I think I just made a newb gamer mistake... I haven't played a computer game since the first Max Payne and recently got into Neverwinter Online because I used to love D&D. So I went to Best Buy and bought an ASUS G20-B09 ... and it is not impressing me at all, choppy game-play at sub optimal setting

Are you talking about this system? http://www.forbes.com/sites/jasonevangelho/2014/12/04/asus-republic-of-gamers-g20-compact-pc-review/
I had a great experience with it, so I'm wondering if the problem is related to Neverwinter Online. Let me know if we're talking about the same model, because I was able to get smooth 60fps+ gameplay running high and ultra settings at 1080p.

can i use A10 7850k instead of Sapphire Radeon R7 260X and Intel G3258 ?

You can, but the 260x will deliver far better graphics performance than the A10 7850K. You'll have to compromise using AMD's APU, but it WILL deliver 1080p gaming...albeit with a lot less bells and whistles turned on. If you do choose an APU, beef up your RAM (make sure you're using dual channel) and get the fastest speed possible.

Hi Jason, looking to build your mini-ITX, but with a dual output graphics card to manage 2 screens. Its to run Elite sim. Any suggestions?

Hey there! I have a couple mini-ITX builds in the wild so I'm not positive which one you're referring to, but any modern card can handle dual monitor output. My question back to you (before I can adequately answer this) is are you planning to use both monitors for gaming, or is this simply a standard "1 for gaming, 1 for multitasking" setup?
Any modern graphics card from Nvidia or AMD can handle dual outputs (normally at least 3), so it becomes a question of budget and brand loyalty. For Nvidia: If you want rock solid 1080p gaming, the GTX 960 will deliver high to ultra graphics quality at 60fps on most modern games. My favorite 960 is the Asus STRIX model — you can read my review here.
If your target is 1440p, the GTX 970 is for you, although it may not deliver high to ultra quality settings for all games at 1440p (such as the Witcher 3), but it will do great with Elite. In the Nvidia stable, it’s by far the card offering the most performance for the dollar. The GTX 980 will let you max out all your eye candy and it’ll also let you dip your toes into medium quality 4K gaming.
For AMD, I would actually recommend holding off until more reviews of the new 300 series hit the web. And if you can wait a couple months, the Radeon Fury Nano will be on the market. . .

Hey Jason! Do you think this is a good rig for VR? Thoughts? https://www.cyberpowerpc.com/system/Gamer_Infinity_8000 Thanks a million man!

Hey man, sorry for the delayed response! I think it's beyond good! That's one hell of a future-proofed X99 rig, and the Titan X ensures you won't run out of VRAM for the foreseeable future (in VR or in 4K). Yep, it's got my stamp of approval. You can't even build this yourself for much less.

Hello Jason. I read a few of your articles on Forbes and I find it crazy that AMD is lagging so far behind. I know that Nvidia is a huge company, but so is AMD. Unless Nvidia is playing dirty and paying off game developers I think that AMD needs to up their game to keep it competitive.

I think AMD's larger battle is not one of building exciting products, but actually one of messaging, marketing, and PR. A company as large as AMD is a tricky machine to manage, and there's so many moving parts there. One thing I truly believe based on what I know about their upcoming 300 series GPUs is that they WILL take back some of that desktop marketshare from Nvidia. But in order to maximize that, they need to be more aggressive in their developer relations, update their drivers more frequently, and continue to build their community outreach.

Is DX12 releasing with Windows 10 or is it going to be shortly after? I've looked everywhere and can't seem to find a for sure answer

To the best of my knowledge, DX12 will ship with Windows 10. In fact a beta implementation of it was used in my DX12/3DMark feature test article (http://www.forbes.com/sites/jasonevangelho/2015/03/26/directx-12-delivers-amd-nvidia-and-intel-hardware-tested-with-awesome-improvements/). The real question is when we will see it widely implemented in games? I expect to see a few solid titles by year's end, with a heavy influx of DX12-optimized games by early to mid 2016.

Do you know how accurate the wattage ratings are for build lists on PCPartPicker.com? Are they averages, idle load, max...?

Michael Barrs
My understanding -- backed up by some testing -- is that the wattage requirements are based on maximum load.

Im thinking of upgrading my 970 to a 980 ti. My plan is to get it soon and use it with my current 1080 144hz monitor then maybe upgrade to a 1440 monitor in December. Do you think it will still perform greatly on 1440p in December for a long time? Or do you think its worth it for just the 1080 144hz

The 980 Ti is *just* shy of Titan X performance. To put it simply, it would be overkill for just a 1080p panel. You can basically max out virtually any game at 1440p with it.

will this config run all current games? Kingston HyperX DDR3 8 GB (2 x 4 GB) PC SDRAM 1600mhz Hard Disk WD- Blue WD10EZEX 1 TB Internal Hard Drive. Power Supply- Cooler Master Thunder 500 Watts PSU. Processor-AMD 4 GHz AM3+ FX-4300 FX-Series Four-Core Edition. Graphics Card-Nvidia GTX 750Ti

Yes it will, but the question is how well will it run them, and for how long into the future? I'd definitely recommend upgrading your CPU to an FX-6300 or FX-8320 and your GPU to a GTX 960.

