So, Spring season is coming to an end, you finally finished SAO (thank god you did) i heard you were gonna watch Kaiba and some other shows, so is there any hope to read that Madoka - Rebelion essay any time soon? onegai Bob-senpai

I am going to try really hard to get a draft of it done this weekend. Might be tough because all these new shows are starting, but we'll see.

do you have any recommendations for post-apocalyptic and dystopian books and/or movies? Separate them by if the work has a positive or negative tone if possible.

A Canticle for Leibowitz, The Handmaid's Tale, Cat's Cradle, The Gone-Away World. Of those, I guess the last is the only one I'd say has an overall positive tone - it's also a lighter/pulpier read in general than the others.

SAO writeup was harsh, didn't you know you had it in ya!

Sometimes I feel I have to be! It'd be less of a headache for me if I stayed soft/neutral with my opinions, but I don't write only to entertain.

What do you think about jrpgs?

I used to really enjoy them, and I still find stuff like Persona really compelling in concept, but my main problem with them is they have a /terrible/ "hours spent to experience gained" ratio. The grinding and repetitive combat devour time like nobody's business, and though I'd love to experience the story part of Persona 4, I can't justify the time spent grinding Ego-Pokemon. But if I had infinite hours, I'd definitely dedicate a few of them to getting back into jrpgs.

Has a discussion with someone about anime ever changed how you viewed a show?

Yeah, many times. Rarely my emotional experience of it, but it often helps me see either specific things I missed that hurt/elevate it or just another framework for viewing it. I feel like there are too many meaningful perspectives you can bring to bear on media for the opinions of others /not/ to regularly change how I see a show.

Have you played any rhythm games? Does the genre even appeal to you?

Does Guitar Hero/Rock Band count? Because I have played an absurd amount of Rock Band. Played it with my sisters, played it with friends at school, played it on break at home. Bought a bunch of albums on it (they have all of London Calling and Doolittle! Ridiculous!), played it on drums and guitars (I got good at it on Guitar Hero II, which still probably has my favorite song selection of any of the traditional Guitar Heroes) and mostly, whenever I can, vocals. I've kind of burned myself out on it now, but for a while that was my preferred way to spend any social gathering.
I also played a bit of DDR a while back, but not enough to be any good at it.

With your SAO 25 piece, I have two questions. Firstly, since you have such a dim view of video games as a whole, why is it that you still partake in the medium? And secondly, do you extend this view of meaninglessness to board games or sports or ineed everything outside fiction and human interaction

I see my position as essentially similar to what people were talking about regarding YA lit a while back - there's some great YA lit out there, but if that's /all/ you consume, you are hobbling yourself. As for why I still play videogames, I'd say it's A. because fun things are fun, and not every one of your experiences has to be a meaningful one, B. because there ARE some great, powerful games out there, and C. because the potential of interactive media is incredibly great and has always fascinated me.

Do you know your blood type? What do you think of the Japanese stereotype associated with it?

Nope and nothing. My blood type is probably a good thing to know, though...

Favorite Mushishi Season 1 episodes?

The rainbow episode, the episode with the woman who writes Mushishi stories down, and the silence in winter episode.

are your band mates also into japanese cartoons?

The guitarist is one of the people I do those screenings of recent classics with, like Kyousogiga and Uchouten Kazoku.

Between Wandering Son and Chihayafuru, which would you be more likely to start/continue watching in the near future?

Wandering Son, definitely. I watched the first few episodes of Chihayafuru and wasn't really grabbed by them a while back - I'll pick it up again at some point, but Wandering Son seems more my kind of thing anyway.

Why hasn't your hatred for mainstream gaming led you into the bosom of indie gaming? It sounds like a lot of people who are looking for developers attempting to expand upon the experiences video games can give us have found a home in indie gaming.

It has, more or less. I play indie games when I find the time, and am strongly looking forward to The Witness. I just don't /have/ that much time, and generally prefer to spend it on stuff that most directly engages with what I care about. Agency is an incredible tool in art though, so I try to find time to try out the highlights.

I don't mean to say that videogames are creating killers, but do you think that there is something to be said about a culture that produces games/movies/media that glorify killing, antiheroes and misogyny that could contribute to these tragedies? Do you think critically looking at media could help?

Yes, definitely. The leap of logic you have to make to completely deny the role videogames play basically requires denying our culture has any effect on us whatsoever, and assuming that we can completely divorce ourselves from the messages our media contains. That's patently ridiculous, and even moreso in the case of videogames, where you can clearly see the feedback loops of gaming's aggressive, sexist, boy's club culture constantly reinforcing themselves in media and in reality. Looking critically at media helps, but you can't turn this stuff off just because you're aware of it, and for every one Elliot Rodger there's one hundred angry young men calling for the death of any woman who dares to say there might be a problem. The culture needs to change.

How did you went from Nicholas to Bobduh?

There's no meaning to the handle - I came up with it in middle school, and mainly just wanted a name I didn't think anyone else would pick. And now of course I'm stuck with B0bduh as my twitter handle because a dead account is camping on the good one :(

Did you enjoy your time with Looking For Alaska? What did you think of its ideas?

Not really. The characters were articulated well enough, but I didn't really feel engaged with them, and basically everything that wasn't plot just pointed at that one central theme of dealing with loss, but I found the resolution of that both too straightforward and unsatisfying. It just felt kinda... insubstantial, I guess?

Wait a second, your most asked question isn't: "HxH writeups please!??"

True, that's also up there.

What would the most interesting thematic thread be in an anime based on your life?

The power of life as an immediate experience versus the catharsis of illustrating an authentic experience in art.
Hopefully?

Looking at mainstream gaming/anime culture, do you believe that the level of ignorance and intolleracne present is the norm, or that its just the idiots who are the loudest?

The idiots /are/ the loudest, but many nerd communities are also kinda predisposed towards ignorance and intolerance, and are also very bad at calling it out.
