Ask @TEPopka

What is the weirdest scar you have and how did you get it?

It's hard to see, but I have a dent in my left shin from jumping out of the way of a car and hitting my leg on a rock.

What would you do if an elephant were charging at you?

what would you do if you contracted Ebola
what would you do if a wizard turned you into coal
what would you do if you lost all your money in a frivolous lawsuit

Who is your favorite fictional character?

5-way tie, 3/5 are anime, 4/5 are animated.
Haruko Haruhara: Because FLCL is a show where everyone is trying to make sense of the world, but can't because they can't make other people fit into the roles they want them to fill, and Haruko is the only character who can see this happening and deliberately pretends to fill those roles. She somehow manages to be a villain that challenges the way every other character sees the world, even though some of those characters are pretty different from each other.
Doremi Harukaze: The single most lovable character I can think of. A lot of the show's gags are at her expense; she's an easy target because it seems like her desires are so simple - steak, Battle Rangers, vague notion of love, etc. But she can't look at an unhappy person without wanting to help them. It's just in her nature to see the best in everyone, except people who are actively and outwardly mean-spirited, and she doesn't want to see that go to waste. And she does have greater things she wants for herself; she also feels like everyone around her has things more figured out than she does, which I get (a lot of people probably get this). It's hard for her to decide what she thinks is important because she's just a kid, but ultimately this is what helps the show make its point.
Boris Lermontov from The Red Shoes: He glorifies the artist's craft while desperately trying to assert himself as an artist. We know so little about him that it's hard to say exactly why he does this, but the only thing we know is that he's not doing it for simple self-aggrandizment; he's doing it because he's lonely, and for some reason he simply can't bring himself to trust people normally. He can only trust the bond between artistic collaborators.
Pinocchio from the Disney version: Cool because he embodies the effort to make art that represents life. His behavior is slightly odd throughout the movie; in some ways he acts like a little boy, but not quite. He's very easily influenced by how other people decide to use him. He's made of wood, he's literally a piece of art. The film plays out by trying to give Geppetto the escapist fantasy that Pinocchio embodies.
Kino: Honestly, Kino's the only reason the show is good. Everything would be exaggerated and excessively simplistic without her. But her refusal to comment on the overly simplistic stories stops the show from making any other comment about them. Because of Kino, exaggeration and simplicity become the point; they become an expressive way to show how communities bring people into their fold, and how sometimes another person is so foreign to you that you can barely make sense of what they're trying to say. And Kino still tries to talk to people in spite of that. She doesn't think she can convince anyone to change their mind, and she definitely holds her own opinions about other people's beliefs, but she just appreciates the variety of people in general.

What was your favorite childhood TV show?

It was Digimon but I feel like I should give a non-anime answer too, though I can't remember many other shows I watched. I really liked Tom & Jerry.

Put your music on shuffle, what are the first 3 songs that come on?

Gettysburg by Ratatat, September by Earth, Wind & Fire, and Shadow Stabbing by Cake.

Is there a story behind your profile picture? What is it?

It's Popka. It's the Popka sprite from Klonoa: The Legendary Star Medal.
That's all.

You're stuck on an island. How would you spend your time?

This question is really asking for it.
But it doesn't specify what kind of island, so I'm going to assume the island is Australia and say I'd probably spend my time exactly the same way I do now.

Share something you're grateful for today.

The fact that I never have to watch Jurassic World again.

What countries have you visited?

Assuming "visited" means I did more than just linger at the airport for a while waiting for a transfer, I've been to Japan, Taiwan, Mexico, Italy, Vietnam, Cambodia, Thailand, Honduras, and Spain. The only ones where I spoke the local language were Mexico, Honduras, and Spain, but even then my Spanish isn't that good.

Fake person quote:
"Eating ramen that tastes really bad can be kind of fun too." - Haruko Haruhara, FLCL
Real person quote:
"I’ve never been certain whether the moral of the Icarus story should only be, as is generally accepted, ‘don’t try to fly too high,’ or whether it might also be thought of as ‘forget the wax and feathers, and do a better job on the wings." - Stanley Kubrick

What or who motivates you to get out of bed every morning?

I don't need motivation to get up, I need motivation to go to bed.

Can there be friendship between a man and a woman?

This is the fourth dumbest question I've ever heard.

In three words, how would you describe your best friend?

Eh, I don't really have a best friend. I have friends - people who know and presumably care about me, whom I hang out with, but no one I spend a lot of time with or particularly confide in.

What future invention are you impatiently waiting for?

That thing from Elysium that instantly heals you from any disease or injury. I would have said the glasses from Dennou Coil, but apparently we're already getting those this year.

What's the best prank you've ever played on somebody?

I never have. The closest was when my brother was asking me about the book "A Farewell to Arms." I told him it was about a man who goes off to fight in World War 1 and gets his arms blown off. He believed me.

What is the most popular lie, people tell to each other?

That it's OK to put a comma in the middle of that sentence.

What would animals say to us if they could talk?

They would be too dumb to construct sentences.
OK, I'll play along. They probably would have a lot of demands.

Did you ever fall asleep in school?

I was actually voted most likely to fall asleep in class in my senior year of high school.

Would you rather be rich and famous or poor and happy?

Since the question says "rich and famous" and not "rich and sad," I'd rather be rich and famous.

How did you come up with your username?

In the anime Apocalypse Zero, the enemies are called "Tactical Evils." T.E. stands for Tactical Evil. Popka is a character in the video game Klonoa 2: Lunatea's Veil, which I love.
