I think it's possible but it would require a lot of trust and dedication. It's certainly not easy, especially when you can't see the other person and you don't know what they're possibly doing on the other side. It's easier of course if both parties have money to visit each other. It's not so bad if they live a state or two away, they can drive to see each other, but it might cost a bit in gas.
Point is, I do believe in it. It's certainly not easy but it can be a thing if both parties are committed to one another and put the effort in to visit each other in person.
