Do you have any experience with Repetitive Strain Injury from playing guitar? Recently I started to practice some stretchy licks and began to feel some pain and discomfort around the wrist. Any advice you have on that?

My advice would be to take a short break, relax and remember to breath. It it may be the position of your wrists or shoulders. But its all a result of tensing up whilst playing. Make sure you practice slowly, and relaxed. That is the key to mastering things at higher tempos with effortless feeling. There should be very very minimal tension. I would take it easy, if it gets bad see a doctor. Just be careful dude, good luck.

Top 10 instructional guitar vids ? From your point of view ? Thanks !

Of the top of my head, these are ones that have helped me! I wouldn't say these are the best for everyone, they just helped me in many ways. Some of them helped me in the past, some of them I go back to, some of them I am watching now for inspiration and ideas.
Paul Gilbert Intense Rock 1/2
Andy James (everything he has done for technique at Lick LIbrary)
Rusty Cooley Basic Training
Scott Hendersion Rock Fusion
Tom Quayle From Rock to Fusion
Tom Quayle Modern Legato Series
Tom Quayle Melodic Minor (the new one, its amazing!)
Derek Taylor DT3
Ritchie Kotzen Rock Chops
And EVERYTHING that Guthrie Govan does on YouTube.

Does it happen to you Sam ? composing a technical idea, or a super lick, then having it in your bag and willing to incorporate in a song after ? like the reverse composition thing ? i hope you got my question ! thanks !

I try not to base my composition around a technical idea or lick for sake of it. In rare cases the lick into the song approach has inspired ideas, but for me its the other way around. Sound, Rhythm Dynamic, Melody and Structure first. The super licks and technical ideas come from necessity to get an idea that I hear in my head out of my head rather than having a lick and wanting to put it into a song.

Sam, I don't know if it's a weird one or not but can you briefly describe your psychology during playing a solo? like do you focus on what you are playing RIGHT NOW or what parts are coming next and also do you pay more attention on your finger movements or do you solely pay attention to your sound.

I TRY to focus on what I hear and feel when I am improvising.
When I practice I will focus on finger movements, timing, vibrato, all the details. But when I just play I don't want to be thinking about those things. I aim to be able to listen to what I am playing and feel it and from that take it in the direction I want to.
I hope this makes sense!

(1/2) Hi Sam, glad to know that Guthrie's Creative Guitar has influenced you in your playing. I'm a self taught guitarist & I'd like to know how to approach instructional books/programs and implement them in your playing and actually write music. e.g. Suppose if I want to learn Alternate picking...

(here is the 2nd part of your question so people can see) "(2/2).. technique. So, for how long should I practice the exercises from the book, at what tempo and how should I apply the learning when writing songs? I guess this is the biggest problem that has kept me back for 5 years! Thanks a lot for the help!"
The best thing about that book really is the philosophy behind the material rather than the licks themselves. never really learnt the licks from it, I just picked up tips and ideas from it. I just applied them to my own licks and made variations from them. The thing is that if you want to naturally do something, apply it! Apply it by writing and creating ideas, implementing them in to what you do. I never sat down with the book (or any book for that matter) and thought "i am going to work through this from start to finish" because I am A To lazy and B there are other things i want to do.
I will dip into those books if I am wanting some inspiration or to remind myself about a few things for myself or my teaching.
I hope this answer helps :)

which dvds you have bought from tom ? whats your reviews:)

I have:
51 Fusion licks
51 Advanced rock Licks
Rock to Fusion
jam with tq
Modern Legato 1,2,3
and a handful of his other downloads! I just bought his melodic minor one!
My Review is simply 'Buy them, they are fucking great!'

Can you compare and contrast the Illuminator and Juggernaut pickups. I want both of them for fan reasons, but was wondering if one set was better, or if a fusion was a better option like an illuminator neck and a juggernaut bridge, etc...

I haven't tried either pickup's so I am afraid I have no idea! Sorry :/

Hey Sam, the more I watch your videos on Youtube the more I realise your musical skill and depth. I really like your phenomenal playing. Can you tell me how much time do you need on average everyday to completely warm up to a level that you feel like you can play everything you know flawlessly?

First of all thank you for the super kind words. It means a lot that you see me for more than just the metal/8 string stuff I do :) To be honest I cannot play flawlessly, I get good and bad days all of the time. I just make sure that when I start playing everyday that I start slow, bends vibrato, phrases etc. Then I start moving it up slowly until I feel ready to play more demanding ideas. I think by learning something new early on in my guitar playing 'day' I have to force myself to play slowly and connect with the guitar. If I just jump on it rarely goes my way. Basically in a nutshell, I start slow, connect my mind to my guitar then I can move on with what I need to work on.

