What is up with you and brOla?

We've been friends for a while now and collaborated and performed together at times. What do you want to know?

What is in Your opinion the best of the best 2x12 cabinet, and why? Thanks.

That's usually dependent of context and purpose. I've had great results with both Zilla and Hesu cabs loaded with either a pair of V30's or 1 V30 and 1 K100.

So Fred, what age did you start playing guitar and how long did you practice to get so good?

Started when I was 16, and as long as the drive is there, you get better. I never looked at training new stuff as a chore and I never faced one of those "grueling practice sessions" many a player goes on about as the simple joy of better expressing myself and being able to play things I couldn't before led to keep at it for hours on end - sometimes more than 11 hours of a single day! :)

If you had any advice to give to an inspiring musician, what would it be? Thanks.

I have loads of them, but it all boils down to dedication, being a nice, straight up person and not only learning how to play but also how to listen. Rest is down to everything business related, such as making yourself known, networking and the like and always remember that music owes us nothing - it's our task to create value in what we do!

Word is that you joined the Dark Side and ordained as Lord Sith, was it because of the cookies?

Evidently - ask yourself this: how many times did Yoda, Skywalker, Windu and all those tunic bearing hippies give cookies to their apprentices?
Join the Dark Side - we have cookies. All of them.

You hold your Beard in great reverence, like it bestows to you great powers like Samson's hair. Hypothetically speaking, if someone shaved half of it off (say you drank too much and ended up unconscious) would you shave the other half off or just leave it and wait for it to grow back in? :)

Hahahahahaha! I'd have to shave lest I ended up looking utterly ridiculous - thing is that my beard grows so fast it would be fine in a week anyway. :)

When you're recording at home you are recording through the microphone or directly to the interface and use amp simulators in software ?

Depends. I even use real amps straight to the interface other than mic'd up when I want to use cab impulses instead, and I'll use both my mic'd amps and stuff like the Kemper and Axe FX these days, in the most hectic combinations you can imagine!

What amp do you currently use?

Varies depending on what I want, to be honest, but the regulars are the Laney Ironheart and Randall Diavlo.

Hello Fred, I wonder, have you ever tried a fretless guitar?

I did, albeit very briefly - fun instruments for sure, with a wealth of expressive possibilities!

have you ever attended uni? if yes, what did you study?

Yes. I studied Veterinary Medicine, believe it or not!

Holy s.... 40 guitars?!? I only have 1

Remember, man - at one point I had but one guitar myself. I also sucked at guitar horribly for a while, etc.. Everything is a function of time, priorities and dedication (which will, except for the wealthiest out there, include sacrifices).

What was your first guitar?

Yamaha RGX112P - H-S-S superstrat type with a crappy vintage trem that got replaced with an Ibanez Edge. The guitar was converted to an H-H configuration and I still own it, minus the electronics and pickguard, which has been framed after Steve Vai signed it. :)

FRED I FUCKING LOVE YOU. If you remember me from the live streams ;D My question is how many guitars do you have out at any one point?

SinsAscendant’s Profile PhotoIcarus Lives ☪
Varies immensely, so I'll answer based on my own typical workflow on my own stuff - I tend to have 3 to 4 guitars out, which I know will work well with one another and cover a fair bit of ground tonally.

How long did it take you to get fluent at sweeping?

Passable, not too long (i.e. not slacking or raking notes too hard), maybe a couple months tops, but applying the kind of phrasing I like to it did mature over time as did the phrasing itself, so it's a bit hard to give you an actual timeframe.

Your tunes are influenced from electronic and/or dance music among others. Any suggestions of groups and artists from these styles? :)

Honestly, old computer and console games were such a part of my childhood and teen years that the whole thing became second nature to me - really dug old Commodore Amiga game tracks, for example! Bands-wise, Depeche Mode, New Order, that kind of stuff, is something I've always loved!

Advice for learning how to sweep?

Patience. Loads of it - start with VERY simple patterns your left hand is familiar with so that you can focus on the workings of the right hand, and always use a metronome to keep stuff in time and consistent. Do not increase the speed if you aren't playing an exercise clean and consistently - that'll do the trick.

How many songs or albums do you have available to purchases?

I have only one album out at the moment, called Atonement. My second album Transcendence will be out towards the end of the year. :)

Thanks for the reply man! I'm doubting between a Techtron drop pick or a UHMWPE drop pick. Have you tried one of these? How is the attack of those picks + do they change anything of your sound?

haven't tested Techtron yet, to be honest - it's a rare material and usually customers will swarm Patrick the moment he announces its availability! These picks do change attack, yes, and there is a clear difference in the attack between materials, from PHD to UHMWPE to others composites Patrick has used in spite of the same shape.