WOW. This is honestly a surprise to me. I haven't tested APUs in about a year or so. They've come quite a long way which is what I always hoped! I *do* still maintain that you get more bang for your buck when buying a dedicated GPU, but this is beyond decent.

Would you suggest buying an APU like A10 7850k or a cheap CPU + base GPU if I am looking for running latest games at low settings(low resolution as well) and am on a tight budget? if you prefer the APU can you tell me the minimum RAM requirements as apu performance depends on the RAM as well?

Remember that the best investment you can make in a system, toward better graphics performance, is the GPU. It's what you should spend the most money on. Something like this $400 system I built -- even though it has a weak CPU -- still turns in substantially better graphics performance. Medium to high at 1080p:

I plan on buying a rig with the following specs: AMD 4 GHz FM2+ A-Series APU A10-7850K Processor G.Skill TridentX DDR3 8 GB(2 x 4 GB)RAM (F3-2400C10D-8GTX) Corsair VS550 550 Watt PSU Biostar A58ML Motherboard can i expect it to run latest titles like GTA V on low/moderate settings?

I'm not even sure GTA V will run, however.

this are the specs of a rig i plan on buying: AMD 4 GHz FM2+ A-Series Accelerated Processor Unit A10-7850K Processor Biostar A58ML Motherboard G.Skill TridentX DDR3 8 GB (2 x 4 GB) PC RAM (F3-2400C10D-8GTX) Corsair VS550 550 Watt PSU and a 1 TB HD will the latest titles run on low settings?

They SHOULD run at the lowest setting at 1080p. Or you could bump down the resolution just a bit and increase the graphical fidelity.

Do you think I should upgrade to the new AMD 300 series from my gtx 970 evga FTW edition? My motherboard doesn't allow sli, but allows crossfire. I'm playing on 1080p.

Without knowing hard specs about the 300 series (except HBM) -- and without knowing which 300 series card you're talking about, it's unfortunately an impossible question to answer. Especially with regards to the 300 series' thermals.

http://ask.fm/TheGameTechnician/answer/127667415596 so you mean i should play it on higher resolution and settings? I didnt get what you mean. Im kinda a big fan that is willing to make a custom mgs5 pc lol

What I meant was this: I'm sure the i3 and 960 will run the game on PC at 1080p/60fps, but without official requirements being posted -- and without actual hands on -- we won't know how high we can turn up the graphics settings and still achieve 1080p/60fps.

I like your mini-ITX $800 build. This one I want to build but with an i7. Would it run an i7 the way it is or do you recommend other changes like a different motherboard?

No issues sticking a Core i7 in there, provided of course it's not a 5960x :D
If you want to overclock it, however, you'll need a Z97 motherboard which supports overclocking. And a low-profile 3rd party CPU cooler. Do you NEED to overclock? Nope, sink that effort into your GPU.

I love the idea of a mini itx build but want a little more oomph than your $400 build, what can I do to make a little belter of a machine for around double the price? First time builder but keen to have something beautiful

I'm selecting this as my next School of Tech question at Forbes. Watch for an answer at http://forbes.com/sites/jasonevangelho. Thanks for the question!

Hey I tweeted this earlier, but is there a MSI 970 motherboard in blue or an equivalent?

The only one I'm aware of is the older MSI 970A-G46 AM3 motherboard -- it's black with blue trim.

Hey I'm running a r9 290 and more of my games runs decent/amazing on 1080p (amd driver issues get in the way sometimes) but im looking to invest on a card that runs at 4k pretty efficiently (50 -60fps) on my sony 4ktv should i just wait for next year gen cards from Amd/Nvidia and see what they offer

The Radeon 295x2 is your answer for that desired framerate at 4K in current generation cards, but knowing that AMD has HBM (High Bandwidth Memory) in the pipeline for their 300 series flagship cards, I would DEFINITELY wait for the official specs/announcement before pulling the trigger. Even if they aren't much more powerful than something like the 295x2, HBM allows for smaller form factors.

http://www.game-debate.com/games/index.php?g_id=7313&game=Metal%20Gear%20Solid%20V:%20The%20Phantom%20Pain i want to run this game in 1080p and 60fps (thats what the ps4 is going to "run") first i went with the gtx960 and i3-4130 but the unoficial req. are higher , should i wait for official specs

Personally, I think an i3 and GTX 960 should easily run The Phantom Pain at 1080p/60, but here's why it's worth waiting for official specs: HOW GOOD WILL IT LOOK running at 1080p/60?