Hey man, oliver here, how is writing for the new MoJ album going?your instagram teases really got me hyped! How do plan to differ it from Axis?

Its great. About to head to rehearsal now!
Its going to differ HUGELY from Axis. We are stepping into our own direction. Axis was one of the first metal songs I wrote and whilst I do love it, its not me.
Gravity is our most recent single and our new material is going to be of that nature.

Dude hi, can you show us how to octave displacement? Thanks you're amazing player:)

Thanks dude :)
Simply take a scale for example: Major Scale
1 2 3 4 5 6 7 (8) 9(2) 10 (3) 11 (4) 12 (5) 13 (6) etc
Then maybe play the major scale like this:
1. 9. 3. 11. 5. 13
Its something I don't 'think' about when writing or playing. But its definitely a cool idea when you are stuck in a rut or working something out!

Name 5 essential books/sources on music theory that every guitar player needs to own.:)

Here are 5 books that I really love.
The Inner Game of Music - (Forgot the author)
Effortless Mastery - Kenny Werner
Creative Guitar 1+2 - Guthrie Govan
Mastering Rock Guitar - Erik Halbig
And I can't think of the top of my head a 5th book that has made such a huge impact on me. But I am sure there is something!

Is Cracking the code a video from a guy named Troy? The video you recommended

Yes! Its an online series of episodes really looking deep into the mechanics of picking. Really worth checking out, I love it!

Hi Can u tell us more about those arpeggios that you are studying over altered chords?

For example, over a E7#9 chord you could use the E altered scale (from the melodic minor). But there are lots of arpeggio choices that you can get such as using a Dm7b5 arpeggio over that E7#9 chord. It implies some of the tasty sounding notes around the E7#9. First of all figure out all of the arpeggios in a key and mess around with playing them over the different chords from the key. Loads of great sounds to be found!

Any advices on building fast intervallic lines?

Make sure you have a rhythm in mind for the line, use accents in the rhythm to determine which wider intervals stand out etc. Just have fun creating ideas! Tapping, hybrid picking and skipping strings helps a lot to!

Sam, do you play classical guitar too?

Not really. I have some very talented friends that do, and its mind blowing!

How are you buddy?:) what are you working on currently?

I am working on the Paul Gilbert material for the PG DVD.
I am also learning Screaming Blues O'Mania (PG) and Jump Start (Greg Howe) for my own entertainment. I am also picking up various licks from Tom Quayles 51 Advanced Fusion Licks DVD to build a bit more legato vocabulary.
I am working on improvisation, writing funky rock fusion music with changes to jam with friends so my changes playing gets a bit better. I am also working on Melodic Minor/Altered Scales and arpeggio super impositions that I can use over altered chords. Working on my bending and vibrato. And playing around with 2-1-2 pentatonic ideas.
On top of that I have some guest solos I am writing, preparing teaching material for my students and I am quite impulsive. If I hear something that I want to learn (last night I learnt some Pedal Steel bends from a live Guthrie Govan clip) then I will try and grab that also.
Further more I am writing the new Mask of Judas album which we aim to be touring in March next year!

Do you still think that jake is your favourite player ever?

I have many favorites, but there are a few players who I just can't get enough of. Jake is one of them for sure! Super musician and dude :)

Sam I found you few weeks ago and you are already my favourite guitarist :) You are very accurate technically and play lots of intervallic fast stuff. That's all great. But I was wondering if you are into blues rock as well. If so, then please make a blues rock improv video. Thanks.

Thank you dude :) I love blues. I used to have Hendrix/Chuck Berry/BB King recordings around the house when I was young, I learnt a lot from those recordings. I play blues now and then in pub bands and such, here is a short clip of me jamming some blues the other week:

I sound ALOT more convincing on a Strat or 335 style guitar playing the blues, but all my guitars are Ibanez :D

Is there any way one can download/buy your instrumental tracks? (other than the MOJ albums themselves - which are insane too by the way)

Thanks dude :) I don't have anything instrumental uploaded anywhere at the moment apart from YouTube.
I guess you could use a youtube mp3/video download program. :)
I do also have a soundcloud full of rubbish songs:

If you wanted to support what I do, then please support Mask of Judas and buy some of our tracks. Or you can buy video lesson downloads from my website :)
