As an AFAB/ AMAB trans person, what is it about being male or female that you don't identify with? I'm a cis woman, and I only consider myself female because that's what everyone has always told me I am - there aren't any characteristics/ traits/ other that I would say make me female. Fab campaign:)
Big question! I think being male or female, or not being, is different for everyone and everyone's experience of gender is different - there's no one answer! Personally, as an afab non-binary person, it simply feels wrong for me to be referred to as female - it feels like someone else is being talked about, I don't connect it with myself. I look at myself and see an outer shell that people gender as female, and then see a "self" behind it that to me is so clearly Other, in a way I can't easily explain.
There are no specific characteristics or traits that make someone their gender. Plenty of trans people do feel they don't identify with the "stereotypical" traits of their assigned gender at birth, but others do, whilst still not identifying with that gender! Everyone's narrative is individual, and it's often very difficult to voice.
If you interrogate your gender and feel that the gender you were assigned at birth fails to fully describe you.. welcome to the club ;)
