hm well first of all, idek if exo will continue to promote as 12 this year so if they don't, and they split up into k/m, k members will have more of a chance to be ~the new hot trend~ as opposed to m members since they won't be actively promoting in korea.
aside from that, the first one who came to mind as a possibly contender is kyungsoo! because of the movie he's going to be in, i imagine people will probably search his name after the movie, whether it be for a good reason or bad.

like everyone else has said, it's really hard not to be biased because there are some sub-units i would /love/ to happen just because of my own headcanons/biases. plus, the "perfect" sub-unit and who goes into it depends on what the aim/purpose of the sub-unit is.
i could regurgitate what others have said in their responses to this question bc my answers would basically be the same since what others have answered would be like the "perfect" sub-unit that is good at all things a normal idol group should be or at least, well rounded and there are other members to compensate for skills that another member may lack in. baekhyun would definitely be in any sub-unit because he's arguably one of the more ~well rounded~ members in exo and i think he could be pretty versatile but as for the rest of the four members who would be included, it depends on a lot of variables that we don't know. ;;;

I spent this entire time trying to figure out how to answer this because I've read so many fics and loved just as much that it's hard for me to narrow down and pick my favourites. OTL I've kind of been meaning to go through my lj mems and organize them and stuff for reasons like this but unfortunately, I only have my lj mems (http://www.livejournal.com/tools/memories.bml?user=dearmykeysx&keyword=fics&filter=all) which is long and super unorganized ;;;;
IF YOU LIKE SUHO THOUGH, I RECOMMEND CURLEDUPKITTEN'S FICS BECAUSE ALL OF THEM ARE SUHO PAIRINGS & SHE'S ALWAYS SO SPOT ON WITH SUHO'S CHARACTERIZATION. Touchline and After A While (You Learn) are the ones that stick out in my mind the most (are also the only ones I've finished reading because her fics are reaaaaaally long)~
also if you like da suchen, A Succession of Kings (everyone suggests this one lol) and uh, a good ot12 I liked a lot but stopped reading because it wasn't being updated for a while (but now it is back to be updated, I believe!) was Zodiac. that one is like fantasy/mama au but uh iirc, there are/will be some character deaths in that one so read at your own risk!!
there are also the ~fandom favourites~ that I'm not are still up (because last I checked, some of the authors privated them because people were plagarizing or translating without permission and stuff) but a quick google search or a little snopping will probably give you some names! I remember reading Absolute Chanyeol and shedding tears (but I cry easily so lol) and I never got around to finishing Anterograde Tomorrow? omg and then there was that one fic on AFF with the numbers and it was baekyeol that got fairly ~popular~ so yeah...
WAIT SHIT THERE WAS THIS ONE KAISOO FIC I REALLY LIKED BUT NOW I FORGOT THE NAME NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO it was another ~fandom favourite~ though so hahahaha, yeah OTL
oh and if you decide to go through my lj mems, I think a majority of the fics in there are fluff/romance/humor/crack and a handful of dark/angsty/depressing as fuck stuff because I tend to read more lighthearted fics! How did you celebrate New Year's Eve?
with twitter, a cup of boiled water noodles, and my parents napping away in the same room as me (then only waking up for .5 seconds as the ball in ny times square dropped before going back to sleep). exciting, I know.
Ever since I've learned that Suzy didn't want to be an actress (and cried when offered a role), I hesitate to finish Dream High and watch her other dramas. What should I do? ;v;
REALLY? I DIDN'T EVEN KNOW THAT? OMG that's kind of sad and probably meant she got pushed into do it because she's the face of Miss A & since it's one way to give Suzy/the group more ~exposure~ altho it sucks that she ended up acting even if she didn't want to :( but I've read a few articles in passing where Suzy's said she wanted to try more roles and stuff so maybe she's grown to like acting more now? ;;;
anyways, the only drama of Suzy's I had a chance to watch was Dream High because that's what made me look up Suzy in the first place and what made me start stanning her lol and plus, the first DH was like 100000000x better than the second one so, if you want to watch any of them IT SHOULD BE THE FIRST ONE.
tbh, I can't really /force/ you to watch DH1 (but you should lol) because Suzy's acting is kinda... flat (altho I think that's partly from who her character was supposed to be like but it was also her first role as an actress and if she actually didn't want to act well I can't blame her) but IDK I STILL ENJOYED IT A LOT! and like I said, watching Suzy in it is what got me looking her up (and tbh, was the reason why I started listening to KPOP) so I guess, DH1 means a lot to me in some way lmao.
also I heard her acting is pretty??? alright??? now???? but like I said, I haven't watched BIG or her movie Architecture 101. that one drama she was in with Lee Seunggi that I forgot the name or or anything else she may have been in so I can't tell you if those were good/worth watching or not :( but I personally liked Dream High!

