Both subtitles (bottom of the screen) and supertitles (top of the screen) are a thing, but what about left-titles and right-titles? Why don't we ever see those? Should 3D movies be subbed with front-titles and/or back-titles?

you haven't been watching that many fansubs if you've never seen left-titles or right-titles

How much of current fansubbing style orthodoxy can be attributed to the actions and preferences of specific people, and how much can be attributed to the overall tastes of the crowd? I.e. great man theory vs. the other theory.

largely the former i'd say
like a lot of the techniques and standards we still follow in typesetting are there because unanimated did it that way and taught lots of other typesetters to do it that way
very little of what we do comes from the audience because in all honesty most of the feedback we receive is not very helpful

If I'm trying to learn Japanese by playing moege, do you think I should pick one that has an English translation or one that doesn't?

doesn't, imo
no existing translation is a good motivator and if there's one lying around you will probably slow yourself down by checking it constantly (which often doesn't even help since you can't be sure it's reliable)
that said if there's one you really want to read, don't let the existence of a translation stop you

Is it possible for a translator to TLC his or her own script?

well i mean they can double check it, sure
calling it TLC might be misleading since that usually implies a second person has looked at it

What's a common English word that is uncommonly used in Japanese-to-English things? Does this reflect a flaw in the translation process?

i'm sure there are tons, though it's hard to think of examples because you naturally think of the words that get used a lot, not the ones that get used rarely
sure
