like directing a river. Sometimes you just have more shows available than you planned for, and sometimes, you can make room and spend the money to have them. And often to make up for that, you have to contract the schedule later to save some time and money for the next time the river starts overflowing!

Hola bro n.n/

Apparently some people think you guys majorly "sold out" by letting a company sponsor a TOM speech. I'm curious what your response to them would be. I really don't see the harm in it. Not like I imagine it's going to be a regular thing etc.

HeartofSword75’s Profile PhotoDuelist
I mean, Toonami runs on as money. We have to make it. So by that POV we “sold out” a long time ago. I know the LoL folks are genuine, longtime Toonami fans and thought it would be cool, and we decided why not give it a try? Doesn’t mean it will be a regular thing. Either way, it helps keep the lights on. Toonami is fan forward, but it’s a business, not a charity.

Wasted my eyeballs on this video, so I thought let you do the same thing: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5BmPcb2Wzxs You've been quoted in it, and I have to ask, you're still married to a 2021 end date of Toonami or does the future extend beyond that in the post-Crunchyroll world?

nemalki’s Profile PhotoJeff Harris
I’m not married to any end date for Toonami. And I think Crunchyroll and Toonami being a part of the same company could be a good thing for everyone!
Only someone who’s very short sighted wouldn’t see the opportunity there.
WE know a lot about bringing anime to a wide audience, and they know a lot about serving a hardcore fan base. Seems like there’s a Venn diagram in there somewhere that might be beneficial! We’ll see.

You say Toonami has plans through 2021? With the ratings your getting nowadays, without DBZ, Mike Lazzo would have long pulled the plug on you guys. Face it, DeMarco, Netflix, Hulu, and Crunchyroll are running you out of business and we don't need an irrelevant programming block anymore.

Lol you know Crunchyroll and Toonami are now owned by the same company right? 😘

You've been called a taste-maker for music because of your work with the Adult Swim Singles program, but to what extent do you think toonami has influenced the success of certain shows in America?

Ethan
I think Toonami is a big reason Dragon Ball is so huge in the US. And Naruto. And a reason shows like Gundam, FLCL, Bebop, etc are as well known as they are in the West. Whenever Toonami does finally come to an end (again), I’ll walk away knowing our work had a real and lasting impact on making anime in the states much more mainstream.

Hey Jason, as a 15 year old who used to like Toonami (but doesn't anymore), I believe it was wrong of you to refuse to tell anyone who Swayzak and Sara 2 were voiced by, because I'm actually interested. I pitched up Swayzak and I'm trying to recognize the voice; I wanna say it's Tom Kenny?

Lol if you’re telling me you don’t even like Toonami anymore, I’m not sure why that’s supposed to motivate me to care about your quandary? 🤔

If you can answer, I’m honestly curious if you are legitimately happier that the new Thundercats is what it is instead of maybe a 2nd season of TCats ‘11 which many have desired for a while (as potentially impossible as that may have been to make if it was written off). I know it did well on Toonami

The ‘11 Thundercats was great but it never performed beyond “okay.” The reason it’s gone is because it was not embraced by its intended audience- kids. That’s the math of tv and it’s something older animation fans sometimes have a hard time understanding.
This new TCats looks aimed directly at kids, which is smart. So yeah, I’m happy. The art style looks great- anyone who is trying to compare it to Steven Universe, or Ok GO, etc, in terms of line work and design does not have the critical faculties to even discuss the look of the show, frankly.
The people at Studio Yotta are wildly talented, they clearly care about what made Thundercats fun and special and want to put their own spin on it while honoring that. And the existence of this show doesn’t prevent anyone from rewatching the original or the ‘11 versions, does it?👌🏼

Toonami was really innovative when it first came out, not so much now. Any plans to continue innovating with the product?

First, show me another TV block that airs new, unusual anime alongside great hits and classics, plays music videos, experimental animated shorts, uses cutting edge, unknown artists for music, and makes original CGI adventures for the hosts, and game reviews, PLUS does stuff like our April Fools stunt, and produces original series on top of all of that. Then I might agree we aren’t still innovating!

dude honestly man, toonami could not be more f*cking stupid to air FLCL behind the Dragon Ball hour, like that is an ADSM original, NEW original at that lol like they really WILL NOT let Dragon Ball go.

I could see reason in airing it behind Super but Kai? Nah. Kai even ends two weeks before FLCL Progressive does so that’s not a good plan IF that is the plan. Let’s not assume the plan is to put it behind the DB hour before there’s a full schedule released.

Netflix is producing 7 anime series for next year. You're producing 1. Ready to pack it in yet or what?

I'm trying to understand why you'd bother doing this and why you think Netflix is our main concern. You're a strange person. No plans to pack it in any time soon, although I'm sure Toonami will end one day. It's ended before! I wish Netflix luck, because anyone that's willing to PAY creators of anime deserves respect. There's not enough people doing that.

Con la supuesta llegada de pokemon sol y luna a Disney XD es momento que CN apueste a otra franquicia

themetalmilitia’s Profile PhotoMETAL MILITIA

What ended up swaying the team's opinion to do the TOM 4 we wound up with vs the more adult concept art (from a few tweets back)? Had Toonami history not played out the way it did was the idea to move in that direction? The block's packaging production has always been super fascinating to me.

Hm that was ultimately Sean Akins' decision. He felt that rather than TOM continuing to get "older," we should reset the block and maintain its kid friendliness. That's why he focused on TOM 4.