firstly layhan because somewhat angels when apart but together they are devils but also really funny and cute and you can tell they're really comfortable with each other and just LAYHAN ARE ONE OF MY FAVOURITE BROTPS IN EXO. look at any fancam or pic of them and i'm sure you'll see why <333
secondly chansoo because idk i have this feeling that those two are really close and get along well and seem to understand each other fairly well and its like they arent super up front about being close but its those little hints/stories they say (ie. the small mention chanyeol (or was it kyungsoo idk) said that he and kyung always took the same subway or smth home together) AND THEYRE ALSO JUST HELLA CUTE. kyung calls chan a giraffe ok like just. C H A N S O O.

no but rly hahhahaha i keep telling everyone i know (who likes exo) that i loooooove baekchen. they seem to play off each other really well and have this dynamic where they can have fun w/each other but teasing and joking but i think they also ~*~understand~*~ each other both bc they have similar positions in their sub groups and also became trainees around the same time/didn't train as long compared to the rest of the members so they probably just /get/ each other. they're obviously pretty comfy with each other and i don't think it's just fanservice for them (altho they may play up their relationship more when cameras and ans are around) AND HAVE YOU SEEN THEM BE SUPER AFFECTIONATE WITH EACH OTHER AND TOUCHING EACH OTHER ALL OVER THE PLACE???? i swear at park sohyun's love game radio show or w/e it's called, at one point chen just had his leg resting on baekhyun's lap behind the table for the like THE longest time and i know a lot of exo members do this BUT STILL. who in exo do you think is the complete package when it comes to being an idol? and who do you think could become a triple threat? why?

so my default answer is suho (as always, it's just second nature) but even i will admit that his vocal skills are not ~*~on the same level~*~ as the main vocals (bc well, he's not a main vocal) and the same goes for his dancing and his variety skills are mostly just him being 100000% embarrassing as fuck but i think it works for him??? plus his looks are fuckin A+ GOD CREATED MATERIAL. i think with more practice tho, suho /could/ become a ~*~triple threat~*~ if not then he can just be an actor bc i think he will do well at that (didn't he get accepted into an arts school for acting too???)
BUT IN REALITY chen and baek are probably the """"complete package"""" when it comes to being an idol, baek sliding ahead of chen marginally bc his dance skills are arguably just a bit better than chen's lol. but they both have the vocals (obviously), they can do the choreo fairly well, their variety sense and skills are like, great, bc how many times have they had us in tears??? and together they're every better because they just bounce of each other really well and they keep the atmosphere alive even if they're making jabs at other members lol. they do well on the radio too and can obviously carry themselves on their own and even with mid promotions, where baek kinda was the first to give their thank you speeches (much like suho always did when exo won bc he was the ""ot12 leader""), it was kind of like showing that they /can/ do things on their own...

and i also want to note that all of exo probably have like half of the qualities needed to be a "complete package"??? but most of them are lacking in some areas where others will shine and then there are ppl like baekchen who despite training the least were kinda just BORN with that ~*~star quality~*~ so they were able to adapt to being put in a group and debuting and stuff easssilllyyyyy.

well you see, i live in this world where i like to believe that everyone in exo gets along and exo is one big happy family AND THEY ALL LOVE EACH OTHER OKAY?????
no but really they do all probably get along and i don't doubt that there probably /are/ "cliques" in exo but maybe not in the sense where they purpose outcast someone else... more like, in a group of people that you're all friends/acquaintances with, there are always going to be a few people that you're just more close to/with than others so of course you'll naturally gravitate towards them and spend more time with them regardless. with a group of 12 guys with all varying personalities, of course not all of them will get along at the same time and some will be closer to others so "cliques" could form but it'd really just be the group of people they're closer friends with.
i think beagle line may not be as close as they appear to be but i think they're definitely working on that and they do have a lot of fun with each other because of their similar personalities. it's clear baekchen are pretty comfortable with each other and they've repeatedly said they're pretty good friends (but also each other's rivals, as well) bc they joined sm at the same time and were in the same boat by being the last members to join exo while also having the least amount of experience + both of them being the main vocalists of their respective sub groups. with chanyeol, i always had this feeling that like... i think he's closer to d.o or kai more than he is with baekhyun or chen because he's been a trainee longer with the first two as compared to the last two and i could see him as a third wheel to baekchen lol. there's also the matter of baekyeol and even though they are my otp, i do believe that they were probably a pr pairing put together by sm to lure in fan girls because they miraculously hit it off in a sense where they feed off each other well. as a result of being apart of a """popular""" pairing, they probably did naturally grow closer because of that altho, again, baek might not be as close to chan as he is to chen (or even vice versa idk anything about what exo are like offscreen). BUT UM OK THAT WAS SO LONG. TL;DR VERSION: BEGAL LINE ARE PROBABLY CLOSE & IF THEY AREN'T, THEN THEY PROBABLY WILL BE LOL.
