When will you have the preseason rankings ready for Division 1?

Our Preseason Power 25 Rankings are in the works. We typically start counting them down leading up to opening day starting in early March, so keep an eye out. Who's your preseason favorite?

I'm signing my Sophmore up for the Madison preseason ID, do you follow the players after their high school season ends... American Legion, club, fall ball, etc.

Yes. We try to keep tabs on players all year round. We go to high school games, summer and fall tournaments scouting players and keeping up with their progress.

Will the Southern Open affect 2017 rankings?

Of course. All of our events usually impact our state rankings as well as high school games, tournaments and whatever else we see throughout the year. I would look for 2017 rankings to be updated sometime early next week.

Attending college is a huge cost for today's student athlete. Knowing that D3 colleges can't offer athletic scholarships what do D3's in WI typically offer financially when competing to get the best student athletes for their baseball program? Can athletes expect some help in paying for school?

Great question and its the biggest reason why players' academics are so important. We address this topic before every showcase we hold to stress the importance of academics, the better your academics the more doors that will open for you at the next level. Not only at D3 programs is this relevant but also at the D1 level. Programs are able to package academic scholarships to student athletes with the proper grades and test scores to make more attractive offers.

When will the rankings for the Class of 2017 be updated?

Soon. We just finished our 2016 rankings in Wisconsin and you will soon see the overall 2016 rankings get a make over. Look for sometime next week to see some updated 2017 rankings in Wisconsin.

If a person participated last year in PBR Preseason but not this year, how do you rank them against kids in their class that have better numbers this year than they had last year?

Rankings aren't all about numbers. We follow players all spring, summer and fall and try to watch as many baseball games as possible. We take into consideration several factors that aren't included in just the numbers - projection, actions, performance, etc. are all considered in the rankings.

Why don't you have madison west on that list? They have huge performers in Rock Cates, Simon-Rosenblum Larson, Cam Porter, and Tommy Hill? Explain

Madison West should have a good team this year. Playing in one of the toughest conferences in the state they will be battle tested and have a dominant No. 1 on the mound. We previewed them earlier in the year but just short of making the Preseason Power 25. http://www.prepbaseballreport.com/wisconsin/2015SpringTeamRankings

Really think you guys are underestimating Stevens Point. We all know about the talent lost from last year, but why do you think it will be a tough postseason?? What factors do you know that will make it a tough run from a team you have no research on?

SPASH lost two of the best arms in the state in Shulfer and Giese who combined for 18 of the 26 SPASH wins and over 110 innings pitched. There's not many, if any, programs in the state that can replace two arms of that caliber who carried that much workload. SPASH is still one of our top 25 at No. 18 but on paper do not appear to have the same talent level as the 2014 Sectional Champs.

how do you think kimberly is going to be this year with absence of schreiber? any standouts, or people to look for?

Kimberly came in at No. 12 so we obviously think highly of them. They are always a fundamentally sound program and will be prepared to play. Losing Schreiber to graduation is obviously a huge loss and the team will most likely rely more on team defense and speed this year.

What's the Wisconsin Valley looking like for the upcoming season?

Stevens Point is the only team in that conference to make our Preseason Power 25 and I suspect it to be a down year for the Panthers. They have lost a lot last year and could be a challenge for them to make a return trip to Appleton.

Surprise team(s) from FVA conference?

Surprise? Well Hortonville made the switch to the FVA so they will be new to the schedule this year but outside of them, Kimberly, Oshkosh North and Appleton West, I don't see anyone else contesting for the conference title.

What's to expect from the Eastern Valley Conference this year? Xavier, Waupaca, and Freedom?

I like Freedom in that conference. They have a bulk of returners and are senior heavy as well as making a deep run last year in the playoffs. They snuck into our Preseason Power 25 Rankings on those three factors alone. Waupaca will be tough to beat, at least every time Popham (7-1, 1.99) takes the mound, coming off a good year as a soph. http://www.prepbaseballreport.com/wisconsin/2015SpringTeamRankings

Have you heard news about the 2019 class from hitters, a lot to look for from xavior Watson , Paul toets and Jordan Gomez

We typically do not start bearing down on recruiting classes until they hit high school so we haven't got into the 2019 class yet.

Who do you think are some 2016's and 2015's in Wisconsin that have a chance to get drafted Out of highschool?

Well with the Super 60 is coming up this Sunday, 5 of the top draft considerations in the state will be in attendance. Pete Schuler, Bryant Jordan, Doran Turchin, Ty Ramirez and Owen Miller. Ask me again on Monday as this weekend should bring a lot of insight into the draft landscape of Wisconsin. Too early to say on 2016's but Gavin Lux is probably the front runner.

Son has RHP as his primary pos and 3rd base as his sec pos.He was recently ranked in Wi at a descent spot.He says that he may prefer to play 3rd as primary spot.If he changes the primary pos as 3rd base, we are wondering how that will affect this future rankings. What criteria is used at PBR events?

Player rankings don't change by whatever position he lists in his profile. There are a lot of players that list themselves at positions that they most likely will not play at the next level. We take everything into consideration when ranking players and yes, certain positions have a higher value and if all other factors are in line could be ranked higher. For example, left-handed pitching, its a rare commodity and highly coveted at the next level so all things being equal, a LHP that matches up similarly with a RHP might get the nod over that RHP.

About how fast should a 2018 pitchers velocity be to be a "top prospect"

Well we've seen several 2018's in the PBR coverage area that have topped the 80 mph mark, which is a strong arm for a freshman. But its not all about arm strength alone. Obviously arm strength helps and a freshman that is already topping 80 mph would probably be considered a "top prospect".

When ranking a middle infielder, what things do you look for the most?

There are a lot of factors to determine but for the typical profile of a shortstop most of the time you would evaluate his five tools prioritized in this order: 1. Defense 2. Speed 3. Arm Strength 4. Hitting 5. Power. Its very difficult to find a true shortstop, one that can defensively stick at the position at the next level. More often than not you see the best player on a high school team playing shortstop, but most of the time at the next level you will see that player moved to a position that better suits his abilities.
