How hard is it to balance a champion based on the tug-of-war between its strengths in the hands of an average player VS in the hands of a talented pro player. Does the relationship between players like Faker and champions like Azir give you guys a real headache?
Very, very difficult. The win rate for champs like Azir make it almost impossible for a single set of numbers to make them not 100% pick-ban in pro but still viable below pro.
We have the most luck with champions that have a low skill floor but a high skill ceiling. This means anyone can play them, but the pros can just play them that much better. Azir has a high skill floor and a very high skill ceiling, while Warwick has a low skill floor and a skill ceiling just above that.
A second category of champs are those that really only shine in a premade and struggle in solo queue. Those are harder to tune, because League is ultimately a team game and we do want to recognize outstanding team coordination.
