Refind

Tenéis algún tip para aprender algún idioma?//Do you have any advice for learning a language?😊😋

Yes! Start with the basics. Like toddler basics and slowly build your way up from there!
Don’t be afraid to read toddler books in a different language. There are also toddler books that tell the same story in two different languages!
Watch movies and listen to songs and podcasts in other languages to learn to discriminate the sounds and intonation. It’s hard to do as an adult, since our critical language learning skills stop at around the age of 8. After that, we just have to try really really hard to master a language.
Many people that learn a language at a later age often have a big vocabulary in difficult words, but often miss out on the basic words we learn when we are younger.

Do you think the style in which you say things matters? for example even if the message is good, it can come across as bad if you say it in a certain way?

Yes! Of course. That’s pragmatics: what we do with our words, our intentions and goals and the way we interpret sentences.
This is influenced by choice of words and culture. This can be done on purpose or on accident, for example: people that don’t have a big vocabulary in a language, have a bigger chance of creating miscommunication because of ‘choice’ of words.

I had a cranky kid in my class. Never did his homework, never participated in activities that went on in the classroom. Always bullying other kids, stealing their lunch money. One day I was distributing candies among them and I handed him three pieces instead of one. This proved to be some sort of a stimulus because that child started bawling his eyes out. After class, I sat him down, and before I could even inquire about anything he said "Mama left me." It turned out that his father was an alcoholic and used to beat his wife. And judging by how she fled from that cesspool without taking her only child with her, those beatings were outrageous for even a mother to bear. A grandmother who has no strength in her aged bones to stop her son from his dreadful behavior, the best she can do is barely cook meals for a family of now three. Who do you think suffers the most in this conflict between good vs evil? Children. Because they don't have that set of vocabulary to express where or how much something hurts.

Do you think words in a book should be simple to ease access or complicated to improve vocabulary?

unnecessаry advice from me - never start your book. Well, or, in any case, immediately disаble comments. So one day I found out that it was very difficult for most people to understand me and this became my personal problem.
but it shouldn't be.
there are writers who write for one level of readers, and there are those who write for a higher level, that's all. It is up to the reader to choose the right book.

Do you think words in a book should be simple to ease access or complicated to improve vocabulary?

I think both!
A book should be understandable enough for you to learn new words.
Study shows that we need to know 90% of the words in a text to understand the text. If you know 90% of them, the 10% you don’t know will be filled up by context. This way you’re learning new words in a implicit way. 😄
If you don’t know the meaning of the words and context isn’t helping you, you can always use a dictionary! It’s just less fun when you’re reading a story, of course.

How long did it take you to learn to speak English fluently? What methods did you use? What methods were most effective?

About a year once I came to US at 15 yo. Before that I studied it in school, took private English courses, and additional after-school courses. When I came to US I could communicate on a basic level but the expressions I used were not in tune with how people talked. Initially the biggest issue was I couldn't understand people, even on TV. I started reading books and watching sitcoms and because I wanted to follow what the characters were saying it kind of forced me to start understanding it. Once I went to high school the process accelerated even faster.
School. One thing I’ve learnt through my experience is that Russian schools teach students grammar, but really when it comes to using the language - here is a huge black hole. All the people who I contacted with on a topic of learning English, universally say that they are “afraid” to speak in a wrong manner, hence why they tend to not to speak at all. My school gladly had a very passionate director so he set up a lot of english classes based on purely speaking, watching, discussing, arguing and debating. That fact really elevates your level of using the language and overall confidence.
According to some I am still not fluent. Fluency is rather subjective measure. Reading helped the vocabulary, watching TV and movies helped comprehension and pronunciation. Google dictionary with vocalization help is great.
I've been always believing that getting myself sunk in a world full of native speaker could get me become fluent in speaking the language as an adult learner until I read your comment. So in your opinion, it isnt necessary like that? Because I've never experienced it, I've got myself outa my own country but am not living in a native English speaking country, so I couldnt tell. I can see how my English improved by engaging constantly in listening, thinking and speaking English, but am nowhere near the fluent point. Im not a language talent as well. So you dont think submerging in a native speaking world could be significant help, isnt it right?
Living in an English speaking country mainly helps with preserving the desire of learning English since you have no other option but to keep striving to learn the language if you want to do well in general. It keeps you committed and determined. It builds a long term consistency which is very important if you want to become fluent. However, it hasn't helped me a lot in practical terms. Especially when you are nowhere near the level of a native speaker, they won't give you the opportunity to practice English with them since they lose interest pretty quickly. If you don't go past that point where you feel confident conversing in English with them, they are really not much of a help.
Sure it can be done. I have seen it numerous times - even amongst those with little formal education. However it requires a level of commitment that many adults just are not prepared for.

What did her mom do her? If you don’t mind me asking.

So my grandma got polio at the age of 3 and it took over her left arm. Thankfully it was just her left arm and she wasn’t in iron lung. But her mom would take her to the doctors and basically do shock therapy and get the nerves working again. Back then they didn’t have it where we have it today where it’s safe, it was water and electricity and when my grandma couldn’t feel it they would keep turning it up. It was kinda fucked up. But she lived her life with one working arm. ( I say that because she had both arms) we all called her the one arm bandit. But she taught me a lot you can do a lot of things with just one arm, and I still do some of the things to this day, that just make sense. She had kids, grand kids, she would take care of, she drove. She would always say can’t isn’t in our vocabulary, because can’t never did anything. If she could do it we definitely could do it. When I broke my wrist, I learned how to pick salad forks with just one hand. open jars with one hand.

