Which Japanese novel ( not light novel) should I read? Please don't recommend anything too dark! Thank you!

Anything by Haruki Murakami is a good start and easily available in English. His most famous novels are The Wind-up Bird Chronicle and Kafka on the Shore.
I also recommend Kazuo Ishiguro's writing, particularly The Remains of That Day and When We Were Orphans.
If you want to delve into literary fiction, you should read Kokoro by Natsume Souseki.
