Because people like to feel like they're doing the right thing in their lives and buying locally grown asparagus is easier than volunteering to help educate inner city youth or joining the peace corps. Plus if you go to the gym a lot you have a really good excuse to wear sexual clothing, and you get complimented on it a lot because the gym is a place where people can compliment you on your body without it being socially unacceptable. Also this question is stupid because all these things have been true and a healthy lifestyle has been trendy since like 1920, it's just that an increasing number of people have had enough leisure time that they actually had to invent more work for themselves to do so its become more popular over time as the middle class became larger.
