I have been doing paid advertising (SEM) to drive traffic to my website. Although it's effective, the cost is extremely high. What's your advice?

Wow, you have a huge budget? ;) I'd be curious how much you spend and whats your ROI.
Go laterally. Have your SEM going still, but explore alternatives if cost is extremely high.

# Write a description META Tag
# Include your keywords in header/paragraph/body
# Promote your biz on social media - i have seen businesses making 5 figures, 6 figures with just social media.

Hi, is it better to outsource for products or design your own product and manufacture it? I am thinking of selling fashion appareals btw.

This depends on your finances and your business goal.
Which track would you choose?
Saturday Club has their factory, the owner is a designer, he picks and chooses the fabric, draws the designs, then put it online. (last i heard, they crossed 1 mil)
Ministry of Retail does sourcing (not sure if they have factory now) but the last time I spoke to her, theirs was travel, source and bring into Singapore. (the last i heard, they are making 5 figures, to 6 figures a month)
Dressabella, owner has his own designs, he then work with fashion designers from lasalle (aka sources), has his own factories, and eventually bringing the expansion into indonesia. ;) (the last i heard, they millions already)

What type of facebook giveaways and contest is suitable for a business selling products? Any examples? ^^

Consideration:
# relevancy to your business
# is it "enticing" enough for people to jump on it
# timeframe that the contest/giveaway is being held
Let's look at softwares:
#fb - they have the "Claim the offer" coupon which you can use
#heyo - its monthly fee, i have tried it and liked it. didn't continue with it because i found another software to run it for me
#rafflecopter - i have been using this for the longest time, then stopped when i found an alternative.
#king sumo - http://youarepossible.academy/giveaways/more-clients-more-money-2015/ - this is the platform that i am using now. its more suitable for my business

Hi Genecia, I have been selling fashion apparels online for quite some time. Low product differentiation and stiff competition have always been a problem for me. Is there any way to win this game?

Create your blue ocean strategy.
Where is your target market? Qoo10? Reebonz? Zalora? Luxola? What kind of customers are you targeting? At what price point are you selling at? What are your distribution channels?
# targeting: relook at it
# price point: if you're competing in the low price, then do you have everyday edge? like dressabella 100 new designs every 30 mins, in your case, every 30 mins you have new designs?
# distribution channels: have you considered extending your reach into carosell, qoo10 for example? So that besides your store front, you have additional distribution channels to gain traction let people know you and then bring them to your store front.
How much are you looking to earn?
I know saturday club is doing very well. they source for their own factory do their own design and do their own styles.
I know ministry of retail is doing very well, but she was "here" long time ago and she differentiates with new designs etc.
I know tracy einny looong time ago since 2006, and they've a reputation. ;)
So if you are not sourcing your own factory, unfortunately, its kinda tough in this fashion apparels market, dear.
To win it, you have to have your source. ;)

Besides FB marketing, what other strategies do you recommend in getting new customers? We are operating on a low budget as we are just starting out.

low budget strategy: build relationship, use the principle of sowing and reaping.
Strategy: "follow, like, comment" and rinse and repeat.
Platforms:
# instagram
# linkedin - go build credibility as a business owner
# facebook - run giveaways, contest, post regularly on your facebook page
# website - must be ready with the systems e.g. shopify

Hello. You mentioned that FB marketing is effective in acquiring customers? How much do you spend on each campaign per month? And what's the results like?

FB campaign has a few key areas:
# targeting
# budget spending
# duration of ads running
# season when you're running your ads e.g. is it christmas, CNY?
i recommend $3 to $5 per day to begin with, however, your variable will be your "targeting" and "duration of ads running"
Typical campaign, i will plan for 3 months, however, i clock in 7 days to let the ads run in first, and by then, i would have already also done my spilt testing in terms of images and text. Of those converting well, i'd keep them, of those not converting well, i'd off them.
Think of fb ads like stocks. when you spend money on ads, spend it as though your life savings is on it.

Hello! If my business is still a startup, how can I attract people to my store? As we have quality and afforable range of products however, not enough people and coming and buying from us. I know this as there is another shop that sell the same stuffs however more expensive and people still buy.

This is an awesome Q!
This is what alot of people are facing in their business. have a product/service to sell, but has not enough people buying?
#1 not targeting the right consumers: your ideal client avatar is not correct, so therefore there's little results
#2 your "attraction phase" is not visible enough. people are not compelled to buy from you because your "sweetness" or "icing" or "product traces" are not attractive enough, visibly.
Solution:
#1 relook at your target market, sell to everybody sell to nobody, speak to one, speak to many
#2 relook at your "freebie" what are you baiting people to come in to be your subscribers or raving fans?
#3 relook at your "ads" if you're doing, to bring people to you.

What do you think is the best strategy to market an online business?

There is no best strategy because it depends which fits your company's overall marketing strategy and whether your business is product/service plus where's your target market hanging out.
I teach alot using facebook to "fish" for leads, and have brought in 1 million dollars sales with just using fb ads. Just remember this: sell to everybody sell to nobody, speak to one, speak to many.

How do you get funding for your first business?