Is it true that the more intelligent you are, the less friends you have?

I can't speak for anyone but myself, and I'm not going to over-generalize.
But I can say that I've met people who were intimidated by my vocabulary, intelligence level, or capacity for thoughtful responses.
I gravitate toward people who display a comparable set of intellectual tools, and who are equally thoughtful.
I refuse to suffer willful ignorance or those who choose to remain uneducated.
So obviously, I have very few friends.

Tita, what's your take on sex on first date? Would I seem too easy if I do it?

This really depends on your attitude about sex. The term "easy" was constructed by men to judge women who like sex, meanwhile men are expected to want sex ASAP, and that's a sign of courage and validity. It also suggests that sex is the goal, and getting it quickly makes a woman undesirable. I suggest removing that from your vocabulary and not associating yourself with people who use it. Personally I want to establish sexual compatibility right away, and there's no point in continuing getting to know someone if there's no chemistry from the start. But some people feel differently and believe chemistry and sexual compatibility can be established later (I disagree). For me, building a life with someone is the goal. It is never easy. I don't want to waste time getting to know someone I'm not sexually compatible with. Figure out what kind of person and woman you are and how you feel about sex. Knowing what you want and when you want it as well as how to protect yourself is not easy. Often it will require you to defend your position. You will have to stand up for yourself and stop talking to people who feel that women are some kind of prize to be attained. 🤮🤮🤮 Decide what kind of woman you want to be and act accordingly. 👌

Can anyone actually carry on a conversation

Unfortunately most of the great writers abandoned askfm between 2016 and 2019 when askfm implemented censorship, reporting, blocking and account suspension. And now askfm consists primarily of cancel culture woke activists who monitor social networks like askfm, instagram, youtube, facebook and twitter and report any text message that "offends" their Marxist ideology and distorted view of the world they inhabit.
And as a consequence most of the the responses are sentences containing 5 words or less and the vocabulary consists of words containing 2 syllables or less. It is one of the reasons that I will eventually disable my account again. The Robert Frost's and Ernest Hemmingway's have departed and abandoned this sinking ship.

What's your honest opinion, am I bad person for not dropping people who use homophobic slurs? considering I am a gay man. I just feel as if it's not that deep anymore, I'm not 16 anymore, I don't ~cancel~ people. They're good ppl overall, just gotta work on their vocabulary.

nah not bad. No one can tell you how to create your connections really, even if they don't agree for their own selves

do what makes you feel most comfortable. obviously it's bad for people to use any kind of slurs, but there's a big difference between using slurs & purposely meaning them in a demeaning manner and then using slurs & not realizing the impact the slur has in a derogatory way. based on this message, i'm assuming your friends are the latter.
we've all done problematic things in our lives. the best thing we can do is learn and grow from what we have learned. you can talk to your friends about how what they're doing is offensive/a slur, but that doesn't mean you *have* to drop them. that's entirely your call.

German native, English fluent (daily conversations) - plus a bit of Russian, 2 years in school, mostly basics; Korean, good basics with a lack of vocabulary (and still missing some grammar like adjectives); Mandarin, 4 months of casual learning, more basics left than I thought it would, as I just found out while watching a Chinese series. xD
It could be more, it could be better, but I'm satisfied right now. I'm able to read 4 different alphabets fluently and to understand basic conversations. It makes me able to connect in a very unique way and I'm enjoying the improvements I make without putting pressure onto me.

The vocabulary of the government and how to pay taxes or ask for certain legal needs etc.
The words often used on official sites are way too difficult for average people let alone people with an intelligence or language skill below average. I think lots of confusion can be avoided if we spend more time getting ready for these things.

Does common sense exist anymore?

"Common Sense" by Nico
1. We ALL have the right to Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.
2. We ALL have the right to eat, breathe, drink clean water and to live our lives in peace.
3. We ALL have the right to equal opportunity and justice under the law.
4. We DO NOT have the right to force other people to accept our lifestyle, our behaviors, our thoughts, what we write or what we speak or what we think.
We are ALL different and we need to respect and celebrate our differences and our uniqueness, and not waste time passing nonsensical legislation or indoctrinating our children in order to force people to "like us" or to "accept us!"
If you DO NOT like me... or
DO NOT accept me... or
DO NOT like what I write... or
DO NOT like what I say... or
DO NOT like what I do...
I DO NOT GIVE A DAMN!
I promise that if you leave me alone, I will also leave you alone.
I promise that if you do not offend me, I will not offend you.
I promise that if you do not hurt me, I will not hurt you.
I promise that if you do not lie, cheat or steal, I will not lie, cheat or steal.
In the old days, we called this Common Sense, which is a concept that is unfortunately missing from the vocabulary of too many cultural Marxists and progressive left woke social activists.
Sadly... Common Sense, is NOT too Common anymore.