I think we can safely say that given the cost and the block's ratings, that Toonami is doing great. Why do you think no other network has even made an attempt to run anime? I love Toonami, but I'd also like to see other channels run anime since you guys can't run it all.

I promise you the main reason is that most people who work in TV are not anime fans. Secondly, so many have tried and failed at airing anime that it doesn't make a lot of sense from a business perspective. Third, it's a ton of work to bring anime over here and get it right, and frankly, people are lazy.

Aren't you even a little upset with Toonami's dumb decisions?? They're looking at only what the fans want and nothing else, and honestly, other than One-Punch Man, the shows they're getting aren't doing so hot. It's even worse considering they only have 1 new show that isn't a long runner.

Sure, I don't like everything they do. Like anyone else I am more bias to some choices than others. I think five long running series is excessive for a block that's only working with 7 slots and hoping that's down to 4 if they don't see an expansion next year. I don't think everything they've aired this year or will likely air next year is worth while personally but I'm not the only one watching.
I can't say I fault them for trusting fan demand as much as they do but sometimes people only think they know what they want (myself included) and there is no absolute consensus for what people want to see so lesser known shows are inevitably going to be drowned out by the requests of the more popular ones. Given that I'm kinda of surprised Mob Psycho 100 is currently the most requested show. From what I'm told of Mob it's not exactly the kind of show that you would expect to see on Toonami but pedigree certainly counts for a lot, as it has with Watanabe's Space Dandy and Oshii's Sand Whale and Me. I like when Toonami fans think outside the box and suggest shows that aren't run of the mill battle shounen.
As a side note, Gundam: IBO is something I'm a bit torn on because I very badly wanted to see Gundam air on US television again and admittedly it hasn't bombed so it wasn't such a bad idea to air that one regardless of my luke warm opinion of the series. Likewise while Dimension W was lacking IMO it didn't do badly for Toonami at all so it wasn't a bad call to air that either.
I'm moderately frustrated that Hunter x Hunter isn't airing earlier in the line-up but I'm mostly just glad it's airing at all.
Everything is doing well compared to the rest of cable. Not the best they've done but nowhere near the worst so there's no sense using the ratings as indication that Toonami has been dropping the ball this year. Whose to say how well other shows might be doing in those slots? You can't really base it on how Toonami was doing in 2015 because all of Adult Swim was doing better then and like it or not the bar gets set by the performance of the comedy airing before Toonami. If that comedy isn't doing as well as it did in prior months then even Dragon Ball Z isn't going to do as well as it can.
While I still say 5 is excessive. I see the reasoning behind filling the majority of the block with long running series. Anime fans prefer a revolving door of fresh shows but the general audience prefers consistency. It is my limited understanding that long running series are easier to budget for than a frequently changing line-up. It takes a long time to select shows and long series are usually more cost effective than short series. If a short series is a hit they only get maybe one reairing out of those 10-13 episodes and have to hope the next show holds the audience. I do think they'll find room for more finite series in 2017 though.
It's easy criticize them anonymously but how do you suppose they should select shows and make other programming decisions?

I really don't want to be "that guy" but why is Toonami broadcasting a Gundam marathon during Halloween weekend and not One Piece since its in an arc with a Halloween like atmosphere

No I am sadly not carving a jack-o-lantern this year, but I do get to check out Salem and all of their pumpkin art! Hoping to see one with a Kelsey Grammer silhouette. Good luck with yours!

I get really annoyed when people ( Toonami faithful ) tell people they understand ratings better then anyone yet they don't work with TV, what do you say to people like that ?

I ignore them. Because I promise, if a person doesn't work in the industry and talks about ratings, they're just guess with less than half of the information. I do this for a living, not a hobby. 👍🏼

It sounds like the same people have been working on Toonami year in and year out. Have you guys ever thought of getting a new fresh perspective? How do you guys plan to keep the product fresh aside from adding new shows?

We work with new people all the time. And so far, at least according to ratings and feedback, we haven't had a problem keeping things fresh. We pick up new viewers all the time, and lose old ones who get tired of Toonami or age out etc. We're gonna keep doing what we're doing. Anyone who thinks they can do better is welcome to try, I'd really be into seeing that!

How come there is no serious adult animation in the US? I know there was Spawn and Maxx, but that was in the 90's. Most of the adult animation in the US are comedies. How come the US does not have many serious adult animation compare to Japan. Where's American's answer to Ninja Scroll or Akira?

MichaelPhipps839’s Profile PhotoMichael Phipps
It's too expensive to produce animation in the US, generally, so much of the work of animating moved offshore. Also, there is a tradition of serious animation in Japan, and in the US, animation has always been viewed as either a medium for children, or something that can be funny but never serious or insightful. It's just a cultural difference, one that may change one day (and hopefully Toonami is a part of that change), but it hasn't changed much, so far.

How would you describe the evolution of Toonami alongside its audience added almost 20 years? Have they grown together- or is it largely divisive? Little of both?

Little of both I think! The great thing is we have almost 20 years of history together. The bad thing is some people left us behind in a certain era and want us frozen there. It's a constant push and pull, really. I find it fascinating.

When Toonami ran 6-6.5hours was it a strain on time and resources to update the bumps for 12-13 shows? Is packaging the block with 7 shows comparatively easier or pretty much the same? Would you say the length of Toonami now has allowed you more time to work on short-form content like Intruder 2/3?

Sketch1984’s Profile PhotoSketch
It definitely took more effort, but not as much more as you might think. The thing that has allowed us to work on more original short form content is definitely more money, rather than more time. We have no more time, we just make it work.