I know that people look for business to invest in because of profitability ie. your numbers. your Profit & Loss statements and the potential in the business to be scalable and are they able to sell off after.
For my first business, i literally have no funds to begin with because I came from a poor family, and had to support myself through school. After deciding that entrepreneurship is my path, I worked hard, saved money, put together my first 1000 to start my training/coaching business.

Hi, I am curious on what drives you to become an entrepreneur?

Hi! thanks for your question.
Q1 what makes you jump out of bed?
helping women to make money, be independent, have freedom of choices, do what they love
Q2 what makes you not feel like its work?
just teach and share and teach and share and see results "cha-ching!" in the lady's bank account with their online business.
Q3 whats "fuels me"?

How do I sustain my business longer in online store ?

You must look at your cost. In business, its buy low sell high. And my friend, it really depends on your type of business, what products/programs/services you are selling.
Sell to everybody sell to nobody, speak to one, speak to many.

Do you make decisions spontaneously or chart out a plan first?

Oh, that depends is it a major decisions or minor decision. If you have fear around making decisions, then i suggest tapping using EFT method, where you can think about the decision first then tap it out until there is a shift in your "energy" before making the decision.
In business, i recommend looking at cost, pros and cons, and potential opportunities. Like last year we did FLA, franchise licensing asia, because we own COFFEE:NOWHERE, so we needed to put in place a trade show to attract people, however, we don't know "how many people" will actually buy, or come to the trade show, etc. So is it a go ahead or not go ahead?
We look at our cost, the pros and cons, then the potential opportunities.

Hi Genecia, how do you promote and sustain your businesses? Any tips to share?

Hi! I have a cake strategy. Think of a rainbow cake, 1st layer is your attraction layer. what do you have to attract people to you? it could be the freebie, the giveaway, the contest that you are giving to get more subscribers to you. 2nd layer is your products/services/programs thats for sale - it could have open/close registrations, or simply evergreen products. This is the layer where your process and systems are ready to "sell" to your people - in the promotion side, its important. This is because if you're able to attract people to you but without engagement, or "sustainable" ecosystem in your business, people will go away. The 3rd layer of the cake is called the icing on the cake, where "FLIP" you could use facebook linkedin instagram pinterest etc to help you to have the marketing strategies to get it going. And build credibility. 4th is the cherry on your cake. thats where your storefront is at.
to sustain, its your budgeting, day to day costing, month to month overheads. business = buy low sell high.

hi XiaXue, is it tough to source for supplier? Do you only have one supplier for your store?

It's not tough if you have a passion for whatever you are sourcing for!! We don't just have one supplier, we source from Korea and also from various indie baby brands such as whistle n flute or mini dressy.

If we have abit of marketing budget, what's the best way to channel our money to get the most traffic?

This is a difficult question to answer because different products have to be marketed differently. For fashion, you can try sponsoring fashion bloggers or advertising on trendy magazines? But for example if you want to sell an app to predict stock prices, maybe social media advertising isn't the way to go as the crowd tends to be younger and more frivolous. You can try advertising on the financial times? for the most part though, I think online advertising can get you the most bang for your buck, but beware of agencies that can buy fake followers or inflate stats to cheat money.

How do you get the idea of opening a store?

Mike and I wanted to set up a baby store and together we have the marketing, logistics and web stuff down but we didn't know about sourcing or merchandising or finance. Our partners approached us and we found it was a great marriage so we started a store together!

Hi Xiaxue, if I am starting a blog on my Shopify store selling fashion, any tips on what topics I can start blogging on, in an engaging and non-boring way?

just a suggestion... How about a fashion police sort of blog? People like to read bitchy stuff. LOL!! Or something like http://www.thesartorialist.com/ but for local fashion?

What's are some of the factors you consider when deciding on the pricing of the baby clothes?

Of course, first to set a brand image. Is it an expensive or economical brand? For Baby Style Icon, our clothes are pretty reasonably priced so the average person can afford it. Then we source for products that match the price range and sell it at what we think people will pay for. After the product is sold, we can then judge if the price is too high or too low based on sales and adjust the next pricing accordingly.

Hi Xiaxue. Very inspired by your success. I would like to know if I were to engage the blogger platform as a marketing tool, how effective is that? How many popular bloggers should I engage? Besides that, is it more advisable to manufacture our own products or source overseas?

Since bloggers range from popular to not (and some pretending to be), I think the answer varies. If you have the budget to, you should definitely try more bloggers. As for the second question... I can't answer that because we haven't manufactured our own products yet.

Hi Xiaxue! You are obviously very successful with your blog and with engaging your followers on the social media. Any tips on building follower base on social media organically?

Like I mentioned before, you can try to sponsor influencers or do giveaways. But at the end of the day, it's good content that attracts people to follow you on social media. Try posting cute tumblr type images on instagram, even if it's just a cheesy quote with a sunrise picture as the background. People seem to like hipster style photos. You can also try to make creative or funny videos. For facebook, you can try to get people to share sponsored posts by creating viral content. For example, if you sell chocolate, you can have the title "20 ways chocolate can make your sex life delicious". That's something that people will be interested to click. For personal accounts, I will also advise you to take off your clothes because that's the fastest and most sensational way to get attention hahaha!! But I don't think it works for business accounts unless you sell lingerie.
